The factory is having financial troubles and may close. So she decides to investigate with the help of her retired Detective father and some close friends she tries to solve the mystery. I enjoyed this story a lot of twists and turns and when I discovered the murderer I was shocked. This is an interesting read.

Agatha is a special author who has a way of writing that allows the reader to deeply connect with the plot and story. I was raised by a mother similar to Claire’s. Whatever I did, it was never good enough. I got perfect grades in grad school for example…she said it was an easy college. When I fell in love…he wasn’t college educated, he was Jewish, and he was too I,even when I got my first teaching job she said what a waste of my talents….I was teaching severely handicapped young children. However, when I was 42, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After 20 years of not talking to me….she showed up. I forgave her and we moved on. She has passed on now…I’m grateful that we got to connect at the very end.

Claire Harris dreams of opening her own candle shop one day. In her free time she works on scent formulas and gifts, her creations to friends and family. For now she is stuck working in a candle factory, where working conditions continue to deteriorate after the previous owner’s daughter has taken over the company.

Everything changes when her boss falls to her death in the factory with Claire as a witness. To make matters worse, the fall was no accident, the woman was pushed. Claire enlists her father, a retired detective inspector, and her friend Damon to help her find the murderer. What they uncover is a tangled web and a list of suspects.

This is the first book in the Claire's Candles Cozy Mystery Series. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. The author did a good job developing each of them. I also liked the small English village that is the setting to the story. The plot moves at a comfortable pace. More than once I found myself cringing at a position Claire placed herself in, all in the name of solving the murder. I recommend this book and look forward to reading the next in the series.

Claire Harris has always wanted her own candle store. Instead, she's worked at the local (main employer) candle factory for 17 years. The factory has been there since the 1800's. The same family has run it & the family is difunctional. Claire is in her mid-30's & still lives w/her parents. Her mom is very critical of her weight & lace of a BF - especially since she wants grand kids. Her dad took an early retirement from the PD because of a benign brain tumor. There's an empty store front w/an apt. upstairs that Claire really wants but can't afford. Meanwhile, there was either an accidental death or suicide at the factory that has caused upset. Then the current family member running it, dies in a similar manner, then the safety guy is found in a shallow grave. Claire & her dad decide to investigate the murders. The murderer is a surprise to the reader. Good plot & interesting characters w/twists & turns. Claire's BFF is the agent that shows her the house.....seems to have the ideal family, or does she. Claire's teenage crush, former neighbor turns up w/2 kids & no wife....is there a romance there or not? What happens to her notebook of candle recipes....will finding it help her. Read it & find out. I'll be looking for the next in this series.

Claire is an unlikely heroine with her boring life, however boring fast changes to different, even exciting as we keep reading. Claire works in the local candle factory sticking on labels but she secretly experiments making her own candles. You see she has a dream of one day opening her own candle shop. Then she discovers her best formula has been stolen.

What follows is where Claire's boring life changes. Murder and mayhem in abundance.

Can Claire, with the help of her ex cop dad, solve the murders? Can Claire get her candle formula back? Will she be able to make her dream come true? Will the candle factory close? You can find the answers while enjoying a good read.

I look forward to more and have pre ordered the next in this series.

I have been a fan of the Peridale series for years and was not sure what I would make of Agatha Frost's new series. Would I like the characters? Would they be as well-developed as the Peridale characters? Would the plot pull me in as readily as with her other books? The answer is yes, yes and yes! Before I get into my review, I want to show the cover of Vanilla Bean Vengeance some love. I don’t usually go on about the covers, because you know you should judge a book by its cover and all that, but it’s so cute and fits the book perfectly.

So I read the first in Agatha Frost’s Peridale Cafe series a few months ago, so when I saw Vanilla Bean Vengeance, the first in the Claire’s candle series, I want to see what that’s all about. I’m always on the lookout for a new twist on the whole cozy mystery tropes, .i.e. Bakeries, witches, bookshops etc and I thought, I haven’t come across candles before, so I’ll admit I was intrigued on how the two would mesh.

Vanilla Bean Vengeance has all the typical cozy ingredients, a village setting, a determined amateur sleuth with a hint of potential romance.

My issue with Agatha Frost’s other series is I felt the characters were a little flat but I really liked Claire, she’s a character I really found myself rooting for. Plus a fab array of quirky back up characters, although Claire’s pushy mother who’s obsessed with her daughter getting married and having kids kind of got on my nerves.

The story kept me guessing to the end and I’ve already put the second in the series, Black Cherry Betrayal on my tbr list.
