Searching for the Truth
Amos Decker is back in his hometown of Burlington, Ohio to visit his wife and child’s graves. While grieving his family, Meryl Hawkins, his first convicted murder case, approaches him with two issues. First, Meryl tells Amos he has been given a compassionate release from prison as a result of terminal cancer and second, he relates to Decker that he was wrongly accused of four murders 15 years ago by Decker and wants his name cleared. Meryl’s dying request embarks the Memory Man on a journey of mystery, murders and suspicion. Mary Lancaster again joins Amos as his partner in the investigation. Town coverups by multiple characters suspect to killings, (old and current) lies and blame are in abundance. With our old friend, Melvin Mars partnering with Decker and Lancaster, a sordid redemption begins to unfold.

This is book 5 of the memory man Amos Decker and, in my opinion, the best one so far. As a reader, the author allows you to participate in the clues that he gives, causing it hard to put the book down because you want to find out what's next. It's action-packed throughout, and the way it is written with short chapters makes it easy to read with your attention held.

In this 5th book of the series, we start to see Amos Decker become more personally vulnerable and accessible which is a neat evolution from the original introduction of him. I liked that unlike some of the other books, which sometimes went off in different tangents and at times, confusing episodes, that had to rely on a synopsis at the end to help put it all together, this book seemed to flow and make sense. The other books are very good, but again, for me, this book was the best so far.

Amos Decker, the man with a perfect recall memory, is back in his hometown. But the visit is not a happy one. He is back in Burlington, Ohio to visit the gravesite of his daughter who would have been fourteen.

While at the cemetery with his FBI partner, Alex Jamison, Meryl Hawkins shows up. Meryl is the first man Decker and his police partner Mary Lancaster ever put behind prison bars years ago when he was just a rookie. Meryl is there to tell him that he was innocent. He says that he didn't kill those men and the children. He asks Amos to find out the true murderers. The next day, Hawkins is found murdered. Amos knows he needs to investigate even if this means he could lose his consulting position with the FBI. His boss is not happy with him and neither are some of the cops he used to deal with.

A great addition to the Amos Decker series. Many dead bodies and a sense that Amos was always two steps behind the real killers, kept the story moving and interesting to this reader.

I still have two more books to catch up but Lucas Davenport had kept me busy for a long time.

    Cliffhanger: No

If you haven’t yet delved into the world of Memory Man’s main character, Amos Decker, you’re missing out! While each novel can be read as a standalone, for me it worked better to read from the first book to date. I enjoyed seeing how Amos was growing as an FBI agent and as a man who suffered a head injury via the NFL.
The series introduces Amos when he returns home in book one titled, Memory Man, to learn of the murders of his wife and daughter. From there, Amos spirals into a pit of darkness both professionally and in his personal life. What was really gripping in the latest novel was the way the author wove a mystery. Readers get a hint early as to who is the culprit only to learn…well, I won’t say so as not to ruin it for you who haven’t enjoyed it as of yet.
The author has written a very engaging and riveting tale that kept me turning pages for hours. There were intricacies that made the story a surprise in the direction it takes and reveals a deeper plot than what is first apparent to the eye. Amos is changing since his appearance in book one and in many ways, he is also the same. There were a few heart touching-moments as I read parts that revealed Amos’s internal struggles and thoughts. Amos Decker is definitely a deep thinker. His personality quirks are at times frustrating to other characters but also endearing.
I think readers will enjoy watching Amos Decker as he solves crimes, bucks the system and learns to live with loss. The series starts with Memory Man followed by The Last Mile, The Fix, The Fallen and now Redemption. Suspense, mystery, intrigue, and more fill the pages and will keep your nose in the book all the while engaging your mind as you try and solve the puzzle presented in each installment.
I highly recommend starting at the beginning to really appreciate the character as he changes, grows and in some ways remains the Amos from the first book to the fifth. I hope the author plans more exciting adventures for Amos!

With this number five in the series under my belt, I am pleased to say the life and times of Amos Decker is really getting fleshed out by the author and his trials and tribulations as he investigates crimes still has that focus on the story and not getting too distracted by the on going personal dialogue. I still did not get the twist in the storyline until it was revealed and this one is a doozy.

    I love David Baldacci's books.
This one has Amos Decker. I like the way DB weaves Amos' troubled soul into each story.
I can practically feel his discomfort physically. The plot line is interesting.

I read so many thrillers that often I feel like I am reading the same story on a different version.
This one has an originality. It kept my mind calculating.
