Review

Without a doubt, Scarlett Scott knows how to write a gripping story. Fans of historical romance need to give her books a read - the required steam and drama of the genre can be found in abundance, along with fabulously done light mystery elements to make this standout from the crowd. - Siobhan, Goodreads Reviewer

Their ever escalating escapades kept me turning pages until about three in the morning but it's not all stolen kisses, brushes with assassination, and dinner plates turned daggers. There's also a good deal of emotional baggage weighing down the spirits of both characters and Scott's use of it--of the ways our parents often leave invisible scars on our hearts--is handled with sensitivity, grace, and compassion. - Rosalind, Biscuits and Bodices

Yet another fantastic book by Scarlett Scott!! I love reading her books and am never disappointed! -OnceUponATime, Goodreads Reviewer

This has a
wonderful story that's touching and gives you a sense that the two really do belong together.- Maggie, Goodreads Reviewer

This was an
enthralling read with a good amount of action and danger, not to mention some very heated and heartfelt moments. - Cheryl, Goodreads Reviewer

I loved this one.
I found myself taking forever to finish it because I kept going back to reread and make highlights of terribly romantic dialogue. - Niki, Goodreads Reviewer

I really enjoyed this one!
Scarlett Scott is a must buy author for me and never disappoints! -Sara, Goodreads Reviewer

I think this one is my favorite in the series, so far. It had a lot of humor and heart. Griffin had the right amount of dangerous charm that makes a hero fun to read about. Violet is pure of heart and a bit naive, but I like that she took control of her life in such a bold way. I mean letting her brothers "prisoner" fake kidnap her then marrying him is one way to make a statement! I have to feel sorry for Violets fiance Flowerpot though! Haha! This was really a fun read.

I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

The character development, pacing, and backstory were excellent. I loved the hero and heroine. They had definite chemistry. Their chance meeting via a ball of yarn was totally believable and charming.

One reviewer lamented internal dialogue. I adore it. That, along with well crafted external dialogue, is what is necessary for superb character development. Nothing turns me off more than gratuitous dialogue trying to impart information that would be better served from the person themselves.

My only complaint is that I would have liked more. More of the hero and heroine together, more of the two interacting with the other dukes and duchesses. More of the villain and the brother. Even more of the Earl of Flowerpots and his hideous mother. It would help to build tension. Plus, it would avoid the sometimes abrupt resolutions. I understand these are romances, but the secondary plots are interesting as hell. They deserve well written resolutions also, in my humble opinion. Besides, are we to believe Flowerpot just disappeared?

Griffin, Duke of Strathmore has been accused of colluding with the enemy, something more horrific than the torture he endured while in service for the Crown. Now he is accused of be a turncoat after all his years of service, and it’s one of his own making the accusations. Griffin is under house arrest at the home of a one time associate and friend.

Lady Violet West is the sister of his nemesis and she literally all but fell into his lap, and she is stunning and unfortunately doomed to marry the world’s most boring Earl. For whatever reason Violet believes in Griffin’s innocence and promises to help him clear his name. She also doesn’t want to marry the world’s most boring Earl, and once she has a taste of Stathmore’s kisses, she’s certain of that fact.

This is both a fun, romantic, and adventurous tale that I thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end. Scarlett Scott is fast becoming one of my favorites.

Griffin, Duke of Strathmore, is under a cloud of treason for selling secrets to radical Irish. For over 15 years, he has served England and suffered torture for his country. Now planted papers found in his home implicate him. Since he is a peer, he is under house arrest at the home of the new head of the elite League, his nemesis Lucien West, Duke of Arden. His sister, Lady Violet West, who is engaged to an earl - a match promoted by her brother - is crocheting and Griffin trips over the ball of yarn, landing in Violet's lap. At 24, Violet sees herself as plain and on the shelf - but she is attracted to the very handsome Griffin. Unlike the earl and her brother, Griffin sees a lovely woman and listens to her thoughts instead of telling her what to do. At first, Griffin uses her attraction to put off his going to prison, but he is genuinely attracted by her honesty and kindness. When she asks if he is guilty, Violet believes in Griffin's innocence and vows to help him discover the traitor. The more time she spends with the earl, the more Violet realizes he cares more for his mother and plants than her. All it took was a kiss with Griffin for her to come up with a plan - they should marry, giving Griffin time to prove his innocence and her brother would be reluctant to imprison her husband. All goes as planned and they escape to Griffin's friends - former agents in the League - for help. Violet falls hopelessly in love with her husband, but knows little of the demons he carries from the tortures inflicted on him when he was a prisoner of the French. He has been a solitary man, not trusting in others. But the day after their marriage, Violet overhears Griffin explain to his friends that he manipulated Violet into thinking her plan was her own idea and using her as a pawn. Heartbroken she runs into Lucien who is searching for her. When Griffin realizes what he has done and the pain he caused Violet, he follows and surrenders to Lucien. Beaten and shackled Griffin confesses all to Violet and his love. But as he is taken away to prison, Violet is determined to free her husband from this crime he is innocent of. Together with his friends, they face life and death at the hands of the true Judas. Can Violet save Griffen and his friends and her brother?? Romantic and enchanting story of loyalty, friendship and the power of love!!

Delightful, thrilling and dangerous. Great storyline filled with unexpected moments and just when you think you what to expect the unexpected happens.

I almost abandoned this book in the first chapter. It starts with the hero, the dangerous duke, pawing the heroine, a 24 year old never been kissed virgin, when he trips on her crochet yarn (really?) Within about 4 pages they have their tongues down each others throats. I almost stopped right then and there. The rest of the first half is tedious, nonsensical, and mostly drawn out until the author can get them in bed together. Until late in the book the only thing going for them is they have the hots for each other. You know who the villain is the minute you meet him. There is no mystery. There is also no historical authenticity in details, history, dialogue etc. Because I bought it I figured I should read it but there were times I really started to hate myself for not giving up and deleting it. The second half is better with more action but still a rather thin plot. An okay book for a rainy day read

    🌶️🌶️🌶️/5.

Griffin, Duke of Strathmore, is under house arrest because he is a suspect of committing treason against the crown and so he being held in Lady Violet West house.
Vi has a loveless marriage in a future and she needs adventure and so she strikes a bargain with Griffin in order to help him find the proof that he needs to prove that he is innocent.
I liked how they met and i loved how they went about their arrangement and how things between them evolved however i was not a big fan of the third act conflict. I guess what happened unraveled everything at once but i wished Griffin wasn't so careless especially when he already knew what he was saying was a lie. Now granted, perhaps Vi exaggerated a bit but i guess it was inevitable.
Arden, Vi's brother, was annoying but i guess i understand why.

It is always a delight listening to the audiobooks and this one was no exception.
Cant wait to listen to the next one.

Loved it. Nice pace, even flow, great climax, nice epilog. The characters are very likable and the situations interesting. The mystery was logical and I especially like seeing the heroine save the day and the villain pay the ultimate price for his dastardly deeds. Could hardly put it down.

An excellent book 3 in this series. Well written and a great storyline, though the books in this series are longer than my preferred length.
But one thing that is bugging me is the way some wives have been addressed in these series….example: If Griffin is Griffin Lynton, 10th Duke of Strathmore, then he should call her Violet Lynton not Violet Strathmore. This is how I believe it should be. Forgive me if I’m incorrect.
