Damned If You Do: The Complete Collection Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 68 ratings

Some sins are worth the price.

Sexy male succubus Rael has an insatiable appetite for men that gets him into all kinds of trouble. And he’s just found his favorite flavor: hunky blond detective Lars Thornsson. When those cool Nordic looks combine with Rael’s smoldering dark charms, all Hell could break loose.

Lars’s job at the Paranormal Enforcement Agency means he’s supposed to be policing demons, not falling in lust — or love — with them. But there’s something about this feisty little sex demon that hits all his buttons.

With no shortage of deadly sinners in his city, from serial-killing succubi to drug-dealing demons, all Lars can do is try to keep his private life from interfering with his work. But Rael has a knack for getting mixed up in cases that threaten both their domestic harmony and their lives.

This boxed set features the following four novellas:

- A Calling for Pleasure (Damned If You Do, #1)
- A Blast from the Past (Damned If You Do, #2)
- A Wish Too Far (Damned If You Do, #3)
- A Glutton for Punishment (Damned If You Do, #4)

Editorial Reviews

Review

I have to say that every single one of these novellas was fun, funny, entertaining, hotter than hell in the sex department and just all around great stories...Rael and Lars are perfect together. Lars is willing to put his job at stake to keep Rael and though Rael always finds himself in a bit of trouble it all gets worked out. I loved their easygoing relationship and all its little quirks...Four great stories that I definitely recommend - 4/5, Tracy, Tracy's Place

I have never laughed so hard in my life. Oh this was so very well done and to have each novella be just a bit more clever, just a bit smarter than the one before, I was besotted! I highly recommend Damned If You Do (the complete collection) by JL Merrow. Fast-paced, witty, and intelligently written, this work is a feast of literary delights - 5 stars, Sammy, Reviews by Jessewave

I want MORE Rael and MORE Lars! Their adventures are funny, sexy, and a heap of fun - 5 sweet peas, Lucky, Mrs Condit & Friends

As with all romances there are problems never more so than when our hero a detective from the Paranormal Enforcement Agency falls for a little sex demon from hell. Cute, Cleaver and sexy, a really fun read.

Very funny and sexy stories ... I love reading this author's stuff. These sci-fi and paranormal stories are a perfect blend for the gay nerd in some of us.

If you like funny and sweet this book delivers it. Lars and Rael make a fun couple. It is a series of short stories.

Look at that cover! Naughty demon with a prehensile tail. It takes a stronger person than me to resist that. And a pretty book it was too, Riptide Publishing did a real good job on the design, with little horns and pitchforks throughout.

I found the premise incredibly intriguing. Male succubus? Interesting. There is a very clear distinction made that he is in fact a succubus, and not an incubus. Oh man, how happy I was that they used succubi as the plural. The word succubusses (or incubusses for that matter) make me want to weep. What kind of bus, you say?

There are a lot of similes used, but they are all so unusual and downright amusing that it keeps it from getting old. Amusing is a good word for the story. It's funny in parts and cute in parts. Sadly, it also reminded me why I don't like short stories much, it gives rise to too much insta-attraction and insta-love. I'm a slow burn kinda girl.

I liked Rael, he's the adorable kind of demon. Who just wants help out and cook the man in his life a good meal. And perhaps own a pet or two that kind burn down the house.

The way the characters speak grated a little for me. It tries to be too authentically... southern, I think. And the use of the endearment "honey" could have been cut by 50%. Perhaps if you read these stories as standalones it's not as noticible, but when you read all of them back to back, the "honey" gets a little cringe-worthy.

Overall, I liked it, but I didn't love it. It was a fast, fun read.

It did get a little monotonous as far as action went and there was a bit too much giving the answer away by foreshadowing but it was enjoyable.

    Hope she continues the series.

Do you have any idea what it takes to get me to read a collection of short stories? I HATE short stories - to me they're like trying to land a jumbo jet on a too-short runway. I also have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, to read anything about succubi, demons and immortals. Just not my cup of tea.

But Ms. Merrow, one of my favorite authors, got me to read these related short stories, and I'm so glad she did. She made my day!

It isn't often that I have this much fun reading! Lars, the 6'-4" cop with the Paranormal Enforcement Agency, is responsible for arresting and banishing demons who come to this plane without a visa, and to prevent demons from harming humans. He's also a quasi-immortal, a 57-year-old who looks 25 because of the genes he inherited from his mother, a fully-immortal Valkyrie. Ho-yo-to-ho, anyone? Sorry for the feeble Wagner reference... nah, not really!

Each story covers one alleged crime, but they work well together because Lars and Rael continue from story-to-story as their relationship unfolds and deepens. Rael is a very rare demon - a gorgeous young sex-succubus, unusual because succubi are normally women. Rael, fortuntely, is a gay demon. He feeds (literally) off men's sexual energy and he gives them orgasms in return - and food, too, when he turns out to be a fabulous cook! Rael is dark, hot, has a forked tongue he can do wonderful dirty things with, and a tail that is a wonder to behold - especially when he uses it as a sexual organ.

Rael is arrested for a crime he didn't commit, Lars gets him out and BAM, instant love. It's not your normal Romance novel insta-love, after all, Rael is a sex demon and is virtually irresistible. Lars is only half-human, so there's nothing preventing him from enjoying his little demon without moral or professional qualms. In fact, they're made for each other.

The great thing about Rael is that he always sees the demon-criminals as lovable victims, not perpetrators, and regularly saves them from their own folly (and imprisonment or banishment). His first save is a demon salamander who is absolutely beautiful, but is an out-of-control fire-starter (who eats coal). As soon as his scales-of-many-colors start to glow, watch out, something is about to burn! Rael wants him as a pet.

Of course, all the stories are written tongue-in-cheek, with both laugh-out-loud and subtle humor. And yes, I did laugh out loud, more than once. I'm so glad no one was here to witness me losing my mind. If you don't get "humor" and "irony", skip "Damned If You Do", it will leave you befuddled.

I don't want to give away any more spoilers. I've said enough about the plot. Just suffice it to say that I am enamored of Ms. Merrow's incredible creative talents - each new character, situation and event is a wonder to behold! Anyone who likes their writing literal and real, beware of this book! It is fantasy - inventive and well-written as only Ms. Merrow delivers over-and-over again.

If you're looking for a good time reading, I recommend "Damned If You Do" with my whole heart. Honestly, I just loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very different ride of the Valkyries
Reviewed in Canada on December 5, 2018
This was a lot of fun. At times it slipped even a bit into ridiculous, but with a self awareness of that which made it entirely enjoyable regardless. The cases tended to end differently than expected all because of the involvement of one little demon and his willingness to look at the situation a different way. In a lot of ways, each story more served to reinforce the idea that love is a bit different for everyone, but always worth it. This was a great light read to have on the go that never failed to make me smile!

Loved this collection, fun, interesting and kept me reading from page 1. If only everyone could have a tail like Rael's! Would be nice if there was more in this series. Enjoyable read and not too heavy like some books can be. Well worth a read.
