The Case of the Crystal Kisses (Caster & Fleet Mysteries Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 247 ratings

Who would miss a Crystal Kiss?

When Katherine and Connie receive a note from Mr Maynard at the Department, his request seems easy. After all, how hard can it be to investigate confectionery? But Crystal Kisses are everywhere, and frighteningly addictive.

How have the sweets become so popular? And why are so many being given away? Connie and Katherine travel across London, where they see the power of the sweets for themselves, and before too long find themselves back in the music hall, where they make some disturbing connections...

The duo’s investigations indicate everything is above board — almost too reputable — and all their enquiries result in dead ends. But someone knows they’re on the case, and will stop at nothing to make them abandon it. An easy case becomes a nightmare of disapproval, stress, and shame — yet the duo feel they must fight on.

Will Katherine and Connie dare to risk their reputations, and even their happiness, to find out what lies behind the Crystal Kisses?

The Case of the Crystal Kisses is the sixth book in the Caster & Fleet mystery series, set in 1890s London.

Liz Hedgecock grew up in London, England, did an English degree, and then took forever to start writing. After several years working in the National Health Service, some short stories crept into the world. A few even won prizes. Then the stories started to grow longer...

Now Liz travels between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, murdering people. To be fair, she does usually clean up after herself.

Liz’s reimaginings of Sherlock Holmes, her Pippa Parker cozy mystery series, and the Caster & Fleet Victorian mystery series (with Paula Harmon) are available in ebook and paperback.

Liz lives in Cheshire with her husband and two sons, and when she’s not writing or child-wrangling you can usually find her reading, messing about on Twitter, or cooing over stuff in museums and art galleries. That's her story, anyway, and she's sticking to it.

Caster & Fleet are two of the most delightful detectives I've met on the pages of a book in a very long time. In a time when women wore long skirts and put their long hair up to hold outrageous hats, these two women, meet, discover her compliment in detecting to delve into unique situations. We are also able to follow them into their homes and private lives. I was sorry to see this series end. But these books are on the "to be enjoyed again" shelf.

Mr. Maynard contacts the agency of Caster and Fleet to look into an addictive candy that is literally taking the country by storm.
From kids as young as three years old, up to adults in their mid thirties, and some older ones.
Katherine and Connie once again turn to their friends at the theater.
And that's where they find their first and best clues.

I have enjoyed the stories of these two young ladies, and their growth from an accidental meeting in a diner, to becoming best friends. and eventually sister-in-laws during the course of the six books.

They are all standalone books, but should be read in order to keep the timelines straight.
But, you will not miss anything from one story to the other.

Authors Paula Harmon and Liz Hedgecock creates believable characters and realistic situations.
The first book, The Case of the Black Tulips was a nice introduction to the characters.
It was also the weakest of the series, but layed a good foundation for the ones following.

These stories were based in the late 1800s making them a good Historical Mystery series.

I look forward to the next installment... hopefully soon.

Not your run of the mill mystery. The book is well-written with interesting characters. It’s helpful to have read other books by the author for more family background.

I have to say, I did not like this one as much as the rest of the series. It's fun to enjoy the main characters, but the plot is growing stale. I gave it a 4 though, because I persevered till the end, and the ending is an absolute hoot! I still would like to have another story of Caster and Fleet, maybe of their children growing up?

I enjoyed the four ptevious books in the series but this one veered from hatd to swalow to deliberate lunacy. The main charactets, Katherine and Connie spend 90% of their time moping about not being able to tuck their kids en route to some bizarre antics. Would anyone in their right minds thinkthe best way to catch a drug pusher was to wear a fright wig and sing derogatory songs? And don't get me started on the ridiculous motive for the villians vile acts.
I will say the other books in the series featured likable charactets and plots that were not allucinatory like this books. My star rating is perhaps overly generous because 'wrap up a few personal details about the characters I enjoyed. It's a shame the final book in the series left London for Crazy Town!

I've really enjoyed this series. So much do that I binge read them! Of course now I'm sad, because there aren't anymore. Great plots and interesting and believable characters.

Such fun, but with enough authenticity in the details to be satisfying! Oh to have four postal deliveries a day and telegrams that arrive across London in 20 minutes! Don't want the corsets back, though... Highly recommend all six books for light-hearted mystery-solving with friendship and strong, complex women at the centre. Read these!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great romp!

I bought the five previous books a couple of months ago and read them all in a week. This one dropped onto my Kindle in the morning and I finished it by the time I went to bed. The actual mystery seems a little far fetched but no more than many mysteries written at the time it is set. The enjoyment comes from the interaction between the characters and the two authors' voices. I'm sorry that this is the final book in the series, for now anyway, and hope that the authors find time to collborate on a further series in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet mystery.

Katherine and Connie are called upon once again - but this time it's all a big secret cloak and dagger request. Turns out Crystal Kisses are sweets. As with the other books in series, the setting of late 1800s London for two female protagonists is brilliant. I have enjoyed the character development, life has moved on for the two, as with the supporting characters. There are hints within the story that the detective agency will cease business because of family commitments - but then there are hints that things will have to continue. A brilliant conclusion to the mystery in hand.

Loved the characters and the story lines. Imaginatively set in an accurate period setting and well edited. A joy to read, real escapism.
