About the author

My protagonist for the Dead Red Mystery series is a tall, blond ex-model turned crop-duster who, to quote Lalla Bains, has "been married so many times they oughta revoke my license."
Lalla is no Danielle Steele character & she's not afraid of chipping her manicure. Scratch that, the girl doesn't have time for a manicure. The first three books are based on my time running my dad's crop-dusting business in the Central Valley of California. Beginning with A Dead Red Alibi, I moved just about everybody to South East Arizona where Lalla and cousin Pearlie continue to chase down criminals.

A NEW mystery series featuring a paranormal woman detective (who doesn't know she's got this gift) and her side-kick, Mai-Lin Song (who doesn't know she's a dog). Hiding in Plain Sight, Book One is coming soon on Kindle.
My romantic suspense books are also on Kindle: A Dangerous Harbor, and Hurricane Hole. If you liked my Lalla Bains series, I know you'll love these books: More romance, more suspense, in an exotic location with nastier bad guys and a bald parrot!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2023A Dead Red Miracle is a mystery with many twists and turns.
I like Lalla Bains and her offbeat collection of family and friends. They are funny sometimes and usually interesting. And this is without any bizarre assistance from witches, magical cats, and the like. This time, Lalla and Pearlie are doing their best to become legitimate private investigators, so the mystery that jumps up and envelops them this time is not something they accidentally fall into as most of their previous adventures have been.
Lalla Bains and her cousin Pearlie are attempting to become licensed private investigators by apprenticing with another licensed private investigator by the name of Ron Barbour. They have bought out his business, and among the conditions of the sale are that he will mentor them for the required three years and write letters of recommendation to the state of Arizona a the end of that time so that they can obtain their own licenses.
But as the three-year period draws to a close, they have fewer and fewer clients and Ron seems to be spending all his time in a bar. When a potential customer shows up claiming he just talked to Ron and refusing to discuss anything with the two ladies, they decide it is time to hunt down their missing mentor. When he isn’t at the bar, they try to locate him at his house – the first time they have done so.
This does not go well. As they are trying to figure out whether Ron is home, the whole place explodes.
Their first suspect is Sheriff Ian Tom’s nephew, Damian White, who had evidently hired Ron to find out who shot his father years earlier. Lalla and Pearlie are worried about him and the Sheriff. However, it appears that, despite his attitude problems, Damian isn’t responsible for this crime. Nor does he seem to be behind the multiple other attacks on Lalla and Pearlie.
Both the killer and their reason prove to be surprising. But the biggest surprise of all is that after Ron’s two ex-wives find the secret place where he had been hiding the money he was diverting from them (and abscond with almost all of it), they leave behind something Lalla and Pearlie need even more.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2016I zipped right through all five of the books in this series. Each one was better than the previous one. They are full of humor; full of twists and turns. In this last book, all the family moved to Arizona. Pearlie and Lalla are working as full time PI's, even though they are not licensed yet. They are working with a licensed PI with whom they have a contract to buy his business at the end of three years; and he will write a letter of reference for them to obtain their license. He gets murdered and they learn just how dirty he really is. He has been hiding clients and money from them, even though they are supposed to be partners. While working to find his murderer, another murder takes place, and then another. And this is only part of the action in this book.
Note to Author: At the end of this book a note says book six would be out in January, 2016. I can't find it. Looking forward to reading it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2015This is a fantastic series of books and I highly recommend them all! So maybe the series is light and not really deep and brain-pounding, but I love the way the author writes, I love the characters, I love the realness of the stories. I need time after reading these books to come out of the story. In other words, I get so caught up I tend to believe I'm there so need a reality check after reading! I could hang with this crowd all the time. I want them for my besties! This particular book takes place in the new venue but it is every bit as alive and fun as the first few in the series. Characters are well rounded, plot is believable, and the comedic antics of some characters makes the book entertaining.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2020I had never read a book by this author before and really did not know what to expect. Am I ever glad I took a chance--I laughed out loud at Lalla and her cousin as they tried their best to become licensed PI's! There is also a couple of investigations they have to conclude--after their business partner is found murdered! Will they ever be able to get their PI license? There really are a lot of twists and turns in this one and as I mentioned quite a few laughs along the way. It is a thoroughly enjoyable novel and I will be certain to read more of this series. Since this was book #5 in this series--they obviously can be read as stand alone!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2016This is the third in the Dead Red Mysteries that I have read and it is just as good as the first two. Lalla Bains has married her police chief Caleb, but kept her maiden name for her PI business. Yes she and her cousin Pearlie Bains has bought into a PI business with the hope of getting training as interns and in two years getting their Private Investigator license. The only trouble is that their "boss" is pulling a fast one on them as well as blackmailing clients and stealing. When they realize this they both go to his house and find him on the floor just as the house explodes. The cousins must prove they can solve the murder to save their business and keep from being accused themselves. It is another romp in Dead Red territory and I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2015When we last visited Lalla, she gotten married and was now living in Arizona. Three years later, her and Pearlie’s dreams of owning their own private investigation business is in jeopardy when their partner is murdered and the only way to save their dream is to find his killer, not realizing more death will follow and what a great job the author did in the telling of this fast-paced and action-filled drama. I like how this was presented with an eclectic cast of characters and a mystery that kept me intrigued, especially when all the pieces came together as the author peppered the scenes with red herrings and some twists and turns to keep me glued to the pages as the puzzling case comes to an end. This was a great read and I enjoyed my time spent with Lalla, Pearlie, Caleb and their friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and addictive
You just cannot go wrong with R.P Dahlke and the "Dead Red.." series!
Lalla and her cousin Pearl are at it again, this time as aspiring Private Investigators whose partner (who incidentally is the one having to help them get their own licence) has been murdered.
As always, the humorous narration style the quirky characters and an interesting plot will keep the reader glued to the story, sometimes chuckling out lout about the mishaps the two ladies are getting into.
Although it would be advantageous to read the series chronologically, you do not have to - events from past books the reader might need are shortly included in the current story. I have read them completely out of order, and it did not disadvantage any of the books.
Go and see for yourself! It is worth it, trust me.
