But as her work unfolds, Meghan's horrified at the brutal and unethical practices the Kazzies are subjected to.

And most surprisingly, she falls in love with one.

Faced with growing conflict over helping the Kazzies versus following the Compound's strict policies, Meghan must choose: obey the government's unethical practices or risk everything to save the only man she's ever loved.

    4.5 stars, actually.

Meghan lives in a post-Makanza virus ravaged Midwest United States. She's lost alot along with most of the world to the virus that took out a huge percentage of the population and changed the few survivors to something other than entirely human. Now's a woman with a mission-- get a job at one of the Compounds that studies the survivors--the Kazzies-- and find a vaccine. But what she finds at the Compound may change her view of Makanza, and herself, forever.

So there are two things that Krista Street does really well-- one is the compelling, slightly naive, super-well meaning but anxious narrator voice. Meghan draws you in right away and takes you along with her on her first day at her new job. She's so relatable and so easy to root for.

The other thing is the science. There's nothing better than science fiction with great characters that sneakily teaches you a bit about the world you live in. Here there is some great ideas about how viruses might affect the U.S., infection vectors, government response, vaccine creation, and different virus strains. Very cool stuff.

And then there's the central romantic relationship in the book...which after writing that sentence I realized is actually more of a central emotional relationship between Meghan and the mother of the Kazzie she is involved with just as much as the Kazzie himself. Never read a romance story where the courtship begins with tea and photos with the mom! But it totally works. And there's all that juicy "can't touch him through my bio containment suit" angst that Street milks really well. And the answer to the central scientific problem of how to obtain a dna sample from the Kazzies that didn't degrade totally made me smile. So elegant, so lovely.

There's just a few little nitpicky things that brought it down half a star for me that most likely wouldn't bother other people. There's a couple times where one character says something and then a different character says almost the same thing soon after. I was also a bit-- and this is entirely on me, folks, and not probably reflective of the story, and who am i to say anything anyway because I am whitey white European mutt-- uncomfortable sometimes of the images Meghan associated with her Kazzie because of his partial First Peoples ancestry.

Regardless of the nits I picked, Meghan's got me hooked. I'm going to have to find out what happens to the Kazzies now that there's an actual possibilty of a vaccine.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The pacing was brisk enough, and I liked the premise of the young researcher looking for a cure for a deadly virus in the compound. While the “Kazzies” (survivors of the virus imprisoned in the compound) did give me XMen vibes, I wasn’t put off by it.

However, I could have done without the love story enveloped in the plot. I don’t think a romance was necessary to keep things moving, and I always find it distracting and rather eye rolling when one is inserted.

All in all, it was a quick read, and I appreciate that it didn’t end with a cliffhanger.

This book was so hard for me to read because I want to protect people especially children. I also am a fixer and I felt helpless to fix their situation and I had to walk away a few times breath, calm down and then I could continue reading. The challenging read towards the end was worth it but we shall see what happens in the next book. Stay tuned....

Absolutely loved this book! This was my first book of the author’s and I read it all in one siting. I could not put this book down! In a world where we have a lot of YA dystopian/science fiction books this one stood out!
Not only is Meghan, the heroine, so relatable as a character but she she is resilient. What I loved most about her is that she loves fiercely and will do anything to help others. She is purely selfless.
And I love Davin. He has been through so much and remains strong. Shows what a great character he is and how strong he is. No matter what happens he protects those he loves.

Highly recommend this book for those who love a slow burn and budding friendship (future relationship?), a great story and very engaging.

I didn’t expect this book to hit me like it did. I found myself worrying for the characters affected with a virus that changes more than just a routine for a few days. And I fell myself falling in love with Davin. His broody temper yet his gentle touch was just what I needed. My heart broke for him and the e other kazzies as they suffered at the hands of the government.

I hoped this would be a decent series but wasn't sure it would be my cup of tea and boy was I wrong! I LOVED THE BOOK!!! Couldn't put it down. The story starts so in book 0 so tragically and I admit I cried a few times. Make sure you get that one first. I was caught up with the Kinder familys heartbraking stuggle in the first few chapters just that quick. As it progress in this book and you meet Davin at the lab 6 yrs later its again a roller coaster of emotions. I can't wait to see what happens next. Another all night reading session for me tonight!

I loved this story it was so different and engaging. A young researcher trying to find a cure. I like how the characters interacted with each other. I feel it helped the story along without feeling rushed. Meghan is a very down to earth and believeable character. There is a little bit of a love story. However, there is plenty of suspense to keep you on your toes.

Young adult dystopian. It was interesting, but I could not love it due to some incredible plot points. It was never clear what PhDs the young heroine had, nor in what way she used her training in her job. Also, several times in the book it was stated that if a vaccine were developed for the virus, then the afflicted would be cured and/or able to be released into the general population. I'm no scientist, but I know that that is not how vaccines work. Those already infected would still be infected. The vaccine would potentially help only the healthy people. I don't think I'm interested enough to continue the series.

The idea drew me in,and at first I was really emerged into the new world. It was very believable. I could picture the world well. I am not sure what it was but I couldn’t connect with Meghan. This was more because of her personality than anything else and personal preference. I like strong women, and she is very vulnerable and shy. I just couldn’t quite engage with this style of personality, but I know many people will resonate and will love her.
    Spoiler alert
Davin was great, but I wanted more from them both. I wanted tension. I also found all her risks seemed quite mundane, maybe I was expecting a death scene, and action. I wanted her to risk getting the virus, getting exposed or something just to increase the drama.

Apart from that,I generally really enjoyed this book, and read and listened on audio, and made some of my long work drives extremely enjoyable.

This is definitely for people liking a timid MC who finds confidence and strength, within a really interesting world, that is so believable it is actually quite scary.
