Breakers of the Dawn by Zachariah Wahrer

The Backworlds by M. Pax

M. Pax is the author for those who love to escape this world. The weird beckons to her, and she blames Oregon. She has a herd of cats who were once lost and are no longer (in fact, they're quite spoiled) and works as a star guide at Pine Mountain Observatory in the summers. Places she explores and people she meets, past and present, inspire her stories. Come along for the ride.
C. Gockel has been writing stories for her friends and family since the dark ages (i.e., before word processors existed.) A few years ago, she started posting those stories to the intertubes. She received emails, messages, and reviews from her fans telling her she should 'do this professionally.' She didn't; she is a coward and life as a digital designer, copywriter and coder is more dependable. But in the end, her husband's nagging wore her down: "You could be the next '50 Shades of Gray' and I could retire!" Unfortunately, the author writes science fiction and fantasy, and isn't particularly good at writing erotica. She is sad about this; she'd love for her husband to be able to retire and just work for her so she could nag him.
At the moment, Ms. Gockel is working on the next installment of the Archangel Project.

Deirdre Gould lives in Central Maine with her three children and husband. She's also resided in northern Idaho, coastal Virginia and central Pennsylvania, but all of them just led her back home. The winters sure are cold, but that just means the zombies run slower. The area is isolated, but that just means the apocalyptic diseases don't spread as quickly. And the storms are bad enough that no one thinks you're crazy for "prepping." It's kind of ideal for a post-apocalypse writer when you think about it.

Space Opera is people. There it is.
Space opera has fabulous space ships, fantastic planets, laser weapons and epic battles. We’ve discarded the idea that future astronauts wear spandex suits and silver lipstick, and now our heroes get to wear real clothes. They have adventures and super technology and they meet aliens and save the galaxy again and again.
But when I look at the science fiction stories that have appealed to me the most, I see that they focus on the characters. Their plights, faults, idiosyncrasies are what give life to the backdrop of planets and space ships. I suppose you could place Han, Leia, Luke and Anakin in a contemporary setting right here on planet Earth and the dynamics would still work. It’s still a fun story without the lightsabers. But not the other way around. Without the characters’ story, a big chunk of Star Wars would lack considerable luster.
So that is the route I’ve taken with my stories. The absolute freedom of escaping Earth’s gravity and inventing things (always keeping within the realm of probability, of course) is why I love science fiction. I can make it rain mercury if I want to. I think I do, actually, somewhere.
But it’s the people in these stories—not too alien, not too perfect, not always happy with their lot or each other—who give meaning to the mercury rain and the space elevators. The people, for the most part likable people, are what turns science fiction into space opera. (Well, and space guns. Must have space guns.)
For my space operas, I’ve taken the problems of our human condition to see what we’d do with them in outer space. Most fascinating to me are the grey areas between good and evil and how we assign those qualities.
The Targon Tales is an action-packed space opera collection of related but self-contained books revolving around a hundred-year-old conflict between a colonizing Commonwealth of allied planets and those who rebel against it. In struggles like these, can there really be a “good guy” and a “bad guy”? The main characters, having chosen sides, must find ways to hang on to their ideals while working within a system that doesn’t always play by its own rules.
At times violent, sometimes light-hearted, the collection takes us to the many worlds of Trans-Targon to meet species who seem oddly similar as their shared DNA offers an ongoing mystery. But the similarities that bring them together are also at the root of the trouble between them all.
Please visit my web site at www.chrisreher.com for info about my books and some of the (non-fiction) science behind some of the concepts used in the stories.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2020Even though I'm not much of a sci-fi reader, I picked this up to add to my "to read" collection to help keep me occupied through this Covid thing. I knew it was a collection of "book 1 of whatever" books. It cost nothing, so what the hey.
And I was pleasantly surprised! A good read throughout, and not a dud in the collection. Each story finishes, no dumb cliffhangers obviously designed to force you to buy the next book to resolve the main conflict in the book (something crappy indie authors employ, which, btw, is a guaranteed way to get me to never buy anything from that author ever).
Of course, the umbrella series story has yet to play out in other books, but that's obvious and to be expected. But the stories in this collection wrap things up satisfactorily, and are done well enough that -- even though, again, I'm not really much of a sci-fi reader -- with a few of these books, I'm actually considering continuing on with their respective series installments to see how things turn out.
Good stuff!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2023A few grammatical errors, but nothing serious. I like the fact that not everyone makes it. The author does a nice job. I would definitely read more. Good job.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2019I bought the boxed set because I love C. Gockel's writing, and I loved Archangel Down (besides her wonderful Loki series I Bring the Fire). Based on the excellence of her writing, I assume the rest of the books will be great as well. So far, I am not disappointed!
You need to grab this boxed set! It has great stories which are first in series... and I see a few series I need to be reading next! I do urge you to grab C. Gockel's series Archangel series - it's a fun series! Once you get a glimpse into this series, you will want to know what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2021The first stories were OK. The last 3 were meh. I do not recommend this book at all and will not continue reading any of them
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2023This is a free box 📦 set that is free on Amazon as a e-book of seven novels. I picked this up about 2.5 years ago.
Each book is different with interesting well developed characters lots of action, misdirection, and violence leading to each conclusion. As with all box 📦 sets you will like some better than others but that is normal.
I listened 🎶 to three of these novels as individually novel, one, did and seven. So I only had to listen to four novels to finish this box 📦set.
I would recommend this box 📦 set to 👍 readers of fantasy futuristic space novels 👍🔰. 2023 👒😀☺😈
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2024Thoroughly enjoyed reading this awesome series of different books. Now that I've finished it want to continue all 7 series. Thank you so much.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2020If your looking for a good set of sci-fi books then look no further. Not the best I've read but for sure it is very close to it. A few too many curses for my taste but at least they came sporadic and in character and not at all overly gratuitous. I recommend this for the more mature readers, not offended by an off color phrase or word or two.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2021So many good starts to stories, but with this many reviews to write it would be very hard to give an honest review of individual stories. Overall there are many of these stories that readers will want to follow up and read the next installments. Overall the stories are imaginative and the writers have created stories which will be of interest to many readers.

Great action in all of the books including a shallow and at the end quite merciless love story in the last one.

Everything in this series has been previously said and done. I was determined to get through it but it was painful. Not a good book for a seasoned reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Assorted stories
Several series hear that I've been reading, but for reasons I can't put my finger on, as a whole, I struggled with it. Not sure why, I was feeling unwell at the time, reading was tiring me and giving me a headache. All good stories, just couldn't feel a connection.
