- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2020Caveat : I got a Patreon Copy of this book, pre-release and paid full price again after release.
A great start to a new series, for the sci-fi tragics it puts me in mind of the Rogue Squadron series of books from the old Starwars EU. For those of you less likely to remember who Wedge Antilles is let alone his birthday, think of this novel as a sort of A team in space with space fighter planes.
To keep that A Team analogy rolling the main character literally is on the run from her own government and assasians from the enemy she faced in the last war. When she makes it to planet on the rim of explored space she sets up a mercernary team to keep what remains of her old unit in beers and coffee cake, and gets tumbled into the politics of the world she now calls home.
The positive
This is a great Mil-SciFi from an author who has really begun to hit their stride. The effort to be inclusive of cultures and sexual / gender identies is welcome, and contrary to other reviews here, i as a Straight White Catholic raised Male did not find the inclusivity to be offensive. The action is fast paced and kinetic, the description is good and the author takes great strides to hide exposition in the narative. No "As you know bob... " here.
The Negative
Not alot new here. Space fighters and evil conspiracies abound, but it is very well written. Main character is a little Mary Sue, but this is typical of genre, i never had a moment where i thought, bah and put the book down.
Recommendation
Value - A steal at the price and would have paid more for the book than i did.
Re-Readability - High, ill re-read this when the sequel hits.
Would I recommend It - Yes, A great story from a good Mil Sci Fi author hitting their stride.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2021I've reviewed a few books by Glynn Stewart. However, I went back to look at my reviews and noticed that while I tend to praise the story ideas, I have often complained about the characters. Here in the Scattered Stars series once again Glynn's style and expansive plot does diminish the characters slightly. Honestly other than Kira none of the many characters gets any real in depth exposition or development. They are mostly fully developed in their first scene and afterwards serve as part of the overall story.
But that story is much better than many I've read recently. Kira is a former member of an elite space interceptor squadron that saw their side surrender at the end of a brutal war only to then have assassins from the victorious side try to kill off the entire fighter group she belonged to. She flees the system with six new interceptors and a message to travel to Redward and meet with an old friend of her fighter group commander.
Well, that gets her into an old mercenary group as the commander of a small fighter squadron along with 5 other pilots who manage to escape the assassins and join her far from their home.
Its a fairly different tale although once she's on Conviction and starting to learn the differences between being a mercenary pilot and being a squadron pilot in an official state military a new twist is sprung that turns the entire tale into a full space opera with shadowy villains and increasingly higher stakes.
But this is a very good tale. I could and do quibble about some of hte plot choices, but none felt like what I like to call Deus ex Author, where the author pushed the plot in a particular direction for "reasons". Instead, the created region of space and the peoples inhabiting it make fairly logical decisions based on what they know (as a reader you feel like you know more.) It turns into an interesting tale.
I haven't and probably never will read all of Glynn's work as some of the descriptions don't excite me, but I am glad to have tried out this series. 4 star.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2020I received an advance review copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
And once again I am buying the book even though I got it for free first!
I've yet to read a book by Glynn that wasn't at least entertaining and often his books are the kind that encourage and uplift.
This book is less on the humorous side than usual for Glynn, I would say. There are still some funny moments, though, and the book itself feels lighter than it could if you consider what happens in it...you should read the book instead of my review so you know what I'm talking about!
I love the main character and the fact that she's not just another ship captain - in fact she's not in charge of anything at all except her group of pilots. She makes good decisions and seems to have a good heart. I like that she comes across as both good at her job and human.
I also enjoy all of the secondary characters in this book. Normally I end up disliking one or two but I think Glynn was able to flesh them all out as needed, no character sticks out as just a plot device, etc.
Why are you still reading my review?!?! Download this book now! :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2020New series, new universe, new mechanics, new civilization, new tech, and new characters!
This has all the intense action and plot twists and tensions that I've grown to love ... even if I still somehow don't truly expect them.
I will say that only one book in and it looks like the big puppeteer has been named ... and frankly, I'm not sure what I'd do if I was facing that opponent. If I was sure they were in the wrong ... I'm not sure if I would find the strength to take the hero's path against an evil that powerful and that plans their actions that carefully.
I suspect I will learn something truly useful by reading this series. And I expect to truly enjoy it.
I would normally tell you that I got a free electronic review copy in exchange for my honest review ... but I actually signed up on Patreon to pay (more) for that advanced copy. Then I just bought another copy on Kindle (cheaper and the only source now) so I would have it later ... and could tell you about how much I like it.
I liked it enough to buy it twice. I'm looking forward to the next installment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book :-)
Conviction is the latest novel from Glynn Stewart and begins a new story in a new universe. This is a good solid military space opera centred around a group of fighter pilots as they find a place for themselves after their betrayal by their home world. The story is a great introduction to the universe and central characters with some exciting action and hints of the central story thread. As always, I think the writing delivers a good balance between the pace and depth of the story which keeps me interested in the characters and their fate. The book did not disappoint and I would certainly recommend.
Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah, i love it. I recommend his book...
At the begining i already knew that i will love this series. I am looking forward to book 2. When i see the pre order i will surely buy it. Anyways i am hoping to see an expanded Conviction with more firepower and innovation and able to be the badest carrier in the sector, maybe a couple of escort ships too. Like a frigate or two, maybe. Thank you and more please.

There's only one problem: I need a new book from Glynn Stewart every week.
Smooth writing and original situations with lots of action.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delivers the expected Glynn Stewart experience
If you have read previous books by the author and liked them, you will not be disappointed. If you do not like starfighters, action packed science fiction, people getting referred to by their preferred pronouns, or look for high brow literature, this may not be for you. I find that he's one author where I consistently enjoy (almost) all his books and look forward to reading them after a long day in the office.
