The Case of the Deceased Clerk (Caster & Fleet Mysteries Book 3) Kindle Edition
The Department recruit the duo to investigate London’s mediums and mesmerists, several of whom are suspected of fraud. Katherine and Connie must pose as clients to discover what goes on behind closed doors.
The deeper they delve, the more unsettling the duo’s findings become. Disturbing revelations shake their confidence in themselves and their mission. They are followed, and spied on. And when Miss Robson joins the team, she raises a ghost whom she had hoped was laid to rest for ever…
Both women face challenges in their personal lives, too. Connie has to balance her new career and her married life, while Katherine makes an enemy who threatens her chance of happiness and the success of their investigation.
Can Katherine and Connie see past the smoke and mirrors to uncover the truth?
The Case of the Deceased Clerk is the third book in the Caster & Fleet mystery series, set in 1890s London.

Liz Hedgecock grew up in London, England, did an English degree, and then took forever to start writing. After several years working in the National Health Service, some short stories crept into the world. A few even won prizes. Then the stories started to grow longer...
Now Liz travels between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, murdering people. To be fair, she does usually clean up after herself.
Liz’s reimaginings of Sherlock Holmes, her Pippa Parker cozy mystery series, and the Caster & Fleet Victorian mystery series (with Paula Harmon) are available in ebook and paperback.
Liz lives in Cheshire with her husband and two sons, and when she’s not writing or child-wrangling you can usually find her reading, messing about on Twitter, or cooing over stuff in museums and art galleries. That's her story, anyway, and she's sticking to it.

Paula Harmon was born in north London but her life as a country girl began at eighteen months when the family moved out, trailing slowly westwards from small town to village before settling in South Wales when she was eight.
Her writing life started with “Clanger” fan fiction and making up stories to act out with a kindred spirit. These largely involved flying unicorns. In later Welsh years, she wandered lonely as a … well, lonely person, in woods and streams and wrote about portals to another world and mysterious woodland spirits. But her greatest love was for historical fiction and mysteries and now she's writing her own.
With no clear idea what she wanted to be when she grew up apart from a writer, she graduated from Chichester University (Bishop Otter College) with a BA in English Literature and a vague idea that, after a bit of life experience, if all else failed, she’d become a teacher, even though she had never grown taller than the average ten year old. Whatever else happened, she was determined NOT to become a civil servant like her mother and be able to talk in form numbers.
At her first job interview, she answered “where do you see yourself in 10 years” with “writing” as opposed to “progressing in your company.” She didn’t get that job. She tried teaching and realised the one thing the world did not need was another bad teacher. Somehow or other she subsequently ended up as a civil servant and if you need to know a form number, she is your woman.
Her short stories include dragons, angst ridden teenagers, portals and civil servants (though not all in the same story - yet). Perhaps all the life experience was worth it in the end.
She lives in Dorset with her husband, has two adult children..

- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2023Each book in the series thus far has continued to improve over the last. This writing team of Harmon and Hedgecock have combined their skills to deliver a sad, intense, humorous, and emotional tale. The challenge of bringing so many parts and elements together so smoothly makes it incredibly difficult to share without ruining any and all of the work. This is a must read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2023I love these books so much. There is a detail that bothers me though. They use the term smog many times in describing the air quality in London in the late 1800s. The term was not even invented until 1905 and really not widely used For decades after that. Seems like a little research would’ve revealed that.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2022It's good to catch up with Katherine & Connie. The popularity of spiritualism sets the background for our duo to go undercover for a new section of the Department. Ostensibly looking for mediums not declaring all their income, there is actually another investigation into possible treason. Katherine & Connie enlist James & Albert among others to discover the truth.
The Castor & Fleet Mysteries are fascinating historical reads that I will continue to eagerly follow.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2022The stories are each unique most series after a while you know what will happen. These are all fresh and you get to be a part of their on going lives.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2020Katherine and Connie are out to investigate a string of mediums who may be out to defraud the people of London.
Connie has to try to balance her new married life with the demands of a job that her husband doesn't really want her to have.
And Katherine finally hears news about her missing father.
Pro's:
A fun story with developed characters and a bit of humor.
Con's:
While it was an entertaining story, there were places that it felt that the authors were trying a bit too hard.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2019A terrific read that has a plot centred on the different types of spiritualism that arose after Prince Albert's death in Victorian England. A plot of manipulations, brainwashing, murder and betrayals. If you loved this you will love Amanda Quick's Don't Look Back. The characters are now entering another stage in life. Connie is finding married life different to what she envisaged whilst James is leading up to the big question.
The Department wants a full report on the mediums and spiritualists that abound. They seem to think that there is a dark side to this. Will she take on the new job and who will she get to help her? Will their investigation leads to attempts on them and their families? Can they find out the truth as too the underbelly of this strange phenomenon? Plus will Mina find out what happened to the love of her life? Did he really commit suicide and where is the report that went missing around the time of his death? Will James pop the question? Will news about her Father come forth?
- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2019These ladies have got spunk! Just what I needed for a quick pick me up on a day when spring was supposed to arrive but didn't. I loved the chapter markers - Gloves and a teapot too! It seemed to make the reading extra special.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2019The characters are fun and the book is a pleasant way to while away a rainy afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid
The third in the series is a splendid cosy mystery which weaves its way around Victorian London. Beautifully written with a make you smile humour as Katherine marries, and Connie blushes her way through social conventions.
