Craving You: Age Gap, Blackmailed into Marriage MM Romance (Dread+Terrible) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 306 ratings

A former thief set on revenge. A younger man cut off by his wealthy family. This marriage is in name only.

Kannon Jeffers knows a thing or two about regret. Cut off from his powerful and influential family, he’s betrayed the last person he’d ever want to hurt. Now he’s alone, doing things he never thought he would for money. Focused on getting back into his family’s good graces, he doesn’t have time for anything else.

Until an enigmatic stranger blackmails him into marriage.

Preacher has been biding his time to carry out a death-bed promise. One look at Kannon and his plans shift into overdrive. Blackmailing him is easy enough, but living with Kannon, keeping secrets from him, is harder. Because despite the unflappable front he projects, Preacher has been craving his husband from the second their eyes met.

A former criminal and a spoiled rich kid shouldn’t have anything in common, but they do. A marriage neither man wanted morphs into something more as they find themselves helpless against the heat between them. It could all be real, if only Preacher can lay his past to rest without destroying himself and Kannon in the process.

Craving You is the second book in the Dread+Terrible series but can be read as a standalone. It’s light on angst, heavy on heat, and features an MC who loves makeup and feminine clothes, age-gap romance, enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, and sexy times in an elevator. Also, there are some naughty moments with high heels. As with any of Avril’s books, there is no cheating and you can always expect a Happily Ever After.

A Grenadian transplant, Avril now lives in Tucker, GA, with a madly tolerant husband. Together they raise an eccentric daughter who’s pretty meh about reading and school. Avril’s earliest memories of reading revolve around discussing the plot points of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys with an equally book-minded mother.

Always in love with the written word, Avril finally decided to do the writing in August of ’09 and never looked back. She’s been nominated for numerous awards, including Best Author, Best series (Brooklyn Sinners), and Favorite All-Time Author. In 2013 Avril won Evernight Publishing’s Reader’s Choice Award for the LGBT (Male/Male) category. Recently she took home the Golden Ankh award for best Male/Male romance for her bestselling novel, Sinner’s Fall.

Addicted to cake, the ID Channel, and the UFC, Avril writes Gay and Erotic Romance with happy endings; she remains a believer of love in all its forms.

This was another Avril novel I enjoyed reading and would recommend if you’ve enjoyed other dark tales by this author. The tone of this entry was a little lighter than others I’ve read by Avril, though, especially the Staniel Duet or the previous entry in this series, Remember Me. I think that has a lot to do with how bubbly Kannan can be at times and how the boys treat Preacher. Everyone seems to be pointedly trying to raise Preacher’s mood unless they’re on the wrong side of his ire at the time.

This plot is a good lesson about the repercussions of a vengeful goal, particularly when bolstered by stubbornness. Preacher is a pragmatic person that has been fundamentally scarred many times over many years and is using that pain to fuel a single-minded plot. In service to that plot, he involves Kannan - another victim of not only Preacher’s vengeance but the same perpetrator the vengeance targets. As the two leads learn more about each other, both are forced to broaden their worldview and recalibrate their sense of self. Their chemistry feels both authentic to their personalities and their specific dynamic with each other. Experiencing each lead’s revelations about themselves and each other, both sexual and emotional, really deepens the impact of the overall plot. The specifics of their physical chemistry are somehow unexpected but authentic to them and always explosive.

Their interactions with some of the supporting characters felt off at times - specifically Preacher with the boys/his found family. We are told he has a specific function to their dynamic - a de facto leader and someone only supplying support but not often receiving it, but their interactions often contradict that assertion. Comparing how Bishop saw their found family ( and even Preacher specifically within that) back in Remember Me versus similar scenes of Preacher interacting and referring to that same group - I was left feeling that Preacher actually misunderstands how they perceive him/his place in the group whereas Bishop’s interpretations seemed spot on. Kanan doesn’t spend a lot of time around the group for much of the plot, but he seemed to read the dynamic closer to my interpretation than Preacher’s.

I will say that many of the more involved supporting characters left me curious about their expanded narratives which is both a blessing and a curse. The ones that are published are scattered across many series and/or applications/programs/etc. or aren’t published at all that I could find. Specifically, there’s a nascent romance involving an explicitly non-binary character hinted at near the conclusion and my enby/nobi self wants to read that representational romance!

I read Craving You because I had an add for it pop up on my Facebook page. I am so glad that it did! I am now and forever an Avril Ashton fan! I loved Kannon with my whole heart. I wish that he was real and that he was my bestie. His style, attitude and refusal to be anyone but himself made me love him. He and Preacher were sweet, smoking hot in bed, and had such genuine moments. I am beyond glad that they got an HEA together. I had every emotion known to man while reading this book. It has made me now have to read her other books. Keep writing Avril!

This story was poetic, beautiful, and powerful. I loved every character that was in it. Even the "bad" ones were written sharply and with dimension. Watching Kannon and Preacher fall in love was fantastic. They were each such fun characters to read and how they complimented each other was a huge draw for me. The easy back and forth between them, sexually and emotionally. Yum.

This is my first book by this author and I wasn't sure how I'd like it. I read all the amazing reviews but was still unsure. Thank goodness I took the plunge. Such beautiful storytelling. I am definitely reading more from this author! Already have a few in my TBR pile.

Avril Ashton brings us stories and characters you can't find anywhere else. This book, like Remember Me, starts off with a couple of men who seem on the edge of being intolerable humans for their excesses and self-centered behavior, and then she gradually peels it all back and shows you their vulnerable, loveable humanity until you adore them and can't wait to see them learn to love each other. She's bringing us action, suspense, and plenty of hilarious dialogue between her smart, fascinating characters. Plus there's all the scorching hot sex, which is also creative as hell and nothing like any romance I've read before!

These were great characters! It's a messed up kind of relationship, but that's what makes this book so good. You feel for both Kannon and Preacher, want to help them both and crave that happy ending. How hot the sex scenes are make it even better.
    I definitely recommend.

First of all, this needs to be listed as erotica. At least forty percent is sex. It’s emotional and moves the story along, so it’s hard to skim past. It was a little bit over the top. So be prepared, because it is graphic.

The characters were engaging and I absolutely loved Kannon. He was deep and more intriguing than I’d first thought he would be. The characters did change rather quickly. Most often in life it takes more than a few weeks to become a whole new you, but fiction is fiction and it’s typical of romance.

The relationship between all the men is kinda hard to embrace. I get where the author is coming from, but it never failed to be weird for me. Even siblings aren’t that close, especially the decades of sex. That would be eew. But that could just be me.

The random inclusion of gangster lingo never failed to catch me off guard. I appreciate there wasn’t more though. They’re adults and 99% of the time spoke like it. So that’s why it was a shock when it slipped in and out. Again, that could just be me. But I did enjoy the story and finished it in two days. In my opinion it’s better than the first. Since I’d been disappointed with that one, it had taken me two tries for this one. I’m glad I did it.

Loved this book and the chemistry between Preacher and Kannon was off the charts hot 💥💥. The best laid plans can be sidetracked by love. Preacher's personality was stern, focused, and determined. Kannon, was flighty, living off the family's money, dressed in feminine clothes, and was all over the place. These two seemed so opposite but love can make opposites become one. I loved this story and want more Preacher and Kannon.

I loved this story more than the other 2 in the series. Preacher was a good alpha but had a good vulnerable side and I loved how the author made Kannon both fierce and vulnerable. Avril Ashton books are great. Looking forward to reading the stories about the others.

I have loved Preacher since we first met him in a previous book. How he cares for everyone around him. Then Kannon appears and what a perfect match. I love all Ms Ashton’s books but the Dread and Terrible books are the series I’ve anticipated most and so far they are everything. I highly recommend.

1.0 out of 5 stars Well that was disappointing...
Reviewed in Germany on August 26, 2024
Call the coroner is one of my all-time favorite books, so I had high hopes for this one but it was such a disappointment. The MC's are both whiny, annoying and selfish. Kannon is such an entitled brat, hating on his family for having him take responsibility for ONCE in his pampered life. I was fuming by page 65. I didn't have as big of a problem with Preacher but this whole "love-crew" thing they have going on left "cute" behind miles ago and went straight to sad, embrassing, annoying and unhealthy. So in conclusion, just... No thanks.

I have no words to explain how much I LOVED this book. Avril is well known for some heavy angsty book and it was a bliss to read one that is quite the opposite. Kan & Preach are sweet, fun, adorable and hot as hell together. This one gave me all the feels, and will definitely go to the reread pile.
