Cygnus 5: The Complete Trilogy: A galaxy spanning space opera Kindle Edition
Taken advantage of by her superior officer, her career in ruins, war hero Captain Aurora Campos has been shipwrecked on a penal planet. Abandoned by her government, with no one to trust but the escaped deviant she was sent there to capture, she has a lot of rage to go around.
They want her to disappear. To shut up. To stop making waves. But that's not going to happen.
For Bryant Jones – the 'deviant' in question – Aurora is the villain. She's the war-dog of a Christian Fundamentalist state that conquered his world and arrested him for 'unnatural' crimes. 'Crimes' that were perfectly legal in his world.
Yet in the face of a planet full of angry felons, it's a case of work together or die.
And sometimes all it takes to light the fire that changes history is two victims united against a common oppressor.
(Though discovering an abandoned alien doomsday weapon also helps.)

“This book is exciting and fun and poignant and just a cracking good read. It’s very cool to read a sci-fi adventure where both main characters are people of colour and one of them is bisexual. It’s not often in books that a genius queer black man and a staunch badass woman of colour get to save the world together and I absolutely loved that.”
Editorial Reviews
Review
"I thoroughly enjoyed this SciFi adventure... Set in a cohesive, detailed world that gradually spreads to an entire universe as you read the book, I loved the way the characters ofthe protagonists likewise develop and grow with each new chapter.Thereis a lot to say about this complex, imaginative book, but I think thefact that I will still be revolving the story and the ideas and thinkingabout them while I wait for the next one in the series says more than any words." - Jan Jones, Award Winning author of The Kydd Inheritance
"Apparently you have been wanting to write an SF trilogy with queer peoplesaving the world and romance present but as a secondary storyline(I'm paraphrasing, but I believe I got the gist of it correctly). And Isaid to myself - sign me up - because this sounded like just my cupof tea..." - A Dear Author Recommended Read and starred review.
"Can't-put-it-down read. Mind-stretching tech and social situations. Loved the characters. I've already thought up some situations which I am hoping to see in the next volume. Count me as hooked"

- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2019What would happen if, after all the centuries of mankind’s searching the galaxy for evidence of an alien species, one still alive, we actually found one and it decided mankind was not worthy to populate the universe?
So many Sci-Fi books contemplate our battling as well as fighting alongside various types of alien species but have we truly contemplated what would happen if we encountered a being so powerful, so unlike our own, so unable to understand our reason for our very existence?
Cygnus 5 is a book about just such an encounter. Much more than a book it is a space opera spanning more than 1100 pages that you will want to read cover to cover; and still want more.
We send out radio signals every single day; through television, the internet, phone calls, etc. Maybe we should be more careful.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2018All the usual space opera requirements are here, with space battles, alien intelligences, and competing political views, but there's more. Oliver has designed a universe with fanatic religion and the extremes of technology clashing, providing a backdrop for the usual human problems that accentuate strife. It's also well-written and edited.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2018There's more here than space opera. Added to the spaceships and battles are some complex characters, shifting allegiances, betrayals and forgiveness, and an unexpected First Contact. As other reviews note, there are issues of gender, feminism, and body-modification. Both faith and hypocracy arise from the character's religion and family-relations. And solid scifi too. I give it a full five stars for tackling such a wide scope in the best scifi tradition of exploration.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2018This is hard to rate because while there was a good sci-fi story in the mix, the everyone is gay stuff pretty much ruined it for me. If you are gay, good on you but I don't need you to prove it to me every second. This book does exactly that, over and over and over....

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2018Not worth the time to read it. It's not really scifi and the story is a joke with a ridiculous ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2018This is a wonderful read, that sometimes just seems to get too long winded.
But, still a very good read
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2018This was an interesting read which crossed some sexual boundaries where traditional Sci-Fi generally fears to tread upon pain of straight reader wrath at being made to feel uncomfortable. Other writers, such as Ian M. Banks in the Culture series, have crossed traditional sexual boundaries before but it's more incidental and perhaps not as central to the plot here. It's not graphic sex btw, more along the lines of love and attachment, including "traditional" relationships, parent/child, and religious intolerance.
I couldn't care less as long as the story works.
Does it work here?
Yes, with some interesting plot twists thrown in for good measure.
It's galaxy-spanning in scope, not quite hard sci-fi but close in parts.
I give it 4-stars as it could have perhaps been edited a little tighter (it dragged a little in parts), but give it an extra star for the courage to tackle themes a lot of sci-fi writers avoid.
You should read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Complex and compelling
This is a tour de force of a sci fi story. Wonderful plots and world building, a superb variety of characters, and the authors usual lush descriptions. Beecroft had the knack of describing her world precisely and concisely with just enough information to be going on with. I particularly enjoyed this passage: The impression of being outside on a gloomy, rainy planet was strengthened by the patter of water off the distant roof above, as the moisture of the breath of a couple of thousand people condensed and continually dripped.
Very satisfying with plenty of food for thought.
