Cole: Cupids and Cowboys Book 8 Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 102 ratings

Raised by a stepfather in Knight’s Ferry in the California foothills, once Cole reached adulthood, he found work on a local cattle ranch in the San Joaquin Valley. Now in his mid-twenties and living in a region where men still significantly outnumber women, he doesn’t give much thought to the prospect of marriage and family. Then again, he does not take into account one Lucy Barker who, at seven years of age, feels it is her mission to see her sister, Amelia, married to someone Lucy thinks is handsome and will be a good big brother for her. Amelia Barker, whose father involves himself with local and state politics as much as his cattle ranch, worries she might not have much choice in the man she weds. After already witnessing one of her friends married off as a political pawn, she fears she might suffer the same fate. Contrary to her parent’s wishes, she spends more time on her horse roaming their ranch and the surrounding foothills than she does pursuing “womanly” activities that would please her mother. From afar, she has watched her father’s cowhands work the family spread. One in particular has caught her eye, but she doubts anything can come of her interest in him. Then again, she does not count on her sister, Lucy. Cole Meyer is the stepson of Kendrick Denham, whose story you will find in Kendrick, Book 9 in the Bachelors & Babies series.

Some things you can imagine happening and some you hope will happen and you're on the on the on the edge of your seat and keep reading. I kept thinking about the opening scene of the TV show The Big Valley. All the land and imaging the Barkley Family settling their land and having to have to fight for it all.People do not always have everything handed to them and even if they do someone had to work hard for what they had.

Cole is not one of the Bachelors And Babies. His sister Madeline is. I know it has been a while since we all read Kendrick’s story. I do love a sweet romance.

What could be better than your seven year old sister trying to get you to marry one of the ranch hands? When that man is Cole Meyer, I would say you'd have to agree!

Amelia Barker only wanted to help run her father's ranch. She loved being outside and riding her horse, not dressing up, trying to attract the notice of a man she definately did not want to marry! If her stepmother and father had anything to do with it she'd marry a man fifteen years older. But she felt an attraction to one handsome ranch hand.

Lucy, Amelia's little sister had taken a liking to Cole and wants him to act as her big brother and marry Amelia. Cole would like nothing better, but does he have a chance?

A charming, sweet romance that had me smiling at Lucy and hoping these two would have their happy ending. Oh yes, I loved every minute!

We met Cole in Kendrick, and now he has his own story. There is a lot of railroad history in this book. Good clean romance.

This is a very good story and the eighth book in this series about family and a young woman in love with a ranch hand

The series will be multiple stories by various authors, but each story will read well as a stand-alone. The story is a clean western historical with a touch of history. The story is a spin-off from this author's book, Kendrick, featured in the Bachelor and Babies series. While most of the stories in this series revolve around the baby adopted by the bachelor—this one is different. It is the stepson, Cole Meyers, whose mother, Lydia, married Kendrick Denham. Amelia Barker is the eldest daughter of ranch owner Ed Barker, where Cole works as a cowhand.

Cole Meyer decided early on that he did not want to follow in the occupation of butcher and set out on his own, hired to work for Ed Barker. He hasn’t given much thought to marriage at this point in his life, saving his money, hoping to buy a piece of land and eventually raise a herd of cattle, build a house, and then someday marry.

Amelia Barker enjoys the land, riding horses, working with cattle—which doesn’t sit well with her step-mother, Trudy, who wants to see her acting like a lady and hopefully attracting a man of means for a good marriage. Amelia doesn’t like the city, and most of the city men she has met would not approve of her ways, especially her wit, knowledge, and outspokenness.

This story revolves around historical periods of the railroad and how it would impact many cities within California. Men with money control the railroad industry, and as towns try to get a depot and line in their area, it doesn’t always work out as planned. Areas that the Barker ranch depends on getting cattle and hides to market by river and are hoping that the railroad would come closer to them. (I liked how the author shares historical facts and locations at the end.)

As with the cupid, a young and spontaneous half-sister, Lucy, feels left out as her mama is expecting and her father is busy with politics. Cole always seems to listen and talk to Lucy when she comes visiting; he has been deemed her honorary big brother. When a circus and independence day celebration is in a nearby town, Ed will grant Lucy and Amelia permission to attend if Cole escorts them.

The story has the good and the bad. While Amelia knows her heart and what she wants, her step-mother and father are making plans for her future with a man she doesn’t like. Cole has his eyes on Amelia, but what does he have to offer a woman like her? It will be years before he can buy land, build up a herd, build a house, and even that may not be enough. But then you throw in a little matchmaker, and things seem to happen. Will love find a way? There is nothing like honest conversations to open up and share the truth.

“You’re right. As long as we’re together, we’ll make it work.”

The author has penned a sweet, heartwarming and fun story full of very interesting historical information especially regarding the preconceived ideas of what a woman should do and what her wearing apparel should be during the time period of the book. This is Amelia Baker and Cole Meyer's story. We first met Cole when he was adopted by Kendrick Denham in the story of Kendrick, Book #9 of the Bachelors and Babies series. Cole is all grown up now. Amelia's father is a rancher/political figure of important standing in the area and has a groom all picked out for Amelia. Amelia is not happy about the choice and prefers to ride her horse and learn about ranching both of which are looked down on for women during this time period. Thus enters matchmaker Lucy, Amelia's precocious seven year old sister, who knows just who her sister needs to fall in love with. Will Lucy be successful and will Amelia and Cole form a relationship and eventually reach a HEA. Be sure to read this wonderful page turning story to find out. I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.

The first chapter of this book felt a little overwhelming trying to visualize all the places listed, but as the story continues, the reader gets a fuller picture of the areas described.
Even though Cole, a cowboy earning his keep on a prosperous ranch, and the rancher’s daughter, Amelia, pushed to marry up in the world, are the main characters, Amelia’s little sister Lucy shines through. I love Lucy’s vivacious, energetic, and nosy character. Lucy really keeps the story going and everyone on their toes!
Family connections with step parents and siblings are very much a part of this story.
There is a lot of history about California and the railroad.
Not much has changed as political figures, politics, and progress aren’t always above board and honest.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. My options are my own.

I enjoyed Kendrick story very much there was so many wonderful characters its was full package so I had higher expection with this book, but I am very disappointed because I forced my self to finish this book it's didn't hold my interest there's too much about the railroads stuff which I didn't understand or care about. There was almost zero interaction between the main character not even a single character held any attention. It's a very well written though just not for me. I would recommend it

I wasn't as taken with this sequel as I expected. Too much politics and history lesson. Not enough romance and conflict. I skimmed a lot of it so didn't really get much out of it.
