Carteret: Confirmed Bachelors Book 3 Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 1,975 ratings

Dignified, reserved, and every inch the gentleman, Laurence Westerby, the fifth Viscount Carteret, finds his ordered and predictable world turned on its head when a mysterious lady steps into his private parlour. He thinks her spirited, reckless, and undoubtedly in need of his protection.

Confident, frank, and used to managing her own affairs, Miss Cassandra Fenton does not like the role of damsel in distress. Laurence seems determined to help her out of her immediate difficulties, however. His chivalry reminds her of all the reasons she is so unsuited to marriage.

An unlikely friendship is forged, but will it survive the pressures of potential abductors, smugglers and a suspected murderer?

I live by the sea in Plymouth, England, with my partner Dave. I like reading, sailing, and exploring in our camper van. I love getting up early to watch the sunrise in summer, and long quiet evenings by the wood burner in our cabin on the cliffs in Cornwall in winter.

I write traditional Regency romance novels that respect the mores of the era. I like to think my characters, though flawed, are likeable, strong, and true to the period.

Love the plot of this story. An unexpected meeting has forever changes the life of an unexpected couple. The way they come to know more of the other is truly the best way a romance happens.

This is a book you can sink your teeth into but be warned, it will keep you up til all hours.

The writing is lovely. The characters likeable and the twist was handled very well, I thought.

It's not necessary to read the first two books but you'll want to, trust me.

    Highly recommended

This book is perfect for lounging on the beach or if you're home sick in bed. It is light-hearted brain candy that is highly predictable and has several improbable coincidences that make me feel like the author was having fun with the genre of regency romances.
I gave it a 3 because of the comparitve quality of my 5s, but as a book that helped me through bronchitis, it's a 5 all the way!

I knew nothing of this author when I decided to purchase her book, but am now delighted to recommend her for believably human characters with layered depths and engaging plot twists. I’ll be looking for more of her work!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer entertainment.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 11, 2022
I have ready Jenny Hambly's books before, and I like them for being clean, sweet romances, but also Georgette Heyer-ish. The language is like Jane Austen and suits the characters well.

But this particular book really held a pleasant surprise for me because most of it takes place in West Norfolk. Having lived in the Hunstanton area myself for 36 years, I am very well acquainted with every bit of the landscape the author describes, every village and even the inns in some cases (though I raised an eyebrow at someone being dropped off at the Globe and the carriage then carrying on to the Duke's Head which is just across the Tuesday Market Place in King's Lynn). The whole area was involved in smuggling in the past, and some houses almost next door to the Customs House in Lynn have cellars with doors opening directly onto the River Great Ouse. But I digress.

I enjoyed the characters. The stiff and formal Laurence Lord Carteret of the title, and the forthright and headstrong Cassandra were drawn beautifully, and each acted in character. At times the interaction between them made me chuckle, but I loved the 19th century speech and the manners with which the author seems to be quite at home, and for which American authors don't have an ear. And then, as everyone gets to know each other, and they relax a little, we see the emotions behind the formal facade.

The story was good too. I like a romance that has more to it than two lovers overcoming their difficulties. This one had a mystery, or actually more than one mystery. If I had to be picky, I would have liked the Francis story to have been brought out gradually throughout the book and developed more, and felt that there was an opportunity of more drama there that was missed.

I particularly enjoyed this book. If you are looking for entertainment, then I would heartily recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant but not really memorable
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 9, 2022
There are some books which stay with you long after you've finished reading them. You remember the story, the characters, you relive the key moments in your head, sometimes you are even drawn to reading them again. This however is not such a book.
It did keep my interest as I was reading it; it was well written and had a good period feel, but it certainly won't stay among the books I fondly remember.
I have read much more exciting stories about smuggling during this period from Stella Riley or Jayne Davies for example.
Laurence and Cassandra are pleasant enough, but somehow the whole book feels a bit lightweight. In fact, this is a feeling I've had before when reading other books by this author (Marianne, Miss Hayes, Georgianna). So, if you are looking for easy reading, for something to keep you mildly entertained, try this book by all means. In fact, I have ordered the next one in this series in the hope that it will change my opinion of this author. I like her style, but perhaps she should concentrate more on a strong storyline.

Escape from a dangerous relative, an ex- Bow street runner on the trail,a lost treasure, smugglers and strong personalities all combine to make a fun, gripping and satisfying love story with a second one for good measure. Another great read from Jenny Hambly.
