No Gravestone Unturned Cobble Cove Mystery #5 (Cobble Cove Mysteries) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

It’s October in Cobble Cove, and Alicia is busy preparing for the library’s Halloween party when she learns that John’s aunt from Florida has died and that John’s cousins and their spouses are coming to town to bury their mother. The day after the funeral, the caretaker’s son is found dead by John’s grandfather’s gravestone, from a blow on the head. The only witness seems to be Sneaky the library cat, who, having left the library, turned up at Alicia’s door with blood and dirt on him.

As Alicia, Gilly, and Sheriff Ramsay investigate, a generation of family secrets is uncovered. Are one of the guests staying at the inn a killer? Will the humans solve the crime, and can Sneaky, Kittykai, and Salem, the inn’s guest cat, team up to help?

My name is Debbie De Louise. I’m a retired reference librarian from a public library on Long Island and the award-winning author of the Cobble Cove and Buttercup Bend cozy mystery series. I've also published standalone novels of various genres, a non-fiction cat book, and a collection of cat poems.

My first novel, a paranormal romance, CLOUDY RAINBOW, was written after my beloved cat, Floppy, died from diabetic and liver complications. The book was dedicated to him, and he is featured as a character in it. Previously self-published, it was reprinted by my publisher with fresh edits, a new cover, and a few updates.

My second novel, the first book of the Cobble Cove mystery series, A STONE'S THROW, is the story of a widowed librarian who visits her husband's hometown and finds a new love with the town's newspaper publisher but also discovers some alarming truths about her husband's death and its connection to the publisher and his family. The other books in my Cobble Cove series include BETWEEN A ROCK AND A HARD PLACE, WRITTEN IN STONE, LOVE ON THE ROCKS, AND NO GRAVESTONE UNTURNED.

The Cobble Cove Stories, previously published as eBooks, include SNEAKY'S CHRISTMAS MYSTERY (winner of the Cat Writers' Association's Muse Medallion award), SNEAKY'S SUMMER MYSTERY, and KITTYKAI'S EASTER MYSTERY, are now included in a print edition along with a new story. The collection is called SNEAKY'S SUPERNATURAL MYSTERY AND OTHER COBBLE COVE STORIES.

My second cozy mystery series, The Buttercup Bend cozy mysteries, feature Cathy Carter who co-owns a pet rescue and animal cemetery in the small town of Buttercup Bend in the Catskills. In addition to her pet business, Cathy is also a photographer for the town’s newspaper, THE BUTTERCUP BUGLE, Her adventures include THE CASE OF THE CAT CRAZY LADY, THE CASE OF THE PARROT LOVING PROFESSOR, THE CASE OF THE LLAMA RAISING LIBRARIAN, THE CASE OF THE WHALE WATCHING WEDDING PLANNER and THE CASE OF THE REPTILE RESCUING RECEPTIONIST..

I've also published three standalone mysteries, REASON TO DIE, SEA SCOPE, and MEMORY MAKERS. My time-travel novel, TIME'S RELATIVE, won the Muse Medallion from the Cat Writers' Association. My non-fiction cat book, MEMORIES AND MEOWS, features full-color photos of my cats and is told from their points of view about feline health and behavior issues. MEOWS AND PURRS is my collection of cat poetry based on my current and past cats. It includes photos and notes about what inspired me to write the poems. My latest book, A MIXED BAG OF CAT TAILS, is a multi-genre collection featuring short stories that include cats.

I’m a member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters-in-Crime, the Cat Writers' Association, the South Carolina Writer's Association, and the North Carolina Writers Network and have published articles in Cats Magazine and Catnip (Tufts University Veterinary Newsletter). I won the Glamour Puss special award from Hartz Corporation for my Catstercom article, “Brushing your cat for bonding, beauty, and better health.” My short mystery, “Stitches in Time” was published in the CAT CRIMES THROUGH TIME Anthology. My poems are featured in the NASSAU COUNTY VOICES IN VERSE and the BARDS ANNUAL anthologies. I recently moved to South Carolina with my husband, Anthony; daughter, Holly; and our cats, Harry, and Hermione. We added a new kitten, Soup, to our household in September 2024. She's featured in my upoming mystery that will be the first of a new series.

I am looking forward to reading the books in this series that I missed--and any future ones.
The first of the series. The first Cobble Cove book is A Stone's Throw. The second one is Between a Rock and a Hard Place. Celebrating Christmas with the Characters introduced was the third book-it's a short eBook. The 3rd, full-length book is Written in Stone followed by Love on the Rocks. Then there are two short eBooks: Sneaky's Christmas Mystery and Sneaky's Summer Mystery before the 5th full-length book, No Gravestone Unturned. I have read several of the books in this series and enjoyed them all. I have also read others that this author has written--I do love her writing style no matter the genre.Sneaky, the library cat is an escape artist. How would he ever be able to see his friend Kittykai if he wasn't. Salem the third cat in this book is just visiting but he has a major part to play as the three try to figure out who murdered the body in the graveyard. Sneaky was the only one to have witnessed the murder!!Will they be able to help and let their people know? You will find yourself laughing a bit at their antics! I will be looking forward to reading the books in this series that I missed--and any that come in the future!

I really enjoyed reading No Gravestone Unturned even though it was the first one by Debbie De Louise that I’ve read. As the fifth book in the Cobble Cove Mystery series, I was unfamiliar with the characters and their stories. However, I found the mystery well-plotted with clues that kept me guessing about who the murderer was. Be sure to read the author’s guest post about the role of secrets in mysteries because a big secret is front and center in this mystery.

No Gravestone Unturned has a feel-good, homey element to it. It definitely makes you feel cozy! Alicia and John, along with their two children, bring a lot of that coziness to the story. They’re a very sweet family, and I enjoyed reading about their home life. Yes, Alicia is an overprotective mother, but John balances her out well.

In addition to the main characters, a lot of visitors are in town because of a death in John’s family. It’ll take you a while to keep everyone straight if this is your first Cobble Cove read too. I’m sure I’d have been able to keep up with all of them more easily if I’d already known the regulars. But, you’ll catch on like I did.

I enjoy reading seasonal and holiday-themed cozy mystery books, so reading this Halloween cozy right before Halloween was fun. The party at the library makes me wish life were back to normal, but I guess that’s why we read…to escape from reality! I think you’ll enjoy this fun escape too!

Alicia is a wife and a mother with a penchant for solving murders and this one hits right at home when the body if found by her husband's grandfather's grave. With the help of three silly cats, they work to figure out the murderer and its connection to the past.
This book was very uninteresting to me at first, mostly just following the main character through a normal life with some in-law family coming to town. There was a huge number of characters to keep track off and nothing real interesting going on. It got better when the murder finally happened about a third of the way into the book and the insights from the cats was something different, though they didn't really sound how I imagine cats would but that could just be me. I thought the dialogue was very formal sounding and the scenes didn't always flow smoothly to me.

Cobble Cove is a wonderful and inviting place, albeit a few too many murders. In No Gravestone Unturned, the latest and fifth book in Debbie De Louise's cozy mystery series, we settle in for a spooky Halloween tale, which makes the season feel quite appropriate. Sneaky the cat gets some visitors too, and he even shares some chapters from his own POV.

In the last few books, we've gotten to know John and Alicia's families... the protagonists who hold a few buried secrets and a couple of long-lost relatives. When the sister of the elderly Mac, John's dad, passes away, the entire family comes for a visit. At the same time, someone is murdered at the gravesite of one of their relatives, a man born over a hundred years ago... what secret was buried with him? And what do a few strangers around town have to do with it? Or that supposed ghost popping up in the cemetery on Halloween each year?

De Louise delivers another great book in this series. I read it from cover to cover in one sitting because it captured my attention easily. Among the wonderful autumn setting, the sinister ghostly setting, and the warm-and-immersive upstate New York town are a perfect storyline, memorable characters, and tons of descriptive background settings. I love old mysteries where someone left a secret behind, and we must discover it a century later with carefully sprinkled in clues. Just what happened at that party years ago? Where did all the ancestor's money go? Who is trying to kill now to get hold of it?

Toss in a few chapter-specific conversations between Sneaky and two other new cats to the story (okay, one was around briefly before) and we learn interesting clues from a cat's perspective. Just enough to tease us, offer some red herrings, and eventually lead us down the right path. Each conversation reveals bits and pieces of historical and current information we wouldn't be privy to when following John and Alicia's POVs. I liked this approach - clever writing by the author too.

I was surprised to find out there was another book in this series, but it made my day... now I kinda want another one, but it'll take a bit. Luckily the author writes several other fun short stories and books too.
