- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2024This was a very good read from a different vantage point. I don't believe there was a protagonist in this story, which isn't a bad thing. Very descriptive.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2021CLAIRE'S APOCALYPSE by K.T. Rose is more of a suspense drama than a sci-fi horror story, and the undead are barely part of the story. Very little action, and not much character development either. Not what I've come to expect from the author.
I recommend A TRINITY OF WICKED TALES: JILTED instead.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2022When Claire is fired by the new general and ordered to destroy the project she has been working on for the last 9 years she just can't do it. So when another offers to buy her project for 3 million plus 3 tickets for she, her husband, and daughter to an underground bunker she jumps at the chance. After all it is better for her viral infection to be locked away somewhere then to be destroyed like it never existed. What is the worst that can happen? Or will she turn her back on this and do the right thing, destroying this thing that never should have existed and could end life as we know it.
I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. I am always one for an apocalyptic book or even post apocalyptic so I was very excited for this book. This is kind of a starting point book.
With most apocalyptic books it is after the catalyst, but this is what leads up to the apocalypse. Unfortunately, this book isn't completely implausible. Too many people play with biochemistry and things that are best left alone. I would like to know what happens next. If there is a cure. What the survival rate is. All kinds of things.
Normally I try not to give things away, but since the title of the book includes that it is about an apocalypse I figure what I have disclosed is easy enough to guess. What the sickness does, how it is released, by who, and when is still a mystery. I hope that there is more to this story in the future as this only gives a snippet of what I want to know. It was a very intriguing story and I enjoyed reading it.
I have to say that I absolutely hated Claire's family. Her husband takes advantage of her. I can't really say I hate her daughter. She's nine. So her snapping and saying things to her mother after she lost her job is forgivable. The husband though. He plays in gigs in a band while she supports their family. While I agree she should have bit her tongue and destroyed it he isn't helping matters any. While it didn't come out and say it it was as if the fact he may have to grow up and be a real adult was the worst possible thing that could happen. Can't say I respect those qualities in either sex be it male or female.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2021I asked to review this short story when the opportunity came up. This story is written not only by an author I’ve reviewed before, a novel, but also one of my fellow team members at Blackthorn Book Tours. To me, as a fellow writer, it is imperative to get feedback from all kinds of readers, including my peers. They have special insight into the writing process and can often offer some very valuable creative and constructive feedback. The chance to do this with a fellow team member was something I could not pass up. Not to mention that I enjoyed the novel I first read by Rose, The Haunting of Hotel Gallagher (my review of it can be found on my website.) When I saw that Rose had written a short story, I jumped on the chance to read and review it. So, here we go!
This short story, Claire’s Apocalypse, packed the punch of a full sci-fi horror novel into, get this, about 40 pages. 40 pages!!! Such a short read for right before bed…for the brave souls. Not only is this not the typical apocalyptic story, it’s much more realistic and possible than I think a lot of people realize. This adds an exceptional feeling of fear and suspense to the story.
Rose is a true master of vocabulary; this must be pointed out. This short story is full of amazingly poignant word choices depicting the most vivid and terrifying images the mind can conjure up when reading this tale. This is truly an example of what I consider to be a practically perfect sci-fi horror story. And I am not usually a sci-fi fan. Normally it doesn’t really blow my hair back, so to speak. But this story gave me a new appreciation for the science fiction scene and the different uses of that theme.
Although I don’t want to give too much away, I know you want to know a little about the story itself. All I am willing to say is that it is about a young woman working with biochemical agents that runs into some very real physical and moral dilemmas.
Here is the summary:
The world may be doomed by her mistake...unless she has the will to save it.
In the laboratories of the nation’s secret Bioweapons Division, Dr. Claire Lyle houses vials that could trigger the apocalypse. After a decade of neglecting her husband and daughter to develop the virus, Claire has finally created the most infectious microbe known to man. Excited to share the news about her creation, she gives an update on the project to her new superior, only for him to demand it be destroyed.
With all hope of negotiating for the project’s survival gone and a broken promise remaining where an effective vaccine should have been, Claire is forced to choose a different path, one which includes a distraught co-worker who is full of damning secrets.
I strongly recommend this story. It was such a quick read and it really grabs you from the start and just keeps going.
