From the Author

"I don't try to describe the future. I try to prevent it." ~ Ray Bradbury
I'm not a futurist. That's a losing game. However, in the world-building for
Citizen Second Class, I looked around and around and I saw that the arc of history can easily bend toward a lot of crap we're not going to like. If you're a fan of Ayn Rand, this novel is not for you. Broke and feeling oppressed? Getting warmer. Identify with the Resistance? Hello, chum! Know the threat of the tippy-top 1% and believe in the climate crisis? Welcome and read on! You're in for a treat!

I'm in the brain tickle business so I've got lots of apocalyptic stories. FInd them all at AllThatChazz.com. Cheers and, really, thanks for reading!

Unlike many science fiction books of late, this one doesn't rely on zombies or plagues to create a dystopia. Instead, we see an all too possible future where, in the face of climate change, the rich have found a way to protect themselves from the hardships while amassing ever more wealth and making the poor ever poorer. We follow one of the second class citizens as she survives and see her strength as we learn her history and watch her take on the rich.

Oh, did I enjoy this ride! The main character is Kismet and she is tough, but with feelings, conflicted, but determined. She is loyal to her family and her mission, but also explores the difficulty of what she is asked to do. She is questioning....always questioning. She is verbally skilled and can spar with others. A magnificently rewarding experience in this “New Atlanta” of ours. I enjoyed the quick pace of the novel; however, I did find myself wishing for a bit more description (clothes, gates, structures, the landscape, and in the concluding pages). All in all, a tremendously entertaining and thought-provoking read, including some very eerie and specific similarities to current issues and our current time.

With Citizen Second Class, Robert Chazz Chute has taken the darkest of today's news headlines and woven them into a disturbingly plausible near future where the "Select Few" rule the US and the rest of the nation battles to simply stay alive. Kismet Beatriz is one of those trying to survive in the harsh world outside the walls of New Atlanta but she's not content to just accept her fate. Kismet's tale is a fast-paced, gripping journey through a dystopian nightmare. Tightly written and packed with twists and turns, Citizen Second Class kept me glued to my Kindle right from the opening page. Highly recommended.

Interesting concept and characters combine with a thoroughly believable future. Couldn't stop reading until the end, though the conclusion is just too gentle for me. It's a well-to-do tale overall!

In a world where inequality has run amuck, society turns on itself in subjugation to the whims of the privileged. Chute is a master storyteller, and his latest will have you looking at your neighbor and wondering "could this happen here?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Move over Katniss Everdean
Reviewed in Canada on January 6, 2020
Move over Katniss Everdean there’s a new dystopian resistance warrior in town. Robert Chazz Chute’s new novel tells the story of women as villains, spies, matriarchs, icons and plucky heroes. Set in a future that could be a lot sooner than we think, with the richer getting richer and the poor getting ever poorer, the author takes us to a world where high walls and food insecurity., mass migrations and the struggle to survice are the norm. A select few rise to the top due to wealth or military service but the crazy thing is that even the richest of the rich are still vulnerable. The world's resources are shrinking for everyone. But the real tragedy is that no matter how little you have, there is always something to lose. Part Hunger Games, part Handmaid's Tale and colored with present day news stories ratched up to the next level (more walls, bigger gap between rich and poor, climate change and the rise of fascism), Citizen Second Class is a great read for teens and up. In fact I could have kept reading! Despite the very real possibility of this dystopian world, there is always hope (and an unexpected ending). Loved it.
