Chasing Chance: Gilcrest University Guys Book One Kindle Edition
If I were in a support group for hopelessly pathetic gays, I’d have to introduce myself by saying, “Hi, I’m Andy Michaelson and I can’t stop myself from thinking about Chance Wyrick.”
From the time we met, when we were only six years old, and for the next twelve years, he was my best friend. I fell in love with him along the way. I couldn’t say exactly when it happened, only that it happened.
Words of advice:
Never fall in love with your best friend, especially if he’s one of the most popular kids at school, the best high school quarterback in the state, or if he happens to be your next-door neighbor.
But most of all…
Never, I repeat never, fall in love with your best friend if he’s straight. Nothing good can come of it. Trust me.
Our friendship was over before we finished our last year of high school. My best friend became my ex-best friend. I hoped to forget about him when I went off to college. But Chance followed me there. So did all the memories.
I tried to forget him. I did. But he was more beautiful than ever. He was the starting quarterback for Gilcrest University. He was larger than life. He was impossible to ignore. We hadn’t spoken in years, but the memories still hit me out of nowhere, and they still hurt.
By the time I started my third year at Gilcrest, I was beginning to think I’d never be over him.
As it turns out, I was right…
Chasing Chance is the first book in the Gilcrest University Guys series. It’s a full-length, “friends to lovers” romance novel. It has “coming out” and “first-time gay” themes, is stocked full of STEAM, heartache, and laughter, and it has a guaranteed happy ending. The series will follow the love stories of four college friends. Chasing Chance is the first of two books that will tell Andy and Chance’s love story. Look for book two, Catching Chance, to come out next month!

About the author

Mary Esther Parker, a former attorney, is an up and coming new author, who lives in Tennessee, with her teenage daughter and a grumpy white-haired cat. She loves to read just about anything. When she is not reading, she is writing, painting, making home improvements, or drinking wine with her best friends. She has B.A. in Political Science and a J.D. from the University of Tennessee. She likes writing sweet coming of age stories that combine a lot of laughs, sometimes a few tears, ooey-gooey romance at its best, and whole lot of steamy sex and believes when you put those things all together in the right way, you get the perfect feel-good read, guaranteed to leave you smiling in the end. She believes love is love, romance is romance, and gender is irrelevant.

I loved the glimpses from the past where we get to see Chance and Andys friendship and how they fell apart. And I love that we get both Chance and Andys side of the story.
Andy is out and has been out since high school and that's whrn he and Chance had a falling out. And even though he's been trying, Chance is still the only one he's ever loved.
Chance is so full of regret of how he treated Andy and of not telling him how he felt. But with a dad that has made it clear that same sex relationships are not okay and being a football player he can't see how he could ever come out.
But when they are finally forced together by an accident neither one of them can deny that they have missed each other.
I loved Andy and Chance together and I love a good amount of angst if I get a happy ending.
And I'm really happy that Andys friend Cam will get his own book since I really liked him.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2021It's my first book by this author and I did enjoy it quite a bit!
I loved both Chance and Andy, I loved their friendship and dynamics together. I liked how this author enfolded their story. We go back and forth between the present and the past, and that worked quite well for me.
We get to know them when Chance moves in next to Andy's when they are six years old. A new friendship is quickly made. They remain best friends until the summer before their last year in highschool.
That's when something happens, and that 'something' is bad enough, their friendship doesn't survive.
I really wanted to find out what it was Chance did to Andy, what caused their friendship to blow up and for them not speak to each other for three years.
And after I read what happened, yeah, I got it. Chance did treat Andy bad, but I also got what drove him to do so.
Fear. And fear is the worst possible advisor.
Chance has been regretting his act every day since then. He misses Andy, misses their friendship, but again, fear keeps him from seeking out his former best friend and explain. Because then he has to admit he's gay and he is just so not ready for that.
There's a sequel to this book, but this book doesn't end with a cliffhanger. It's a HFN, and you can leave it there. I do intend to read the second book, though. I'd like to see how Andy and Chance reach their HEA. Plus, they are such likable characters, I'd like to spend some more time with them too.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2024I loved this book. It's now one of my favorite m\m romance books. Two boys meet at six years old and are best friends until their last year of high school and stop speaking to each other until they cross paths again their junior year of college and start a romantic relationship. It's a well written book and a great read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2021Great beginning to the series. Both MCs are likable and mildly flawed. Sidekick roomies provide the correct amount of sass. Good parent/bad parent. The Feels are real, my friend. 3.75 for camping.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2022This is a great childhood best friends, second chance sports romance! I love how you get so many tropes in this book. The characters chemistry is amazing. It’s sweet, steamy, and all the good feels. This is book 1 of a duet and it does a great job at giving you the whole backstory with childhood flash backs and meaningful moments! The second chance meeting is so good as well!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2020Best friends become lovers/boyfriends. Quarterback falls for nerd. Closeted jock with homophobic parents (in this case, the dad is a pastor). Extra nosey/interfering best friend. Nothing especially different or extraordinary here, not even the characters. But it's a cute way to pass the time when you don't want to read anything too heavy, which is why I cracked it open. Don't intend to read Book 2, even though this one is a cliffhanger, and I don't want to read Book 3 because even though it's about Cam, it's also a cliffhanger.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2021I love this book, well series seeing that I have read it twice so far. You will quickly identify with the characters whether you are male, female, transgender, genderfluid, gay, straight, bi, pan, demi, or whatever you identify with sexually. Heck even if you don't know yet you will be able to connect with the characters. That was the first thing I loved about this book. The second was the story line, it was realistic and relatable while still portraying the sweetness only found in fairy tales. This book will make you swoon and root them on over and over. Especially Andy he's the biggest marshmallow. Happy reading☺.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 29, 2019This is a nice sweet reconnection story, not overdone and a great quick read. I liked the flashback sections in this story; they worked here where they don't in some stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 swoony stars
Wonderful second chance-best friends to lovers-sports-romance, I need to read to the next one asap. My heart is soooo rooting for Andy and Chance <3
Cam is a great friend, I loved his way of approaching Chance and giving him a real chance, not telling him to leave Andy alone. And I loved Chance for taking this chance and really considering Andy‘s feelings.
Andy‘s parents are the best, great reaction after his church thing.
And awww the flashbacks, little Andy and Chance are adorable!
„Just because you found me doesn‘t mean you can catch me,“ he yelled as he took off running towards home base. I sprinted as hard as I could in his direction, but it was no use. Chance was faster. Our laughter echoed through the backyard as I chased him. I was gaining on him a bit, but I knew I wouldn‘t catch him. I didn‘t care. Chasing Chance was one of the best parts of the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable guys, interesting characters, I want more!!
This is the second gay romance I'm lucky enough to both ARC and BETA read for M.E. Parker and boy, can she knock them out of the park. Both Chance and Andy are adorable, amazing, swoon worthy and easy to get invested in. They seem to compliment each other on every level. Where Andy is happily out of the closet, Chance is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality. It doesn't help that his deeply religious dad, is the father at the local church. So Chance was raised to thinking being gay is wrong. This have held him back for so many years. Though he still doesn't feel like he can be himself all the time, one thing is certain: he never feels more like himself than when he's with Andy.
What I really liked about this book was the natural progression of things, and the friends-to strangers-to lovers path we follow Andy and Chance on. Though, their journey is filled with ups and downs, there's no forced or unnecessary conflict. No stupid misunderstandings that threaten the happiness of the MC's. That in itself could make this romance boring, however the secondary characters are over simply amazing. They're quirky, interesting, funny, lovable and so unique. On top of that M.E. Parker clearly shows her talent for writing, with the character growth - and I don't just mean regarding sexuality. The biggest lesson to be learned in this book is the difference between keeping a secret, and keeping someone a secret. The constant battle of keeping those two apart keeps Chance on his toes.
Even though, this is only the first book in Andy and Chance's story the book doesn't end on a cliffhanger. And the next book will be out already next month, which I'm so excited for!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read~
An emotional friend to lovers book. Chance & Andy's story begins when they are six years old. They strike up an incredible friendship that lasts for years. I loved their time in flashbacks, especially where the world was just the 2 of them up in their treehouse. Their friendship is put to the test years later when Andy comes out to Chance, unfortunately, Chance doesn't handle it well which leaves Andy devastated. The two stop seeing each other & go their separate ways until fate intervenes. By this time Chance is already at a stage where he is questioning his life & what is missing in it & that is Andy. I won't go into any more of the story I don't want to spoil it for others.
You won't be disappointed. It's a heartfelt sexy read.
I really enjoyed Chance & Andy's journey so far, at the moment they are in an HFN situation. I can't wait to read more about Chance & Andy & their HEA. The secondary cast is fabulous, looking forward to Cam, Ben, Jordy's stories in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet
Honestly, I wasn't sure whether or not to read this, mainly because of the ages of the leads as I prefer them to be older, but with so many good reviews (and to be fair, the price), I thought I would give it a go.
I found it to be a short, sweet and believable read. The mix of past and present was done really well and I enjoyed the world building and the feeling of getting to know Andy and Chance, their closeness and distance towards each other and their reuniting. I liked Andy's friends, especially Cam.
I will be looking out for the follow up to this one as I'm interested to see what happens next. I suspect there will be some hurt feelings along the way. Not sure if I will continue with the rest of the series yet because as I said I prefer my characters to be older.
A good read though.
