About the author

J.H. Moncrieff writes supernatural thrillers for readers who love Gillian Flynn, Darcy Coates, and Stephen King. Her paranormal mystery, City of Ghosts, won the Kindle Book Review Award for best Horror/Suspense. She lives in a quiet Mexican fishing village, where she perfects her Muay Thai roundhouse, paddleboards with wild dolphins, and drinks more iced tea than anyone you know.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseGhosts of past, present and future visit Jackson. The future ghost, The Oracle, gives away the author’s fear of the world ending. That was my take away.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this in one sitting. I went through it so quickly I forgot I even read it, but I did not forget what I read. I really enjoyed this book. Even though Jackson was the star of this installment, Kate was always there and they feel stronger as a couple. We also get to learn more about a beloved supporting character. The only reason I didn't give it a higher rating was for two major reasons.
1) I want to say I hate (but hate is a strong word), but I really don't like cliffhangers. This book started where one cliffhanger ends and almost feels like it too ends with a cliffhanger. I'm not really sure how to describe the ending of this installment. Some may not consider it a cliffhanger, but for me it's close.
2) I have so many questions, so so many questions. I need the next book to be out like now, but that's not entirely my issue. There were so many ideas, plot points, and or themes introduced in this installment, which I hope will be explored later on (maybe there will even be a spin-off (hint hint, wink wink)), but I felt like that was the whole purpose of this book- to serve as a preview of possible stories, plots, characters, and settings to come. It felt like a long preview. A long preview I thoroughly enjoyed.
Can't wait for more.
Highly recommended to fans of horror, complex paranormal situations, diverse characters, and smart dark fiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2020Format: KindleCAROL OF GHOSTS is a standalone novella in the GhostWriters universe, by author J.H. Moncrieff. Kate--a Medium--and her boyfriend Jackson, are looking forward to spending a nice holiday without interruptions form people or spirits seeking their help. At least, Jackson is, as Kate has never known a "conventional life".
"Jacks, I talk to dead people. And they talk back."
Taking a twist on the concept of ghostly visitors on Christmas Eve, Moncrieff has created something entirely new with her paranormal investigators. They still have the same comedic banter and mannerisms that I fell in love with, but now things are becoming a bit more . . . defined . . . for Jackson.
". . . Sometimes, it's a pain . . . But I wouldn't trade this life for anything . . ."
Joined by Kate's best friend, Laura, Jackson is about to find out more regarding his own role, and that the things he once thought of in terms of black and white, are actually shades of gray.
". . . Do you understand how a good person can do unforgivable things? . . ."
I really enjoyed this excerpt of Kate and Jackson's lives, as it takes a more personal approach to them, as opposed to action on their parts. We get to see the mindset of Jacks in more detail, and watch it expand as he begins to understand more of Kate and Laura's life experiences.
". . . Patience. Ugh. The one thing I didn't have . . . "
Overall, I loved this holiday foray into the personal lives of Kate, Jacks, and Laura. As always, references to real events and beliefs were meticulously researched and as accurate as they could possibly be. I enjoyed seeing Jackson's view of the world expand from what he learned in his rigid upbringing, to the reality of how many other beliefs are practiced in the world.
I am very interested to see how future novels build off the dynamic ending this one had!
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2020Format: KindleAn excellent December read! Moncrieff mixes elements of Christianity, Paganism, and time travel in this ghostly tale set in December 2020. Jackson is visited by spirits that have haunted him in the past and wreaked havoc on his life and those he loves. They come back to make him see what has happened, what is currently happening, and what could happen in the future if he, and the Earthly population, don't change their evil ways. I highlighted this phrase: "Do you understand how a good person can do unforgivable things?"
And: "Humans have lost their humanity. You are living in a world without compassion, without empathy, without hope...if this isn't corrected, the future you have seen is the one that will come to pass."
Like Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, our main character Jackson (and all of us) are shown what we've done to contribute to the suffering, how it is affecting the planet and each other now, and what the future will look like if we don't change make changes now.
I like how Moncrieff brings in elements/storyline/ghosts of past books in her Ghost Writer series to tell this story. It's a short novella, just right for December, and reflects our current times.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2020Format: KindleCarol of Ghosts is the sixth in J.H. Moncrieff's GhostWriters series and provides a very different slant on the preceding stories. This time around, it is Christmas, and Kate and Jackson are looking forward to a quiet and cosy time. But, of course, with these two that is never going to happen. This time it is Jackson who is the focus, as he begins to learn far more about the role that has been thrust upon him - that of Protector - through a series of ghostly encounters from the past, present and future.
Intriguing, impeccably researched and highly enjoyable, this novella, as with its predecessors, can be read as a standalone although I personally feel that this one is even better when read in conjunction with Mask of Ghosts - number five in the series. The only problem is, when you finish one of these superb gems, you want to dive into the next. Got to be patient though, and look forward to their next adventure in the ghostly world. The set up is at the end of Carol of Ghosts and I know it has to be... No, sorry, not telling you! Read and enjoy the story. Perfect for Christmas Eve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant read!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseLike all of the books in the GhostWriter series, Carol of Ghosts is a stand alone story in it's own right, but having said that, I think it helps if you've read the previous books in the series as you already have an insight into the personalities, history, and previous exploits of the two main characters Kate and Jackson.
J.H has this extraordinary ability to draw you into a story within a few sentences, and this is no exception. As a novella it is obvious that there is more of this particular story to come and I for one can't wait for the the next instalment!
For fans of the supernatural and strange tales this book is a must. There are many excellent authors of this genre around at the moment, but for me J.H is the master!
All of that said, this is just a great story very well written. I'm not going to give away any of the plot, just read it for yourselves. Get it for you collection now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kate, Jacks and Laura ride again but...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNòoooooooooooooooooo! I was so NOT ready for it to end when it did! I missed the "novella" part of the description in my excitement to pre-order and then download this, the next installment in the Ghost Writers series.
True to form, J. H. maintains the integrity of her characters, while allowing them to grow in an organic, realistic way that brings them to life for readers in a way that many authors aspire to accomplish. Our trio is once again united in all things otherworldly. We learn more about Laura, Jacks has some Dickensian "dteams" (visions) that involve returning visitors from their past and Kate sets aside her financial concerns to help guide Jacks through the winding path he needs to follow.
This novella is well worth the read and will leave you with only one burning question: When is the next novel going to come out??
(Too soon to ask? Nah. It just shows how enthusiastic I am and how much I am looking forward to the next adventures of the Ghost Writers crew!)
Thank you for this, J. H.! It was, as always, spellbinding, immersive, a pleasant escape from the realities of today (in spite of several real-word current event allusions) and a fabulous way to spend a cool, winter evening at home. You are so gifted, and I am blessed to know you.
