- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2023I’m a sucker for crime/mystery stories, so I was ready to dive right in. The premise is really interesting, and the title really fits the story well. This book has a great ending, so this review will be a bit looser than some of my others because I refuse to spoil anything!
The main character Jason works in law enforcement, and recently there have been a string of suicides that don’t seem to add up. Jason, along with lead detective Connor, and fellow detective Courtney, are tasked with figuring out what is going on. They have such few leads to go on, I was already feeling frustrated for them. There is no evidence left at any of the crime scenes, but the deaths appear to be more than simply suicides. They start getting clues to help aid their investigation, but it felt like this started too soon in the story. I think it would have been better if the trio would have had more trouble at first pinpointing what is a clue and what isn’t.
The killer gets sloppy, and also leaves notes for the police. Acting off one note, Jason and his family go to a local play, where they notice one of the actresses behaving oddly. Jason follows her backstage, where he hears and argument between her and an unknown man. After breaking into the room, he finds the girl dead and the man escapes.
We also learn that Jason confides in his wife, Maria, when at home about the different cases he’s had. I love that he shares his day with Maria, but one thing that stood out to me as odd was that Maria seems to be surprisingly okay with everything going on with her husband’s work. I would have liked to see more of her side of the situation, given that Jason talks to her about his job throughout the story. Maybe her being worried for the well-being of her family a bit more?
Acting off another note leads to Jason and Courtney narrowly avoiding being hit by a car and chasing the suspect through a local hospital. It’s after this chase scene that Jason comes up with the idea that there is more than one killer. I really liked this idea, and wish it could have been expanded upon a little more. The whole book moves along very quickly, and I would have liked for it to slow down and build some tension along the way. The last few chapters feel very rushed, and I think it could have done with some extra scenes to help make the entire thing read a little easier. The book ends rather abruptly, almost like there should be more, but it’s missing.
The last two chapters are really great. Again, no spoilers here, but it was a great way to end the story and I would like to see more from these characters. Overall, this was a good book with a lot of promise. And if you’re into crime/mystery books, I would recommend giving this one a try.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2023Ok so this book is good. I will say the twist got me not to ruin nothing but dambbb Jason. The ending had me like dang. But it is a good crime book and will have you guessing for a second. I would recommend this book for anyone into crime books thriller etc. Great book.
