Chasing Serenity: A River Rain Novel Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 3,435 ratings

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Ashley brings a new novel in her River Rain series… From a very young age, Chloe Pierce was trained to look after the ones she loved. And she was trained by the best. But when the man who looked after her was no longer there, Chloe is cast adrift—just as the very foundation of her life crumbled to pieces. Then she runs into tall, lanky, unpretentious Judge Oakley, her exact opposite. She shops. He hikes. She drinks pink ladies. He drinks beer. She’s a city girl. He’s a mountain guy. Obviously, this means they have a blowout fight upon meeting. Their second encounter doesn’t go a lot better. Judge is loving the challenge. Chloe is everything he doesn’t want in a woman, but he can’t stop finding ways to spend time with her. He knows she’s dealing with loss and change. He just doesn’t know how deep that goes. Or how ingrained it is for Chloe to care for those who have a place in her heart, how hard it will be to trust anyone to look after her… And how much harder it is when it’s his turn.

This story had me hooked! Loved the emotion, passion, and drama!

This story had me hooked! Loved the emotion, passion, and drama!
Chasing Serenity was a wonderful read filled with so much passion, emotion, and love. I adored Chloe and Judge. I loved the journey they were on, the feelings they fought, and how they grew over the course of the story. I loved their family and all the different bonds, and the fantastic build as everything played out. This was filled with so many amazing moments and I couldn't read it fast enough.Judge was everything! I loved learning his history and all he'd endured growing up. It was heartbreaking and I felt for him but I loved who he became despite it all. I loved Chloe. She is so much more than she shows the world and I loved seeing the women behind the mask. I loved them together. I thought their chemistry was off the charts and I enjoyed the animosity between them when they first meet. Their back and forth was like foreplay. I like how they fought their feelings but loved it when they opened up and became vulnerable. I thought the growth they experienced over the course of the story was phenomenal. There was a great cast of characters and I loved the playfulness, drama, and heartfelt scenes they created. I loved getting more of Corey Szabo and seeing flashbacks of his and Chloe's relationship. This man is complicated and I loved seeing a softer side of him through Chloe's eyes and understanding their bond. There was a lot building up in Chloe when it came to Corey and her family and when everything pours out of her, it’s gut-wrenching. I liked the different dynamics and relationships taking place, and how the different families came together. There were so many important moments happening, sibling bonds growing deeper, and some tension with others. I loved learning about the complicated relationship Judge has with his father and how it evolved. I really liked getting more Rix and what has been set up for the next book. I also loved the interactions with Rhys and the tie-in to The ‘Burg series. I find him completely fascinating! This story has drama and intensity, a lot of emotion, and an immense amount of healing and love. It made me smile and get teary-eyed. I thought this was an excellent addition to the River Rain series that has me excited for more stories.

So first, I have read and loved many Kristen Ashley books. I'm not one to to blow smoke and say I love each and every story and sentence and I wouldn't change a thing. Some I've liked more than others. And I'll tell you - she writes it? I'm in. She is an excellent writer. She has a way with dialogue and story that is like no other. Yes, there are stream-of-conscious sentences and huge descriptions of houses and rooms and outfits and places but to me? This is what makes her books come alive. She creates a world and depthful characters and has brought this reader on many a romantic adventure. I have favorite characters, storylines and relationships. And yes, the characters come alive. When you're reading a "KA" book, you are going to escape - as any good bookworm lives to escape - and when its done, you're going to remember them. So all that said, I've read most of her books but this one is like you can see how far she has come as a storyteller. It was written during lockdown and you can almost see all the focused fine tuning that went into this one. Not that her others are unfocused but this one is highly polished - like her descriptions of everything from places to fashion to meals to tension building in a room - the finest details draw you in. This was a deep dive into a great story and we really get where her characters are coming from. Chloe and Judge leapt off the page for me. By the time they were ready to go all in - about 50% of the way into the story - I was in love with both of them. They were definitely a "just the two of us, made for each other" couple but the larger story of how much family informed their past, how much it meant to them to fine tune it and get it right in the present and future - that's where the real heart of the story is. The backstories aren't contrived - they're real. From the gut wrenching mistake of Chloe's uncle that hangs over their family to the glamour of Chloe's Hollywood sweetheart of a Mom to Judge's heartbreaking addict of a Mom and his Dad who lost his son for years. From the relationships between all the men in the story to the growing pains of siblings and step siblings and fighting to create a tribe that, in the end, is better because they are ALL - all in - flaws and friendship and family and fabulousness and all. Every relationship in the book - including the one they have with each other - impacts how they bring themselves wholly to each other and their happily ever after. The secondary characters are not just tossed in - they all have depth and back stories and you will form opinions (and crushes!) on them. Can hardly wait for Judge's friend Rix story. That said, I didn't want it to end. So grateful to have such a great book to read during this strange time we live in. Keeps the faith in happily ever after. Thanks KA. Really. Thanks. oxo

There is something magical about the way that this author creates a story. I find myself lost in the worlds that she creates. Her characters jump off the pages and become real. They don't just live on the pages of the book that she pens and I love that about her. Every decision that she makes when creating a new world and new characters is done precisely and with intention, because she knows that they all have a story waiting to be told... further down the line which always manages to get me excited for what story will come next.

That was most assuredly the case with Chloe and Judge. When Chloe was first introduced in the prequel novella to this series, it was apparent that Chloe was a force to be reckoned with. In that book, she was a scene-stealer in the few scenes that she was in. However, I knew that there had to be more to her story, and I was correct in that assumption. In this book, Chloe is still her fun self but the author finally dived into her vulnerabilities and I was here for that. I loved getting to see how she tackled everything in her life and didn't buckle under the weight of all of that. I felt her pain and guilt and anger over the way that things had and were unfolding. The demise of her parent's divorce, while still loving them despite it weighed heavy. Knowing that the person that she loved the most and had been instrumental in shaping who she was having a role in that destruction didn't help alleviate those feelings.

Judge was perfect in stepping into that role of helping bear the weight and putting her first. I loved that for her. On paper, these two were as opposite as one could be. I am all for opposites attract but even I had to wonder if the author knew what she was doing because this wasn't a love story of a heroine that needed a white knight because Chloe was definitely the type of woman that would always figure out how to come out on top. However, it wasn't until Judge went through some pretty major revelations and discovery of past issues from his childhood and, especially a particular scene, that I realized that the author knew what she was doing because Chloe was the embodiment of love. Together, they were perfect for each other. They were the foundation of being family and a reminder that family comes in a plethora of ways. Judge wasn't the typical KA alpha man who just bulldozed his way into their woman's life. Instead, he let Chloe set the pace and that was perfect for a character like Chloe.

The story had great cameos from previous characters as well as set up some of the other characters that will get a story in this series. There are a lot of characters in this family and I look forward to them all getting their story. I am anxious for the next story, if not a little surprised of who it will be, I thought for sure that it would have been a different character first. I am sure the author has a plan so I will not question it.

There were a lot of great messages that came from this story and made me love the author even more. She gives them without being preachy and makes me ponder her words long after I have finished reading them. She also added a few chapters in this story that gave me insight into a character that should not have the pull that it did but lord, it really did. I want to hate this character but the chapters in this story told me so much about the how and why of things that could have been just brushed aside but instead added another depth to the underlying story that started with Imogen and Duncan. I have a feeling that she will continue that in future stories and that makes me a little happy because there is a definite message about this character.

This book didn't start out perfect for me. In fact, I was a tad frustrated at how long it took for Chloe and Judge's actual relationship to start, which is unusual for a KA book, but after finally getting to the meat of the story I understood the slow approach that the author took in getting to that moment. She was creating a foundation and I am okay knowing that as this series continues the characters themselves will have more room to blossom. I highly recommend anything this author writes, and this book is no different. There is a reason that I own every book that she has ever written.

This was absolutely classic Kristen Ashley writing and I am here for it all! This story had depth and love and hurt and love that went so deep it was truly beyond the grave. The story was filled with tough moments that were written in such a respectful and truthful manner that your heart and soul were a part of it through the whole thing. There was a fierce heroine who loved so deeply and an alpha hero who didn’t show just how much he loved until it was raw and necessary. But when he did it was beautiful. KA writes her characters like no other!
Judge and Chloe were phenomenal. The deep way that they understood and needed one another was something to read. Each and every feeling jumped off the pages. I just couldn’t get enough of them. Deeply entwined in their story was the continuation of the family dynamics that were not only chosen by blood but a lot of it because of history and circumstance. This story wove all these dynamic in a way I have never read. Each character was a part of each other in one way or another and this story allowed Judge and a Chloe to be the heart of it all.
I absolutely can’t wait for this series to continue. as with all of KA series I am engaged and involved straight from the beginning never wanting the story to end. Again these books become a movie in my mind! I just want more and more! This is a definite must read and one of my favourites this year!

Following on from After the Climb the River Rain series kicks off with Chasing Serenity, the story of Chloe the daughter of Genny and Tom Pierce from After the Climb, and Judge Oakley who runs part of Duncan's business at River Rain.
No dramatic storyline, just a good KA romance with a few twists and turns for this opposites attract couple along the way. Love how Ms Ashley always weaves characters from other series into the story, and this book was no exception!!
Only complaint it ended too soon, and I would have liked a slightly longer epilogue; however I can't wait till Rix and Alex in February.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kristen Ashley at her best

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

Chasing Serenity is Kisten Ashley at her best. I was totally swept up in Chloe and Judge’s story. There is so much more to Chloe than what you see on the surface. At first I wasn’t really taken by her but once we really got to know herI loved her, just like everyone around her. Judge is a great guy and Her banter with Judge is fabulous. I loved the way their relationship unfolded and that Judge wasn’t afraid to make his feelings about her known. l loved that he had to work hard to win her because that made it that much sweeter. Together this couple is dynamite.

This story is about more than Judge and Chloe’s romance although that is the centerpiece. With their circle of family they are dealing with loss, suicide, addiction, divorce and general family drama. There is a lot of heartache and a lot of love, both romantic and familial in both Chloe and Judge’s lives. I lost count of how many times the story brought me to tears. And Chloe’s uncle Corey, wow my heart broke for him and he kept making me cry. I’d love it if we get more of Corey’s story.

My heart was completely wrapped up in this drama filled romance and I didn’t want it to end. Luckily, this is the first book in a new series so no doubt we will see more of Judge and Chloe, The next romance in this series is between Rix and Alex’s and I can’t wait to get my hands on their story which is due out on 15 February 2022.

4.0 out of 5 stars I liked it but

I liked it but I didn't love it . Kristen always writes family so very well and this was no exception. I found Chloe the heroine hard going at first mainly because she spoke like a member of the British aristocracy not a twenty four year old woman . But she grew on me due to the great writing. Judge was just scrumptious and as alpha as all Kirsten's leading men are . One thing I'm unsure of is Susie shepherd being lined up for tom . I liked tom as character even though he made mistakes Susie being the one that cost him his marriage. But we'll see how this plays out . As close and adjusted everyone seems to be I can't see that continuing when the woman your farther cheated with turns up on his arm without some fallout .

4.0 out of 5 stars Onto Rix & Alex next!
Reviewed in Australia on March 2, 2022
Chasing Serenity is all about Chloe & Judge finding love, and building family bonds even stronger. Corey/Uncle Corey gives such major creepy vibes at times, but he also clearly loved and adored Chloe and wanted to ensure she was always protected.

Gage & Sully really cemented their place as favourite characters in Chasing Serenity, they had Chloe's back and knew what to say and do to support her with Sasha & Matt. After reading After the Climb, I looked ahead to see who the main characters were in the next 2 books, and although I wasn't surprised that Chloe was up next, I was surprised to see Rix & Alex as the main characters in the following book. Well, after finishing Chasing Serenity I can see why they are up next and I'm moving straight onto Taking the Leap.

I almost missed the post-script at the end of Chasing Serenity, as once I turned to the "The End" page, my kindle automatically jumped straight to the ratings page. I back tracked and then found it - glad I did as it added more intrigue, make sure you don't miss it!!
