About the author

Agatha lives in the North West English county of Lancashire with her two cuddly beagles and one cat.
When Agatha isn’t writing, she loves reading head-scratching mysteries and thrillers, coffee, baking, and exploring her local countryside on long dog walks.
From a young age, Agatha devoured the great British murder mystery books and television shows, ample inspiration for her Peridale Café and Claire’s Candles series. She loves writing about family women who juggle their ordinary village lives with the challenges of amateur sleuthing.
Add in some good food, close friends and family, cute pets, and plenty of twists and turns, and you have a classic Agatha Frost mystery.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2024The characters are wonderful and quirky. The plot is twisty and intense. The world building is great. I'm looking forward to reading the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2024I am really enjoying this series. This one got a little dark but was very interesting. Can't wait to see where it goes.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024I had read the first 32 volumes of the Peridale Cafe series from the same author before I ventured onto Claire's Candles. I was frankly scared to try it, the sample chapters not piquing my curiosity to a great extent. But after I finish all the Peridale Cafe books available at the time, there were quite a few more Claire's Candles books available. Figuring the worst that could happen is spending time reading but not enjoying it, I lit the wick on the series.
And I'm glad I did. The main characters are charming (though fairly imperfect, much like most human beings, were they honest with themselves). The minor characters are... eccentric or quirky. The mysteries are intriguing. All in all, quite enjoyable. My favorite character is Damon because he is such a geek for Doctor Who. I'm not at his level, but I have enjoyed the New Who (2005+) fairly well. [FTR, Tom Baker is still my doctor]
And then I get to this Book 5, Fresh Linen Fraud. The characters really shine here. Greater depth, characters who, while not caricatures, are stuck where they are for various reasons and suddenly are able to advance (all organic from the plot, not grafted on haphazardly).
Yes, I enjoyed this entry in the series the most so far and, as does the author, I recommend starting from Book 1. While the mystery itself is self-contained, the character development should be read in series order. Sounds like a commitment or something, but think of it as "I get to" rather than "I have to". I don't think you'll be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2022I've just finished Book 5 of the Claire's Candles series, and am both thoroughly satisfied - the murder investigation was well-plotted and intriguing until its conclusion, AND the characters and the relationships between them just grow more lifelike and fleshed out with each book - and bummed because this is the last one of the series currently available; I'm already feeling that I'll be in withdrawal soon, craving another Claire fix that won't be satisfied until Agatha Frost writes some more books.
And I've mentioned it in another review, but I truly believe this series would make a wonderful - and popular - cozy mystery show if only BBC, ITV, or Acorn picks it up (hint, hint!!). Given how UK show series have limited numbers of episodes, these first five books are the perfect ones to choose - the plots are unique, the characters grow, and there are even "end of series 1" resolutions to some of the plot through-lines (no annoying cliffhangers here, yay!) while still providing space and possibilities for subsequent "series" ("seasons" for Americans) to take the stories even further. Hope some showrunner and/or producer can hear about this series soon!
And in the meantime, I can wholeheartedly recommend this series to all - even folks who think they may not be interested in cozy mysteries. With everything going on in the world at present that's upsetting and increasing our stress and anxiety, it's lovely to have a place to escape to that is still recognizably real.
Thanks, Agatha Frost, for helping make the last few weeks so thoroughly enjoyable for me. May you write many, many more books about Claire and the rest of the gang - I know I can't wait!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021It was wonderful to renew my acquaintance with Claire, her family, and her friends, just as it was to visit her village again.I love that we discover the reason. For Claire's mother's sharp tone, critical thought patterns, and obsessive behaviors and even more, that she found her voice to declare her desire to change. And this was only an almost unrelated tangent to the murder and mayhem which were sudden and puzzling. Romance, well, charming and delightful. Saying more would perhaps be spoilers. If you've enjoyed previous Claire's Candles mysteries, you'll love this one. While it's very good as a standalone, it's superb as another in the series. Kudos, Agatha! You've excelled yet again.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2021Agatha Frost’s “Peridale Cafe” cozy mystery series is my favorite series. Her new series “Claire’s Candles” is becoming another favorite series. The newest book in the “Claire Candles” series is the best book in it so far. I love the character development between not only Claire and Ryan, but also of Claire’s mother, Janet. This book shows a different side of Janet and I feel she, not Claire, was the “star” of the book. The plot of this book had many very interesting twists and turns. I kept guessing who the culprit was and was proved wrong at every twist and turn. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and learning more about the characters. I definitely recommend this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2021Murder managed. Fraud found out. Parents pacified. A canal conquered. Idiots identified. Polish people pursued. Shotguns stifled. And an unsurprising surprise party.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
At first I wasn’t sure, it’s similar formula to Peridale books which I Love.. but as I read onwards the relationships with her Mum and Dad, friends really make the story shine. Looking forward to many more 🤞🏻

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
This is the fifth book in the series and it is by far, my favourite so far.
Full stop-I could not put it down!
Claire is a protagonist that really captures my attention and her contemporary life is written realistically.
This latest offering showed me a side of Claire’s mother Janet, which surprised me, but I loved.
The village and its inhabitants are engaging and I cannot wait to read more about them.
As always, Agatha Frost has delivered a top notch whodunit that kept me guessing until the very end.
I look forward to reading the next in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Janet cleans up her act!
I think this is Claire's best yet! I like the development in her relationship with her mother and I loved Moreen and that she got her come-uppance, dreadful woman! Being a PE teacher myself, I have many like her!!!! The investigation was good, excellent characters who always seem like real people that one might meet on a walk in the park! Pleased for Claire and Ryan I hope this lasts! Good story, I enjoyed reading this one, very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Linen is Fresh and exciting!
I was very excited reading the preview chapter at the end of the latest installment of the Peridale Cafe series (I throughly recommend that too!) and it did not disappoint. It was exciting and thrilling, and kept you guessing all the way through! Claire is a girl after my own heart, she loves a pint with her friends and loves her family dearly. Seeing her come into her own and become more confident in herself has been a real treat which has seemed to influence her family as they seem to find their best selves.
