Two soldiers faced with the past. One man struggles with a tragic secret while the other one demands answers. What’s even worse? When Maddox deploys on a mission and River takes on the kidnappers, time is running out for one of them. The only thing for certain is they’re definitely cutting it close for any chance at a happy ending.

In typical Reese Knightley style, Cutting It Close is a fast paced, slow burn, action & adventure romance with a big cast of characters and a definite HEA. This book is the first in a series, but can be enjoyed as a standalone.

    So Maddox’s father threatens to kill River so Maddox sends him away. The next day his father dies so threat over but Maddox never tells River the truth now it’s eight years later and he still refuses to tell him why he sent him away he’d rather let him be hurt. Yeah he’s dealing with the aftermath of a lifetime of abuse but you send away the person you love for eight long years. It makes no sense this storyline is a stretch to believe. Also, and this is kind of a dumb thing to be annoyed with but I’ve read a lot of the books in these series and why is it every meal in every book is chili and cornbread? Must be a big favorite for this author because it’s in almost every book, lol.

    Reese Knightley is a new author for me I'm so happy I found. I loved the military type of stories by Annabella Stone and was looking for something similar. I couldn't have made a better choice. At first I wasn't sure, I was afraid this story would be more"cowboy" than " military", but it turned out to have plenty military action, strong world building, great characters and I loved the story line and how all series are connected.

The eight books are standalones but I recommend you start with book one and go from there. The main characters are sprinkled through all eight books making the series read line one large novel.     I enjoyed this story. All the elements - action, love, danger, team camaraderie and loyalty - come together. The various special forces teams are still a bit confusing, but that fades into the background. In this book, Maddox and River are separated, and this loss haunts both. It takes Triton’s kidnapping at the family ranch to bring them back into contact. A later mission into Africa turns disastrous, bringing the harsh reality of militant warfare into view. The warm ending is very satisfying, leaving us curious about what is going on with the seriously wounded Spencer and Liam.

    This was a great start to the series. I loved the Out for Justice series, and this book was written with much the same approach and tone. The romance between the characters moves along in the background with the focus on the action and investigations going on in the forefront.

    I loved River and Maddox and getting to know their teams. Both were well developed and the alternating POV works to give them both greater depth. I didn't understand why Cris had to be in the story though - he added no value to the story at all, and his showing up at the ranch for all of 2 minutes was unrealistic and unnecessary.

    The other thing that let this book down was the grammar and editing - there were a lot of missing speech quotations (opening or closing), and a few instances of incorrect word use (your instead of you're and similar). Enough that it stood out and distracted from what was being conveyed.

    Otherwise a good read and I look forward to more in this series.
