Cowboy Fever Series, Book 6: Drifter's Heart (Cowboy Fever Contemporary Romance 2) Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

Return to cowboy country in Fever, Texas, where the heat isn't the only thing causing a fever! See if you can find the heirloom wedding band in each story!

Easy to love, hard to hold...

Maggie May's pa is still looking for the cowboy who knocked up his cowgirl vixen daughter five years ago. Little Tex has grown up without a father, but he's the shining star of the May Ranch. Like his father, though, he's always running off and disappearing.

Just when Maggie May thinks it'll never happen, the drifter she loves shows up, suddenly wise to the fact that his oh-so-altruistic efforts to quiet her endless stream of conversation had ended with a child. Horse trainer for hire and former rodeo bullfighter, Ryder McCall returns to Fever, Texas. This time, Maggie May plans to get him back in her clutches--and win his heart forever.

Editorial Reviews

Review

5+ Heartfelt, Tender, Broken Promises, Life Changing, Second Chance at Life Stars! "DRIFTER'S HEART will steal your heart! I must admit that, out of all the characters in the Cowboy Fever Series, Maggie May was my least favorite until I read DRIFTER'S HEART. Now it has surpassed The Only One, which had that place won hands down! This is a complicated, well-rounded story filled with an expanse of subjects that will touch everyone's hearts. It takes a very special person and writer to imbibe the sensitivity and expertise to rip at their reader's soul and make them feel every bit of the sorrowful pain their characters are enduring. Ms. Wiesner has accomplished such a coveted gift, and she shares with her readers in this emotional ride of a lifetime. Ryder McCall was a drifter, the son of the famous Reece McCall and had a half-sister, Lavender. Ryder was a good looking man whose mystique grabs at the reader's heart. He was a loner at heart, didn't have attachments anywhere he roamed, and never stayed too long in one place. Fever, Texas was the only place that felt like home to him. Maggie May never fell hard until Ryder McCall entered her life. Eventually, Maggie wore Ryder down. The next morning Maggie was alone and devastated beyond words. As time went by, she realized she was pregnant and, being the proud woman that she was, she took on the responsibility of her son, Little Tex, on her own. I began to love this character and all she stood for. She loved her son endlessly and became a wonderful mother who grew up fast. This novel takes the reader 5 years later, when Ryder returns to Fever, to work at his friend Mac's ranch, after a life-altering accident in the bull ring that almost kills him. He is expected not to walk again but survives with tremendous pain, rehab, and a bad limp. This wonderful segment takes the reader through the day-to-day grueling life of Maggie and her pain and anguish, the sleepless nights soothing her son from his night terrors, and the torment that has become her life without the man she loves. Maggie will not settle for anything less than it all, and she is determined to have it. Don't miss out on this wonderful series, the compassion and overwhelming heartache, the tears that will stream down your face before you realize they are there, that only a special writer like Ms. Wiesner can make you feel. DRIFTER'S HEART takes on a life of its own with Maggie and Ryder meeting again, the realization that he has a son with a disability that he's had to endure his entire life, the regrets and hopes that he can be a better man and father than his dad ever was for him or Lavender. This novel takes you through the conflict and turmoil of a drifter who's always only known one way of life but wants to change, keep promises, have a real family, and just doesn't know if he has it in him. Sparks fly, love scenes are great, threats are made, and twists and turns are around every corner, and then fate steps in. Every aspect of the story makes for a wonderful, well-rounded, all-encompassing, heart-wrenching story that will warm the reader's heart. If you haven't read this, it is a must on your TBR! Get your tissues ready for this all-encompassing tear jerker." ~A Bookish Escape

"Despite her "bad girl" reputation, Maggie May was secretly a virgin until she set her sights on drifter Ryder McCall. Horse trainer and rodeo bull-rider, Ryder had promised to stay away from his employer's delectable daughter, but fate, and Maggie, had other plans. A sudden summer storm washed out her surprise picnic but the shelter of a deserted cabin and a stolen kiss inspired a night of passion. Ashamed of himself for betraying his boss and taking advantage of Maggie, Ryder hightailed it out of town, not knowing that he left Maggie both heartbroken and pregnant. Five years have passed and Maggie's son, Tex, is the joy of her life. But the bright, charming boy has a reckless streak just like his father's, and his perpetual-motion mischief may be the first signs of a serious attention deficit. When Ryder reappears in town, Maggie has no choice but to confront him, because the secret to her son's future may lie in his father's past. Readers familiar with Karen Wiesner's world will love this version of the "secret baby" story. Fever, Texas, is a wonderful place, and the townspeople and ranchers who populate Ms. Wiesner's Cowboy Fever Series are so real, even the most detached reader will find herself desperately turning the pages to see how the folks of Fever confront and solve very modern problems while still staying true to their old time western values, values like chastity, loyalty and honor. I admit to being a fan of all the books in the Cowboy Fever Series--the books are chock full of sexy cowboys; what's not to love?--but DRIFTER'S HEART is special. The reason: a four year old, whirling dervish named Tex. Maggie and Ryder's love story is passionate and heartwarming. A reader can't help but worry as they struggle to overcome the mistakes of their past and cheer as they strive to rise above them to build a life together for themselves and their son. The stronger, deeper and even more moving love in DRIFTER'S HEART, though, is Maggie's love for Tex. Ms. Wiesner draws an exquisite portrait of a child with ADHD and the heartbreaking decisions Maggie faces mirror those of all parents who discover the child they love literally can't sit still. Please don't miss DRIFTER'S HEART. Buy the book for the wonderful romance between Maggie May and her sexy cowboy. Keep it for Tex." ~Award-winning author Carrie S. Masek

4 Stars! "This sixth book in the Cowboy Fever Series will definitely satisfy readers' expectations. Wiesner successfully blends current and relevant real-life issues with hot romance in this very pleasant story about two lovers who manage to find their way back to one another. Fans of the series will continue to enjoy the light and comforting down-home country tone and setting of Fever, Texas." ~RT Book Reviews rtbookreviews.com

"Karen Wiesner brings us a realistic love story with contemporary problems set in rural Texas. The story centers on Maggie and Ryder, two people with a passion for each other but very different lives. The author paints the relationship well, including details of Maggie and Ryder's son's issues with ADHD. The subject matter is unusual for a romance novel which only adds to the book's allure. In a genre full of military, paranormal and historical subjects, it's a pleasure to read a story that could easily be someone I know, ordinary and real. Supporting characters add much to the tale as does the Texas scenery. If you like real-life love stories, DRIFTER'S HEART is a lovely book and completely worth your time." ~BTSemag btsemag.com

4 Stars! "Maggie May is a beautiful cowgirl that no man in Fever, Texas can resist until she stumbles upon the sexy Ryder McCall with his sideways grin and Sam Elliot drawl. Ryder comes from a family of bull riders, which makes him an unacceptable match for Maggie, according to her father who warns him away. A summer spent rebuffing Maggie's sexual overtures culminates in one night of fiery passion that leaves Maggie heartbroken and pregnant. Karen Wiesner does a spectacular job of providing tons of backstory for DRIFTER'S HEART without revealing it all upfront. We learn tiny morsels about their history as their relationship changes and their story progresses. When a chance offer finds Ryder back in Fever, Maggie must decide if he will remain firmly in her past or if there is room for him in her and Tex's life. Karen Wiesner has done it again, providing another exceptional piece of storytelling in my new favorite small town of Fever, Texas. Fever is filled with sexy cowboys, small town goodwill, and protective men--does it get any better than that? DRIFTER'S HEART allows us the privilege of watching Maggie become a strong woman unwilling to settle for less than she deserves and dreams of, while Ryder struggles against his impulse to live his life for others. It is a joy to go along for the bumpy ride through this ranching town and meet the colorful characters found within. Young Tex, the result of Maggie and Ryder's night of passion, is adorable, precocious and struggling with his own problems, while Mac and Amanda (from Book 1) eagerly await the arrival of twins. Nothing is missing from DRIFTER'S HEART; it is packed full of emotions, drama, horses, meddling family members, and reliable friends. The only thing missing is a cowboy for me!" ~Natasha Jackson for Readers' Favorite readersfavorite.com

Set in Fever, Texas. Four years ago Maggie May was a vixen, flirting with just about every guy she came across. That included a drifter named Ryder McCall. The difference is that with Ryder, Maggie was in love and she gave her virginity to him. He disappeared immediately. But now Ryder is back. The horse trainer is no longer a rodeo bullfighter due to a serious injury that left him with a limp. Ryder has accepted a job as the foreman of the Mackenzie Ranch.

Maggie has a four-year-old son, Tex. She can barely make ends meet but has never regretted a moment of being a mother. The doctor believes Tex has ADHD; however, he wants to wait until Tex begins school before doing anything on the off chance that the child is just super hyper. Maggie agrees, yet worries. She needs to know Ryder's medical history, so she goes to see him on the ranch.

Ryder has no doubts that Tex is his son and he shares Tex's symptoms; however, Ryder is undiagnosed. (Ryder has not had the best home life.) He wants to help Maggie with Tex monetarily and, after awhile, finally gets Maggie to accept it. He also wants to be in Maggie and Tex's lives. Problem is that Ryder knows he is flighty. He often cannot keep the promises he makes. Therefore, Ryder refuses to fully commit to being in their future.

**** FOUR STARS! Karen Wiesner has created a wonderful town filled with all sorts of characters that I have come to love. The locals do not hesitate to help each other. Maggie and Tex are surrounded by people who care for them, even though Maggie never divulged the name of Tex's father. On the flip side, Maggie may be flat broke and have little to her name, but she is still quick to help others. Who could not fall in love with such a town? The characters have well developed backgrounds and I could easily envision the difficulties they faced.

This story is full of love, romance, understanding ,and some life struggles. Wiesner writes with a compassion that pulls at the heart strings. You will not want to leave Fever, Texas. ****
