The New Girl: A Novel (Gabriel Allon Book 19) Kindle Edition
#1 New York Times Bestseller • #1 USA Today Bestseller • #1 Wall Street Journal Bestseller
Now you see her. Now you don’t. THE NEW GIRL. A thriller of deception, betrayal, and vengeance.
She was covered from head to toe in expensive wool and plaid, the sort of stuff one saw at the Burberry boutique in Harrods. She carried a leather bookbag rather than a nylon backpack. Her patent leather ballet slippers were glossy and bright. She was proper, the new girl, modest. But there was something else about her …
At an exclusive private school in Switzerland, mystery surrounds the identity of the beautiful raven-haired girl who arrives each morning in a motorcade fit for a head of state. She is said to be the daughter of a wealthy international businessman. In truth, her father is Khalid bin Mohammed, the much-maligned crown prince of Saudi Arabia. Once celebrated for his daring social and religious reforms, he is now reviled for his role in the murder of a dissident journalist. And when his only child is brutally kidnapped, he turns to the one man he can trust to find her before it is too late.
What’s done cannot be undone …
Gabriel Allon, the legendary chief of Israeli intelligence, has spent most of his life fighting terrorists, including the murderous jihadists financed by Saudi Arabia. Prince Khalid—or KBM, as he is known—has pledged to finally break the bond between the Kingdom and radical Islam. For that reason alone, Gabriel regards him as a valuable if flawed partner. Together they will become unlikely allies in a deadly secret war for control of the Middle East. The life of a child, and the throne of Saudi Arabia, hang in the balance. Both men have made their share of enemies. And both have everything to lose.
Filled with dark humor, breathtaking twists of plot, and an unforgettable cast of characters, The New Girl is both a thrilling, page-turning tale of entertainment and a sophisticated study of political alliances and great-power rivalries in a dangerous world. And it is once again proof that Gabriel Allon is “one of fiction’s greatest spies” (Kirkus) and Daniel Silva is “quite simply the best” (Kansas City Star) writer of foreign intrigue and suspense at work today.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2025I read most books in this series and The New Girl did not disappoint. Gabriel Allon is flawed as all humans are but he's always trying to do his best, in the interest of people and of his country. In this story he partners with a soon to be king in a joint effort to find his kidnapped daughter but they'll be a step too late. What will follow is a conspiracy and a spy/counter spy act involving the US, UK, Israel, Russia and Saudi Arabia with so many twists and turns that your attention will be totally focused on reading the story. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2025I was appalled when (spoiler alert) the author killed the little girl. I still wonder if it was really necessary. I had to stop reading the book for several weeks before I could go back and finish it. TheN I began to wonder whether the author had decided that this was a fictional way to punish MBS for killing Kashoggi. That made killing KBM's daughter a little more palatable. I know. She is fictional, not real. But authors like Daniel Silva make their characters real. That's their job. Anyway, as usual it's hard to know what part of these books are real and what are fiction. The background story is always scary.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2019As with most spy thrillers, it is very hard to give a review without spoilers. I’ve tried to avoid any direct spoilers, but there are aspects that might be given away by what I say. So be warned.
The worst part about a Daniel Silva’s Gabriel Allon novel is that it comes to an end. The New Girl is just as fun, exciting, moving, and thought-provoking as the previous 18. It’s hard to top the early novels, but this is up there.
I do so wish Gabriel Allon (GA) was real. Maybe there are people like him and they are so good at what they do, we don’t hear about them and the problems they prevent. But it’s also a bit like hoping Batman was real. No one person is capable of this – and even if they were it is probably not a good idea to have them doing these things in the way they are done in the stories. It works in Batman and GA because we know, because they are the protagonists of the story, that they are good guys. In real life, without an omniscient narrator, we cannot know that.
The best part about The New Girl was the relationship that develops between GA and Khalid. They are, understandably, skeptical and weary of each other at first, but through the events of the story they seem to learn to trust each other and develop what seems like it could be a deep and long friendship – though the way the story unfolds that may not turn out to be the case.
At this point, 19 books in, we don’t get a lot of character development from the main cast. And there is very little of that. Keller, Mihkail, Seymour, Gabriel are who they are. So you need the new characters to drive that aspect. Silva always does a great job at this, both with new protagonists and the antagonists. Sarah’s story arc is interesting – not so much specifically for the plot of The New Girl, but across the several books she has been in. I think there are some exciting things Silva could (and will) do with this character in future novels (which is part of why she was in The New Girl – as set up for the future).
Silva also usually does a great job of humanizing his antagonists. They are rarely mindless fanatics: they have motivations that might have started out reasonable enough, but have gone deeply astray. Part of what he does well with this is that it is not a matter of some hackneyed, lazy moral grayness, where the good guys are a little bad, and the bad guys are a bit good. It’s more that Silva shows us these are human beings that have a complex history and that they have made (often bad) choices that have brought them to this point. We don’t sympathize with them, but we understand them. They are not merely monsters. However, some of the main antagonists in the New Girl come off a bit shallow. They are either just the tools of some mostly off-stage actor directing them (I’m trying not to spoil things) or they are motivated in fairly basic ways (sex and/or power). Nevertheless, I suppose there is some truth in that—but it does take away slightly from the drama.
There are several surprising elements to this story—I can’t discuss them without spoiling them, but I will say Silva allows the story to unfold without introducing any dues ex machinas. I sort of expected a few or at least Silva to pull back. So I’m glad he had the storytelling integrity to go forward with it.
There were several moments in the story related specifically to Israel that, although they are not essential to plot, I found quite moving; even got choked up a bit.
I enjoy how Silva weaves in current real world events – though I do have to be careful not to confuse Silva’s world for the real one!
I am not sure what I think of the ending. It’ll take some time to process it. Partly, I’m not sure what precisely happened. Time will tell.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2025Perfect condition. Timely arrival.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2025Great story telling! It kept me captivated throughout…. I have always enjoyed Silva books. Especially the Gabriel Allon adventures. I look forward to the next one.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2019When you settle down to devour Silva’s 2019 version, ask yourself, “Who is The New Girl?”
Do you think it’s Crown Prince Khalid’s daughter? Why, because the back-of-the-book
summary says she’s been kidnapped? Stop there. Check out the opinions of a few leading
professional book reviewers, like I did, and you’ll learn that most believe that despite what
Silva, himself, says in Chapter 52. It tells you how lightly they skimmed to get the details for
their review. They should have told you that this book is not about the kidnapping.
it’s about the effect a leadership change in Saudi Arabia would have on the world’s balance
of power . Khalid must abdicate to satisfy the kidnappers’ demands. His uncle, Abdullah,
a friend of the Brits, would replace him as Crown Prince. What’s a spy novel without a mole?
After Chaper 52, a woman from MI-6 tells one operative that Abdullah is a friend of Russia.
Then, it’s a short game of “telephone” until Russia believes a double-agent will rule.
Now we’re getting serious. Obviously, Gabriel Allon is spending less time in the field since
becoming Chief of Israeli Intelligence and some reviewers are saying he should retire.
Why he should not: The kidnapping is not an Israeli problem, it’s a Saudi problem and Khalid
wants Allon to assist in his daughter’s recovery. Allon must consider the extent to which he,
representing Israel, can help. He estimates the impact that a change in Saudi leadership
would have on the balance of power - how friends (the Saudis, Brits, Yanks) and enemies
(Russia) will react. What opportunities related to Brexit and other events will arise to shift
that power. Allon agrees to help but he is undoubtedly subdued, knowing that every
shot he calls will involve somebody else’s play-pen.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2025As usual with Silva books, The New Girl was hard to put down. The storyline woven in modern Middle East and geopolitical realities is masterful.

1.0 out of 5 stars Same old, same old, but now a cliche
This is one of his lesser books. The plot is almost infantile, and lots of developments illogical. One also wonders if Silva is a paid pr guy for NATO or other US/ Israeli organisation. His reasoning closely follows mainstream media narratives, and, of course, the Russians are to blame for all our ills: Middle East instabilty, Brexit, the weather, etc. I , Silva should invent a new hero(ine). I actually struggled to finish it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The next one...
After having read 19 Gabriel Allon books, I just wanted to buy numbr 20 asap. What a pity I had to read that, in the description, Daniel Silva is straying into forbidden territory, publishing number 20, which seems to be something that is denying the authority of Scripture. What a shame he just couldn't keep it objective, respecting all those readers who actually respect Scripture, and don't want to read fiction putting into question the authenticity of the Scripture. This will be the first I'm not going to buy, and probably not any more. What pity, I was so much enjoying it. Daniel 'must you'?

A great read, I took my time reading this book and enjoyed every bit of it.
Looking forward to another Gabriel Allon book.
