DANGEREUSE: Grandmother of Eleanor of Aquitaine (Medieval Babes: Tales of Little-Known Ladies Book 10) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 571 ratings

Red-haired, wild and full of strong opinions, Dangereuse de l'Isle Bouchard thinks her marriage to Viscount Aimery is the highest honour to which she can aspire.
But then she meets his liege lord, William, Duke of Aquitaine. William the Troubadour, a former Crusader, whose court is full of music, merriment and bawdiness. Everything Dangereuse craves.
Dangereuse and William embark on a secret affair--and soon he abducts her from her husband's castle and carries her off to Poitiers, where he installs her in the Maubergeon, a tower built especially for her within his palace.
With William's angry son and two former wives bent on revenge, life in Poitiers for the two lovers is never dull. Dangereuse decides to act as peacemaker, and arranges a marriage between William's boy, Will, and her own daughter Aenor from her union with Aimery. From this arrangement is born the most famous woman in medieval history-, a bold outspoken woman cast in her grandmother's mold--the indomitable Eleanor of Aquitaine.

This woman was certainly not the prim and proper miss that was expected in this time period
This woman was certainly not the prim and proper miss. Bored with her life and her husband-she allowed herself to be abducted by her husband's liege lord leaving all her children behind. She was extremely daring for the time period she lived. You will not quite believe what you are reading! I had to admire her through all her trials and tribulations!!

I so enjoyed this tale of Eleanor of Aquitaine’s grandmother. As I was reading about Dangeruse. I couldn’t help but compare Eleanor and her grandmother. I kept thinking. So that’s where Eleanor got all that spice for a woman of her day. She was outspoken ,was well educated due to this grandmother overseeing she and her sister’s education after their mother died.
Before Eleanor was born while Dangeruse was still young and lovely she tired of her husband. She had four children with her husband then grew tired of him. Dangeruse took matters into her own hands and left her husband to live with her lover. She had three children by him. They stayed together until he died.
When he died she then stayed to help raise Eleanor and her sister. A thoroughly delightful tale of medieval times!

Dangereuse: Grandmother of Eleanor of Aquitaine
    By Janet Reedman
    Reviewed September 9, 2022

Ever wonder where the famous Eleanor of Aquitaine got her fiery spirit? Maybe it was from her grandmother, Dangereuse de l’Isle Bouchard.

Aumerberge, the daughter of Bartelmy de l’Isle Bouchard and his wife Gerberga de Blaison, is to marry Lord Aimery, Viscount of Châtellerault. The only problem is that Lord Aimery may not want wild, red-haired Aumerberge, who prefers to be called Dangereuse.

Aimery is pleasing to look at, and the marriage goes forward. For the early part of their marriage, things are well between husband and wife, with children soon following the I dos. But Dangereuse is not a woman meant for the quiet, domestic life, and when the chance presents itself to live on the wild side she doesn’t think twice.

Life for the spirited Dangereuse changes when she meets her husband’s overlord, Duke William of Aquitaine. William is a worldly man; he was a Crusader and a troubadour, whose court was filled with sensuous pleasures. William and Dangereuse begin a liaison that ends with William abducting his lover from under her own roof, and with her full consent, of course.

William adores his new mistress, even building a tower at his castle in Poitiers that he calls the Maubergeon, especially for her. It’s her own private set of rooms, if you will. Here the two can indulge in books, music, laughter, bawdy entertainments, and other pleasures of the flesh. Life is good until William’s son and heir (another William) and his ex-wives (two of them) show up, bent on making life miserable for the lovers.

Never one to back down from anyone or anything, Dangereuse decides to take on the role of peacemaker, arranging for a marriage between young William and her own daughter Aenor from her union with Aimery. It is this arrangement that will eventually lead to the birth of the indomitable Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Dangereuse is an entertaining novella and the 10th in the author’s Medieval Babes series, each story focusing on a lesser known lady from the Middle Ages. Some are naughty, some are nice, and some – like Dangereuse – just want to have fun.

I just love these little gems of stories in the "Tales of Little Known Ladies" by JP Reedman. What a life she was imagined to have lived. You may not like her as she may appear to have been very selfish, but the woman went after what she wanted. You will definitely see that Eleanor of Aquitaine took alot after her grandmother!

I really enjoyed this book and the account of "Dangeruese" , a woman who flouted convention for love and a happy life! I also found it very interesting that she is the grandmother of Eleanor of Aquitaine! It is so great to bring to life obscure people from the past! I highly recommend this book!

This book is unlike others from this time period that I've read. I've had a hard time lately getting into books, but this one was hard to put down. Ill definitely read more books from this author.

I'm so happy that someone wrote a book about Eleanor of Acquitaine's grandmother, who was a fascinating and captivating woman. In 2020, I found out by accident that she was also my 10th great-grandmother, so I can't wait to have the time to finish reading it. Genealogy is such a wonderful thing! Thank you!

I would loved to have been able to read this series in chronological order. I was confused several times about who begat who . The lady did write many wonderful stories so well I cried and raged right along side them. Awfully sad to learn that Robyn Hood was not real.

This novel about the grandmother of Eleanor of Aquitaine is quite interesting. The author has made the most of what little is known about her, but it is inevitably stretched rather thinly.
