Circles of Light: M/M Romantic Fantasy (Farbonnur Elves Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 22 ratings

Velden's forgotten dream was supposed to avoid disaster, not cause one.

Alvarick's sunburns and scars prove he has no magic in his blood but won't stop the blood mages from claiming him as a plaything. When he's abducted during his last possible attempt to escape, he hopes for a quick death.

Six centuries and goddess interference have turned Velden's wait for his fated mate into a nightmare, one he's certain is a lie. Their goddess wouldn't allow the most powerful elf ever born to bond with the weakest, not if she expects to defeat the blood demon.

Alvarick's attraction to Velden, the dashing elf who dares to rescue him, overwhelms him with new emotions and uncanny access to Velden's private thoughts. If Velden must sacrifice himself to fulfill prophecy, Alvarick wants no part in it, but the curse on his skin leaves him powerless to prevent it.

Circles of Light is a male/male epic fantasy romance with a happy-for-now ending. The fated mates couple's tropes are grumpy/sunshine, experienced/virgin, and reluctant hero/chosen one. This novel contains a misunderstood prophecy, a meddling goddess, and badass sidekicks ready to take the fight to the blood mages. Circles of Light can be read as the first book of the Farbonnur Elves series. If you start here, consider reading Stone of Power before Tower of Lies, though the six books in the Farbonnur Elves series are best enjoyed in order.

This is definitely less confusing than the first book. There are still a lot of people in this book but since it is only told from Velden and Alvarick's POVs, it's a lot more clear. I'm still unsure about Valorias and if she is doing things because they are the right thing to do or if she is a jerk. We probably will not know until the end. I don't understand why Alvarick didn't just kill Esher instead of banishing him from the Circle but that may have been a character choice. I was also upset with Velden quite a bit throughout. I'm not sure if he has no sense of the bond between him and Alvarick because his memories were messed with. This is not me putting down this book at all. All these things and more made it an interesting read. If anyone can read this and have no interest in reading the next book, they are probably not a fan of fantasy books to begin with.

A little less chaotic than the first book, this focuses on two outcast elves: one with a hidden well of power and one with a massive lack of self esteem. And a dead prince who it appears sold his whole family out to a blood mage/necromancer trying to summon a world-eating demon.

Sometimes I get Tolkien vibes with (immortal elves), sometimes Superman (the sun recharges elven magic), and sometimes DND (specially when casting detect magic, arranging a marching order and killing skeletons).

I would strongly suggest reading the first book in the series in order to understand the second book better. I wouldn’t say it’s required but it will improve your overall enjoyment of the story in my opinion.
Alvarick and Velden Our faded mates. No matter what Velden a.k.a. Denny believes. This book takes us on a journey so that these two mates can ultimately fulfill their destiny.

There are plenty of obstacles that they have to overcome along the way. We also meet new foes. What I really enjoyed the most about the book probably was just watching these two develop a relationship even though one of them is trying to fight it for all it’s worth. It does appear that nobody actually understands what the prophecy is but that is also part of the journey.

I just really love these two characters. I’m excited to see their story continue.

(I received an ARC copy but this is my honest unbiased opinion.)

I am really enjoying this story, which seems kind of odd, because I don't understand what is going on much of the time. I just feel there is so much history I don't know. The large time jump between books 1 and 2, with some information and events decided through a letter left behind by a long-deceased character who had visions, was also confusing. Veldani's continued dedication to a goddess who doesn't seem to favor him and a former partner that everyone agrees is a total A$$, are extremely frustrating, but I admire his commitment to putting saving the world first. I don't know if I am rooting for Faraki and Veldani, but I loved Alvarick, Werl, and Garq. Regardless of my ambivalence for some characters and events, I am very much committed to reading future books. I MUST know how everything works out in the end and who is paired together at the conclusion. Hopefully, all my questions will be answered.

I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Alvarick and Velden, are fated but Velden believes Alvarick is meant for someone else, not the lowest elf that he is.

This has to be one of the strangest books I’ve read. So many names and gods(?) and just outright different words. A lot of them I could figure out their meanings by the way they were used and in what context. That said it was a totally engrossing story.

I’m glad I read the first book. While Circles could be read alone, I think the first book gave quite a bit background and helped with understanding the strangeness of this world. Not totally though, I’m still confused on some points. Probably always will be which doesn’t preclude my desire for the conclusion of Denny and Al’s story.

I’ve always liked fated love stories and this one is pretty good, specially if you ignore Denny’s attempts to believe his fated is meant for someone else.

This takes place about ten years after Stone of Power, and I would advise reading that one first to get the full understanding. This is Alvarick and Velden’s story. The world building is phenomenal!! They are fated but Alvarick has doubts. I loved their journey to be together and what a journey it was!! I loved their development. Overall, an outstanding read! The story was really well written, the pacing was smooth, highly recommend. I am voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.

Since I didn't read the first book in the Farbonnur Elves series, I was a bit confused about the political intrigues and by all the different camps and allegiances in this war. I felt I was missing a lot of background, backstory and antecedent of the series that helped with understanding the world building. I didn't understand the Kites vs the Celastians. And I barely could piece together the different types of powers.

However I love the story of Alvarick and Velden. I love their journey and the angst between them. I love how Alvarick hadn't felt any love until he met Velden. They were truly meant for only each other, true Fated mates.

Really enjoyed reading the start of Alvarick's and Velden's story and can't wait to see their HFN become an HEA. The world building here is fantastic and there are so many different types of paranormals to get to know from blood mages, elves, goddesses to zombies. The political machinations are a big part of the world building and I loved that. Cannot wait for the next book.
