Duchess of Terra (Duchy of Terra Book 2) Kindle Edition
They guaranteed our safety and our future
But now their enemies are coming for us
To preserve humanity's survival and freedom in a hostile galaxy, Annette Bond tied her world to the A!Tol Imperium, taking on the mantle of Duchess of Terra to rule humanity in the Imperium's name.
The A!Tol have provided technology, ships, and money to uplift the new Duchy of Terra, but those gifts come with strings attached. The Imperium has their own plan for Terra—but Bond has tricks of her own.
With enough time, she can build Earth a place in the galaxy. But as Bond's many enemies gather their forces, the clouds of war threaten not only the recovering Terra but the entire Imperium.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2017This is the best $2.99 you will ever spend in your life. How much do I like this book? I was given an advance reader copy in return for an honest review and when the book became available on Amazon, I purchased it even though I had already read it - just to do my part to make sure the author can continue to deliver stories like this. That is how much I liked it.
The Duchess of Terra is the second book in in Stewart's new Duchy of Terra series. In the first book in the series, The Terran Privateer, Earth falls to the A!Tol and Captain Annette Bond of the space ship Tornado (a revolutionary new ship capable of hyperspace travel) is Earth's last hope for freedom. She is given a letter of marque and charged with becoming a privateer, doing whatever she can to free Earth. By the end of the first book in the series, Bond has come to understand that sometimes the devil you know is better than the one that you don't. Earth is on the border between two competing powers and while the A!Tol wish to bring them into their Imperium, the slave-trading Kanzi would simply crush the people of Earth under their heel. Annette Bond wins Earth freedom - of a sort - when the A!Tol declare Terra an Imperial Duchy with Annette Bond as the Duchess of Terra.
The Duchess of Terra begins as Bond returns to Earth to try and set up a government that will allow its people as much control of their political lives as possible. She has to convince the resistance that she hasn't sold out to the enemy and the people that life as citizens of a Duchy of the Imperium is their only hope to survive in a hostile universe. She also has to find a way to make sure that Earth has a future in the Imperium as a power, not as a puppet.
Don't worry, though. This is not a political novel. It is at its heart a space opera, which is a genre that I love. As a fan of Star Trek, Babylon 5, and Firefly, I couldn't resist this series. Stewart's world building is first rate and the pacing means that the book is over all too soon. One thing that I really appreciate is that the aliens in Stewart's universe are, well, alien. They are not humans with different colored skin. The A!Tol are tentacled creatures right off the cover of a 1950s pulp scifi magazine, yet they can demonstrate some of the best characteristics of humanity, while the more human-looking Kanzi are truly horrid creatures. Do yourself a favor - buy this book. Then be prepared to swept away into a universe where the stakes are high, but humanity, under the leadership of Duchess Annette Bond, proves that no one puts the people of Earth into a corner.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2023The second in this fascinating series picks up a bit after the first book ends.
As Terra settles into its new role as a Duchy of the A!Tol Imperium our hero, Annette Bond, has her hands full. There are plans in motion to return Earth to its own devices and those plans will just get everybody. There's technology developed that apparently even the A!Tol doesn't know about, and this tech MIGHT give Earth the edge it needs if it can gain enough time to develop it.
Spoilers prevent saying much more....
As with the first this is VERY recommended. The writing is tight, the story is compelling, and the universe the author continues to build is a compelling one.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2024This book is just as good, if not better than the first. Fast paced military action is combined with characters you’ll care about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humans against everybody. Lots of fun,.aliens,.space battles.and.pirates! Woohoo!
Now.Duchess.of.Terra.Annette Bond is responsible for Earth but the.Imperium,.benevolent dictators they.maybe,.have placed.a.high price.on her.remaining.in .charge. With the constant threat of invasion looming overhead Bond.and her council must juggle.Earth politics.and interstelar.commerce.while handling a military coup from the Weber Protocol troops. Its.constant high stepping and fast talking until the guns began to speak.
Probably one of the better first contact series.I've read awhile. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2017This is Stweart's second "Duchy of Terra" book. In book one,
Earth was conquered by the squid-like A!Tol, and Annette Bond
was sent off by the falling government to privateer the A!Tol
imperium, scavange their tech and try to come up with a way to
liberate Earth. While she made some progress, she eventually
came to the realization that it was an impossible task, and
the realization, after seeing the Galactic neighboorhood, that
Earth was going to be conquered by *someone* and if you were
going to be someone's colony, you'd pick the British (A!Tol)
rather than the Belgians (Kanzi). By the time she came to
this conclusion, she was in a position to do the A!Tol a
big favor before standing down, and that resulted in Earth
coming into the empire as a self-governing "Duchy" with
Bond as Duchess. (This is essentially WWI era British "Dominion"
status like the then Dominions of Canada & Australia, but the Duchy
name emphasises that military service is owed to the Empire)
Book two starts with Bond trying to make a go of the proposition.
Sentiment on Earth is generally not in the empire's favor, Earth's
defense forces have gone underground with a sabotage and guerrilla
warfare campaign, Duchy status means *expensive* military obligations
to the Empire, and the Kanzi are nosing around the borders.
The only way Bond can possibly make it work is if her former lover
and system's richest man is still alive (all evidence says he's not),
she can repatriate the profits from her stint as a privateer (she did
not leave on good terms with those owing her the swag), she can get
a break from the Imperial defense contractors (she killed a prominent
member of their first family) and hold off the Kanzi long enough for
the Imperial fleet to arrive (she just lost two of her only three capital
ships). What could go wrong?
This is an entertaining book, nicely balanced between space battles and
politial machinations.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2024I enjoy the premise of these books and the interesting battles. But, the Author chose to insert homosexual relations into the mix. It is nothing but a gratuitous nod to progressive values and lends nothing to the books’ storyline.
I would have continued purchasing the rest of the series, but I will spend my money with Authors who enjoy telling a great story without inserting their progressive viewpoints.
