- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2014DEATH OF A SAD FACE is an entertaining and well-executed short story in the Serafina Florio mystery series. A young widow investigates the murder of a butler, and is drawn into a web of situations to catch the killer. Things are not as clear-cut as they seem, and Serafina's life may be on the line due to her involvement in this case.
The story has plenty of rich period detail which compliments the work, and adds authenticity to it. It also has a serio-comic atmosphere which works to its advantage, and the labyrinthine pieces of the whodunnit are handled in an appropriate manner, and deepen the mystery for the reader, never becoming heavy. DEATH OF A SAD FACE is a fun read for those who like their stories with a touch of humor, and much panache.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2018One of the highlights of this story, is how intricately the characters interact, and know one another. A small town has its advantages, and disadvantages, as does a large family. Serafina doesn’t just go off by herself to track down Cecco’s killer, but gets information from various village members, the head of the local orphanage, and enlists her own family in catching the culprit. Even though she is a midwife, and amateur detective, Ms. Florio doesn’t see herself as special, just good at what she does. The author of "Death Of A Sad Face" is similar to Serafina – she’s good at what she does.
