Damned If You Do Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 205 ratings

The path to temptation is paved with a hellish amount of paperwork. Soul acquisition is a drag, but if Abaddon doesn’t catch up on his quota, he could be demoted to scooping poop for the Hounds of Hell. With a deadline hanging over him, he heads for the Bible Belt, looking for the perfect combination of sweetness and challenge.

Seth is a blind musician, part of a traveling tent revival. He’s cute, mystically talented, and quotes the Bible at every turn. His soul is pure enough to fill Abaddon’s quota for months to come, and Abaddon is determined to claim it.

The problem? There’s the revival foreman who watches Abaddon’s every move. Then there’s the mystery of Seth’s many unusual talents. Lastly, there’s Abaddon himself. He’s beginning to like Seth a bit too much. Maybe Seth deserves something better than damnation.

But Hell’s agenda isn’t negotiable, and time is running out. If Abaddon doesn’t play his cards right, he could condemn both of them to the worst fate of all—an eternity apart.

Warning: Contains a Bible-quoting twink and an irreverent devil. Also, snakes. Lots and lots of snakes.

Review

"Abaddon and Seth have chemistry to spare, and the temptation aspect--just exactly which man is the tempter and which is the tempted--is a great twist on the usual. And then there's the humor mixed in with the more serious moments...Marie Sexton's delivery is spot on, and I mean, come on, Chapter Four is titled Cock Blocked by Darth Vader, so don't even try to pretend like you're not curious now. And her version of hell...was practically, perfectly hellish in every way." -- The Novel Approach

Yet again with a stupid set of choices to describe any plot. Hopefully it's the equivalent of a "captcha." That said:

I still cry when Yul Brynner dies in "The King and I." Ditto "E.T." Granted, not as much as the first time I saw those movies. And others. Books, too. Like "The Second Son." Sometimes the tears are generated by sadness and loss. But sometimes the tears are generated by something so beautiful it's the only way I have to let the feeling out.

Damned—you should pardon the expression—if Ms. Sexton didn't do the latter to me. I was at the kitchen table when that part "hit," so, fortunately there was a kitchen towel available for the mopping up.

What a wonderful book. What a wonderful, marvelous, hugely funny, inventive love story.

    You should read it.

    Really, you should.

This book gets my ultimate stamp of approval: After reading it for free on KU, I spent money to buy a copy for myself.

As I read, there were a couple of words that kept coming to mind:

Fable - That's what I'd call this story, with its tone perfectly balanced between light and dark, fantasy and realism, humor and potential tragedy.

Chutzpah - As I read, every once in a while I'd pause for a moment to marvel. The author built a light-hearted (yet serious) romance between a devout Christian and a demon from the depths of Hell. I wouldn't have thought it was possible to convincingly create a gay MC who's a true-blue, dyed-in-the-wool Christian evangelical... but isn't suffering a crisis of faith; isn't battling homophobia, external or internalized; isn't ashamed, or broken, or self-loathing; isn't oppressed by his fellow believers; and doesn't need to reject or reevaluate his faith in order to find true love and happiness.

The ingenuity it took to make the love story work was impressive. So were the consistency of tone and the quality of the writing. Normally I avoid stories featuring devout believers of any stripe, but this won me over completely. The only thing I'd read previously by this author was her debut novel, Promises. I didn't much like it, so I'm not sure exactly how I came to pick this one up. But I'm glad I did.

I've read this author before. This is a short story of a devil, Abaddon, trying to make his quote of souls for Satan and he meets and falls in love with a very pure soul, Seth. This story is in the mm genre and paranormal. Not my favourite of this authors work. Some nice twists and turns in this story.

I wasn't sure about this book or its plot. The reviews were good. More importantly, it was written by Marie Sexton. She is an amazing author. If it was Marie's I would read it.

Beautiful story. The characters won't let my heart go. This is one of those truly special stories. I am still emotional. Read it.

For a short story, the characters are lovable and the premise is very good. However, it all remains in the surface when there is opportunity for more development. It will bring you that smug, easy feeling of a happy ending though

super cute short story that made me forget it was a short story! it had just enough information and timeline to not feel too rushed. the characters were interesting and made me cheer them on. loved this, it was adorable, funny, and makes me want more.

Marie Sexton’s description of hell was truly terrifying. All that paperwork…that endless paperwork…in an office setting that would drive anyone insane. No wonder Abaddon is doing such a horrible job of being a devil. There’s no morale and no motivation to succeed…until Abaddon gets the ultimatum that he either picks up his performance or he gets demoted to some darker portion of hell.

Seth is a young man with humble aspirations (he wants to see the Grand Canyon!) but great power. He’s trapped by his genetics and blindness. Until one day, a devil named Abaddon bargains for Seth’s soul.

Seth and Abaddon are an unlikely couple, but their love is strong and true.

John Solo is a fantastic narrator who brings both joy and humor into the audiobook version of this book. His performance makes it easy to listen to the story with enjoyment.

Overall, this is a 3.5 stars book for me. The concept was cute and well done, with a unique twist to it. I wished it was a bit longer and we had more time with Abaddon and Seth together. I loved watching their relationship grow and develop and I wanted more of it.

I'm not a reviewer who looks at tropes and editing, so I'm not sure I do books justice sometimes, but this book was wonderful. A devil seeking to steal a soul. A young man, blind and strong in his faith. There are loads of bible quotes. It's not an episode of Supernatural, but it is a simply brilliant book. It is funny, heartbreaking, beautifully written, pure Marie Sexton and, in my opinion, her best for ages. It has an HEA but it is a story of love and sacrifice. One to re read and keep. Highly recommended.

What a great story, a devil trying to meet his soul quota searches and is drawn to Seth a blind revivalist. His attraction grows so too in his urge to buy his soul and begins to fall in love.
This was such an achingly painful story full of love and emotions fought through a soul!
Read it you won't be disappointed
