Damaged Soul (Black Sheets Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 95 ratings

Book 1 in the Black Sheets series and Book 1 of the 2 of the Damaged subseries.

Eli Mason is damaged. His life story has been a sequence of tragedies, and his soul has barely survived intact. Yet, despite the trauma of his past, he continues to endure, making it through each day the best way that he can...even if it's not always the healthiest way. Jack Winthrop is a wealthy man and a respected Dom in his community, but since the death of his lover five years ago, he's felt empty. Despite the line of subs waiting to warm his bed, he's been unable to find anyone to fill that void in his heart that aches deep down into the depths of his soul. Meeting Eli reawakens his spirit, but the young man has no experience in the BDSM lifestyle, and Jack has no desire for a vanilla relationship. Can these two damaged souls find healing together?

**This novel contains explicit MM sex with significant BDSM elements and is not intended for readers under the age of 18.**
Note: This is the first installment in a series. It is not a standalone novel, and Jack and Eli's story does not conclude at the end of this book.

Book 1 of 2 in the Damaged Series. Anne Pine plans to publish the 2nd book in the fall of 2015.

This is the story of Jack and Eli. Jack is a successful businessman, 37 years old, a Dom and has not been in a long term relationship since the death of his previous Sub 5 years ago. Eli is a 21 year old waiter, had an abusive father until rescued by the State at age 12, bullied while in State care and recently broke free from an abusive ex. Jack convinces Eli to be his Sub and embarks on teaching him how to be one.

So we have a rich Dom who gets off by administrating pain, a relatively inexperience 21 year old, a seduction of the younger man by the older man into the BDSM lifestyle, and even some lower lip bitting at the begining that almost had me fall into fifty shades of despair. Fortunately, the similarities to FSOG stops there. In this book, the trainee Sub actually craves the pain, and the Dom is controlled and not prone to tantrums.

Jack seems sincere and genuine in his attempt to understand as well as accommodate Eli's issues. However, I did question if his reasons to dictate what Eli eats, wears and lives in order to give needed stability, and structure is a valid one. Similarly, how valid is his claims that his administration of the paddle, flogger and what nots is for Eli own good because he needed the pain. It could all be the twisted logic of a psychopath. We had learnt much about Eli's baggages in this first book but Jack's story is still pretty vague. I am hoping the second book will flesh out Jack's character more so that his actions here is better understood.

There is quite a bit of BDSM elements in this story but I think Anne Pine skilfully draws her readers' attention from the seemingly cruel acts itself to the caring component of the act and the emotions of her characters instead.  I do look forward to the next book.

This is an amazing story. Well-written and very emotional book about Eli, a young man who has had a hard life. Jack is a very dominant man who finds himself attracted to young Eli. I loved this book and am looking forward to more stories from this wonderful author.

Really enjoyed this first of two book series about Jack & Eli. Both are damaged in their own way. Bdsm, kink & angst, drama abound. Read them both!

I really don't like a lot of BDSM and this was a little more than I would usually enjoy reading. I don't mind bondage and a little spanking but I have a hard time with a lot of pain and submission outside the bedroom. But that's me. So this was actually written quite well and to my knowledge, followed all the safe, sane and consensual rules. My problems with the story are how quickly their relationship happened and the fact that Jack exhibits a lack of trust in Eli by withholding information about his past. Also, there was the theme that BDSM can solve issues that should be addressed with therapy and counseling. I will never agree with this rather commonly used trope. I will probably read the sequel, since it is fiction and I can suspend disbelief. I just feel that literature influences and impacts real life and it bothers me when an author disregards this.

This story started out with Jack having a physical attraction to young Eli. It ends a few months later with a private BDSM party and a collared Eli. It's difficult to figure out if the relationship between these two men developed too fast but there's strong emotions and psychological issues being discussed and worked through. The biggest red flag is Jack not telling Eli about David. Not telling your partner about the man who you loved for 10 years who died is definitely not going to be a positive in this relationship. It's going to be affecting both characters by this evasion. I am glad that there's going to be another book because it hasn't deal with several important issues, namely Jon and his assault on Eli. Events are realistic and the dialogue sounds real. I hate when an Author can't get believable dialogue correctly expressed. Great story by Ms. Pine.....

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't quite sit right

Ok so Eli is damaged, an abusive ex put him in the hospital after much abuse and that is only part of his issues. So what would have been interesting to watch was a Dom dating and loving on Eli, earn his trust gradually and lavish him with tenderness, I do get his need for pain but even that could have been put forward better.
What I didn't enjoy by 40% was within days of meeting he has Eli in his apartment, dishing out spankings to a young man who got previously physically abused. Not to mention talking about punishments without further explanations and basically giving a crash course on bdsm without any written options or conversations beyond a safeword until later in the relationship.
Then there is the coarse language used, mostly by Eli, who is otherwise painted as a sweet soul who has been badly treated in his life.

I don't have a problem with the first person viewpoint and its in the present tense which is usual and refreshing. But the process of this 'relationship' is not quite believable given what this young man has been through. He even thinks it's wrong at some points, but is then swept along by his body's reactions. I get that with his issues, he craves pain, although I won't divulge spoilers as to what exactly is his other issues. But with the added history of abuse comes fear of pain, and not to mention Jack is the similar size to his abusive ex. This topped off with the fact I'm supposed to believe the times where Jacks dominant harsh voice in a tone of seriousness would turn on a man who was on the receiving end of harshness so soon after they meet.
One of the things I love about the bdsm lifestyle is the deep trust and power exchange, but with Eli's past this was not done right and didn't sit well at times. There was no slow earning of trust and too much harshness, not to mention my pet hate of skipping of time..days and weeks. This helps the reader feel like we're missing bits that are then just glossed over in passing comment. I find in a relationship where a sub is new to the lifestyle, we need to see all the little bumps in the progress and scenes and limits pushed, otherwise it comes across as a bit disjointed.

I also have an issue with a Dom putting a sub through a scene which is only to please the Dom. Now I get the whole thing with the sub's focus and trust in the Dom and wanting to please him, but that is only because the Dom is given the trust in view of having their boy's pleasure and submission at heart. What does it say when the Dom knows the brutality of the cane..and saying it will not be the pleasurable kind plus he tells his boy it's for his dom's pleasure. Hmmm, I'm not convinced.
Then there is the aftercare I love to read, it brings a smile and I get to see the tender care..we miss this, not to mention he wears a gag and hates it..does he mention this after? Don't know because it jumps days later.
Oh and the angst? Not really..even though there's an abusive ex living in the same area, I thought there was going to be more to this but there was nothing. I wanted to see his comeuppance considering how badly he hurt Eli.
Apparently there is to more from these two but there would need to be drastic changes. I love the viewpoint and present tense but this relationship was way too quick and skipped over and not right in too many areas.

Eli is frequently shown to be unconvinced by Jacks methods in the beginning, yet allows him to assert his dominance without exception anyway. It would have been more realistic to have had Jack earn things a bit more considering the past broken trust with Elis history.

Ultimately I also recognize that some of the elements in this book didn't sit right because they are my least favourite of the lifestyle and turn me off than on. I like my bdsm fiction to be on the romantic and cherishing side if things, having a sub parading naked around another man's apartment after so short a time and orgasm denial are not turn ons and so spoiled my enjoyment. I wasn't convinced either, by Jack in terms of being gentle and loving. At times he came off as rather brutal.
