Review

IHIBRP 5 star book review: An Amazing Generational Family Saga Comes To An Epic Conclusion! Master storyteller, VL McBeath, approaches the final chapter of her incredibly rich and descriptive Ambition & Destiny Series with as much historical detail and accuracy as the preceding four chapters, presenting her readers with all the pomp and circumstance, trials and tribulations, struggles and scandals, we've all come to expect from the fractured and polarized Wetherby family. The author inserts her characters within the tapestry of Victorian England with great care as she brings to light the important issues of the times, focusing particularly on the struggles of women in regard to self-governance and independence, family dynamics, mental and physical health, and their overall place in society while simultaneously demonstrating men's demeaning and oftentimes callous attitudes toward their plights.

This tale can be categorized as absorbing, compelling, inspiring, and suspenseful, but it is anything but mindless and boring. Over the few days it took me to read this particular installment of McBeath's series, I found myself scrambling to pick up this amazing read every spare moment I could. GOLD Quality Mark "An excellent book and well deserving of gold status." BooksGoSocial

"The conclusion of what has been a most engaging family story."

"BRILLIANT could not put down."

"As always, another brilliant offering from Val McBeath."

From the Author

When I was growing up in Liverpool, none of the family thought to question why our immediate family were the only ones with our surname listed in the local telephone directory. We also didn't question why there were a lot of people with the same surname located in and around Birmingham. We just accepted it as one of those things.

It wasn't even the reason I began researching my family history. That started because of rumours we had heard and from snippets gleaned from my grandad. He was the youngest son of William-Wetherby and although he was only a child at the time, the events of his early life never left him.

Even though my grandad was aware of some of the events in
Different World, I don't believe he had any idea of what had led up to them. In fact, until I started this family history research, none of my living relatives had any idea of what had gone before. The only thing we had heard was that the family had once been wealthy and that there was 'a young woman' in Birmingham who had our money.

We now know much more about what happened, but why things played out as they did, we will never know. Family history research can only give you the 'when' and sometimes the 'how'. What is can't give is the 'why'. What I wouldn't give to go back in time and ask William-Wetherby what really happened! I suspect he might be the only one who knew the whole story.

Born and raised in Liverpool (UK), VL McBeath (Val) initially trained as a scientist and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years.

It was only more recently she developed a passion for writing.

Her first series, The Ambition & Destiny Series, arose out of Val's interest in her family's history. After many years it developed into an epic family saga. Spanning over seventy years, it tells the story of one family’s trials, tribulations and triumphs as they seek their fortune in Victorian-era, England.

Once their tale was told, Val was eager to see if there were other ancestors worth writing about. That was when she stumbled across Nell. As a woman living in the late nineteenth century she was not your typical Victorian housewife, which made her the prefect person to write about. Her story is told in The Windsor Street Family Saga.

In addition to her family sagas, Val also has a series of historical murder mysteries: Eliza Thomson Investigates. This is currently a series of seven standalone books set in the early 20th century. Eliza is a fictional amateur sleuth who makes the most of her position being married to the village doctor. Along with her best friend Connie and occasionally her son, Henry, Eliza likes to help the police with their murder enquiries - whether they want her to or not!

Val now lives in Cheshire with her husband, Stuart. In addition to family history, her interests include rock music, Liverpool Football Club and visiting her two grown-up daughters!

An Amazing Generational Family Saga Comes To An Epic Conclusion!
Overview: Inspired by a true story, Different World is the final book in The Ambition & Destiny Series, a five part family saga set in Victorian-era England. In this final chapter, William-Wetherby seeks a new life far from home after a bitter family breakdown. But, being rid of his controlling and overbearing step-father, Mr Wetherby, isn’t as simple as it seems. Master storyteller, VL McBeath, approaches the final chapter of her incredibly rich and descriptive Ambition & Destiny Series with as much historical detail and accuracy as the preceding four chapters, presenting her readers with all the pomp and circumstance, trials and tribulations, struggles and scandals, we’ve all come to expect from the fractured and polarized Wetherby family. The author inserts her characters within the tapestry of Victorian England with great care as she brings to light the important issues of the times, focusing particularly on the struggles of women in regard to self-governance and independence, family dynamics, mental and physical health, and their overall place in society while simultaneously demonstrating men’s demeaning and oftentimes callous attitudes toward their plights. This tale can be categorized as absorbing, compelling, inspiring, and suspenseful, but it is anything but mindless and boring. Over the few days it took me to read this particular installment of McBeath’s series, I found myself scrambling to pick up this amazing read every spare moment I could. As is standard for VL McBeath’s Ambition & Destiny Series, notes about customs, politics, currency, and ethnicity, along with genealogical charts describing the characters’ places in the family, greet readers at the beginning of the story, providing a quick review and introduction to the world of the Wetherby family. The author also includes a quick and helpful recap of past events in order to orient the reader as to where this epic tale last left off. At 680 pages, “Different World” is certainly a hefty read, but big books have a way of pulling readers into the lives and times of their characters that short stories often miss. Every moment of this absorbing final chapter in The Ambition & Destiny Series is crucial to wrapping up VL McBeath’s amazing family saga, and I, for one, am truly astonished at not only the depth and span of this story but the brilliant, well-rounded characters this author has developed based on her own family records. I cannot say enough about the high quality of McBeath’s writing, the introspective nature of her characters, or her focus on women’s plights and rights during the 19th-century. I highly... HIGHLY recommend “Different World”, and the entire Ambition & Destiny Series, to romantics and history buffs ages 17 and up. Readers Note: The Ambition & Destiny Series consists of 5 books that form one story. Each ends with a crucial cliffhanger, thus it is recommended that the series be read in sequential order. These books are written in UK English, adding to the richness of the dialogue and text.

I read all five books of the series. I became more engaged with the characters and storylines with each book. The settings in the book were so well described, interesting, and informative. I’m glad I stayed with the series, but with the cliffhanger endings, I really didn’t have much choice.

This is a sad but accurate telling of the difficulties of life at this time in English history. The fact that it is a true story makes it even more compelling. Women had no rights at all and were treated as accessories instead of humans . The author writes in such a way that you want to keep reading to the end. Highly recommend.

I was enthralled through all five books in this series! I loved the intertwining of family members lives, I wanted desperately for Mr Wetherby to see the mess he created before he died and suffer! But all in all a wonderful story.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy supplied at no charge by the author/publisher.
This is Book 5 and the final in The Ambition & Destiny Series and follows the story of William-Wetherby Jackson & his brother Charles. Charles had taken an apprenticeship at sea & Willian-Wetherby has been blackmailed into leaving Birmingham. So William-Wetherby seeks his brother & ends up in Liverpool. The brothers catch up & William-Wetherby is encouraged to join the police force whilst Charles doesn’t like sea life & goes into business.
William-Wetherby meets Bella & marries her but Bella doesn’t know anything about his former life, which eventually makes its way into their lives. Due to their financial state William-Wetherby takes any opportunity for promotion to earn more money & goes undercover to catch a gang from Birmingham. This impacts on his future.
This book does jump around a bit which I found a bit disconcerting at first, but to tell the stories of both William-Wetherby & Charles this needs to be.
An enjoyable read & it was good to know how the family evolved & the legacy that Mary left her family.
