For years, Alan Campbell believed his wife and close friends loved to hear him sing an old Johnny Mathis song, Chances Are.

On a sweltering evening, after a backyard barbecue with plenty of good wine, he finds out his wife Trish has suffered in silent humiliation whenever he performs.

At home, their fight turns ugly.

The splintering of marriages and friendships continues when his life-long friend Sam accuses Alan of using the song to seduce his wife, Debra.

After witnessing a brawl between Alan and Sam, Trish confronts Debra. A few weeks later, the group buries their rage and goes out for a night on the town.

Jealousy and fear erupt in an act of violence with devastating results.

Also included are sample chapters fromThe Woman In the Mirror, book one of the Alexandra Mallory series, featuring a sociopath you can not help but love. Alex has been described as "one of the most unique characters in fiction".

"Cathryn's writing style amazed me. She was able to get inside the heads of her characters to an incredible degree and expose their vulnerabilities, their insecurities, their fears, and even mental illness without flinching."

Her fiction has appeared in Alfred Hitchcock and Ellery Queen Mystery Magazines, The Shroud Quarterly Journal, and The Best of Every Day Fiction. Her short story "I Was Young Once" received an honorable mention in the 2007 Zoetrope All-story Short Fiction contest.

When she's not writing, Cathryn reads fiction, eavesdrops, and plays very high handicap golf. She lives on the Central California coast with her husband and two cats.

Cathryn is the author of over thirty psychological suspense novels, including the addictive ALEXANDRA MALLORY series featuring a sociopath you can’t help but love.

The things that cause torment in real life—obsession and revenge, guilt and envy and longing—are endlessly fascinating in fiction and she never grows tired of writing stories about characters struggling to overcome the worst.

Cathryn also writes ghost stories because who knows what lies beyond our senses—The Haunted Ship Trilogy and the Madison Keith series of novellas.

When she’s not writing, she’s usually reading psychological thrillers, watching crime documentaries, walking on the beach, or playing golf, going way out of her way to avoid hitting her ball in the sand or the water. She lives on the Central California Coast with her husband and her cat, Cleopatra.

You can get in touch with her by email, find her social media links, or sign up for her monthly newsletter at her website, cathryngrant. As a thank you for signing up, you’ll receive a free short story about Alexandra Mallory.

Such a terrific writer. Her Alexandra Mallory books got me absolutely addicted. Chances Are is definitely a book you can't put down once you start.

The plot is silly, stupid, unrealistic and not enjoyable. Don't waste your time. The ending probably was intended to be a shocker but it proved how silly this book was.

I recently discovered this author via her Alexandra Mallory series. The few books I've read from that series are good, but I'm finding her older novels, novellas, and short stories are beyond great!

The name of her genre "suburban noir" pretty much describes her books. Her stories are about seemingly "normal" average people (though for some reason the main people are very attractive) behaving in dark, but true to human nature, ways.

I read on her author's page that she does not write "who done its", she writes "why done its". I'm this novella, as in other work I've read by Grant, the "why" is laid out as the story unfolds.

This story focused on people acting out of character once they realize that midlife and the changes that came with it have snuck up on them. This one has me realizing a story doesn't have to include murder to be dark.

What I'm finding so intriguing about Cathryn Grant's writing is, first of all, the handle she has on human nature! She writes so effortlessly about many different pockets of subcultures in suburban settings. Her pacing and timing are perfect.

I find it difficult to write reviews on her books because it's impossible to say what is outstanding without creating spoilers.

If you are already a fan, you know what I mean. If you haven't read any of her stuff, give it a try. I highly recommend this novella, for sure.
