Caught Off Guard: A M/M Military Romance Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 45 ratings

He’d risk his life to find his brother. But he never expected to risk his heart.

Three months since his brother went MIA, and Lane Matthews is tired of waiting for answers from overseas. Calling in a favour from his CO, he gets a posting to Jeddah—his first overseas deployment and where his brother was stationed—and the opportunity to try to find him.

Life in a foreign land isn’t quite as he imagined, and neither are his duties. And while his first encounter with his housemate, Tristan, may be memorable, it’s for all the wrong reasons.

Tristan catches him off guard, but falling for the hot—straight?—soldier is definitely not in his future. Tensions rise as Lane gets closer to discovering the truth behind his brother’s disappearance, but even the best-laid plans can get swept off course and lost like a grain of sand in the desert.

This MM military romance from Beth Laycock features an age gap, a bratty MC, forced proximity, hurt/comfort, and of course a HEA.

Beth Laycock’s books are influenced by her time living overseas as well as the gritty, urban landscape of the north of England where she grew up. She has been reading romance since she was old enough to tell herself that line every book lover does—just one more chapter.

As a teenager, she attempted to write her first novel, and many more since then are still gathering dust on her bookshelf. It wasn’t until she discovered the M/M genre that her muse showed up and refused to quit telling her stories about beautiful men finding love together. She hasn’t stopped scribbling them down since. Beth’s muse usually shows up when she is in the shower, is allergic to cleaning, rarely lets her watch TV, and insists she drinks copious amounts of coffee so she can turn caffeine into words.

Beth’s books range from sweet to sexy, long to short, contemporary to paranormal, but a HEA is always guaranteed.

Standalone. Hurt/comfort. Age gap. Close proximity. Quick read. Single POV. Heading to Saudi Arabia in hopes of finding his missing brother, British soldier Lane is unprepared for life as a soldier. While slowly beginning the search for information about his brother, Lane finds he is attracted to Tristan, the American soldier with whom he shares a house. It is a quick jump into steamy interactions, with Tristan comforting and supporting Lane during his attempts in gathering information. There is serious subject matter and Lane experiences traumatic feelings of despair and grief as the fate of his brother is unknown for most of the story, and there is not a lot of emotional background shared between Lane and Tristan, but it was an entertaining read and a wonderful HEA epilogue.

This story moves quickly and packs an emotional punch. The premise is fraught— a search for Lane’s missing brother in the middle of deployment— and the physical chemistry between Lane and Tristan is definitely strong. Their progression from pure lust to something emotional as well as physical happens quickly, but it fits the premise and style of the story. There’s an interesting mixture of bitter and sweet in the ending, which also felt like a good fit for the kind of story this is.

Lane transitioned from the reserves to active duty in the hope of finding information on his MIA brother. The story captures good reactions of the first moments in country during a first deployment. His single minded dedication in his pursuit of the truth could be admirable. Tristan, his room mate provides solid support and friendship helping Lane get used to his new environment. Lane's behavior as a westerner in a foreign country during wartime is a bit unconventional. I would have liked more depth learning about Tristan the man and Ben, the other roommate. Smooth storyline flow. Does Lane find his brother? Does Lane return to and architect career or does he stay in the military? Does Lane get help for his PTSD? Nice story.

I really enjoyed this book. The chemistry between Lane and Tristan is strong from the beginning, even though it's just physical to begin with before it moves to more. Really enjoyed the characters and the storyline.

Lane is on a mission to find his brother and that search drives the story here. He meets Tristan when he's posted overseas to continue his search and Tristan turns out to be the support Lane needs at critical times. Their relationship progresses quickly but believably and there is a depth of emotion to it, not just the physical attraction. Definitely some surprises as the plot develops and that makes for a great read.

This was pretty good, caught interest and had a fascinating idea. The desperation that Lane feels to find out what happened to his brother makes sense, even driving him to do something he never really imagined. Then finding solace in his roommate, Tristan, works out to. The two have chemistry and the awkward figuring out is a bit funny. It just felt a little like it was skipping over things. Lane had been in the reserves, and the way he is out there is almost feels like he has no training. Then it was pretty clear he didn't truly want to do this but had only gone into full service to find his brother. This never really seems to get addressed though they do at least seem to not be in an active zone. It felt that the investigation into his brother and the relationship and the fear over the job were sort of all separate stories that didn't really work together, so while it was interesting it was a little bit flat. An easy quick read though.
