- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was a great book, the 2nd book of the series, to me this book was better then the 1st one. Now I am impatiently waiting for the next book in the series. The format was perfect. Echo and Ben's acomplishments are great. Keep up your fabulous works !!!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this book fearing I would need to have read the first book. But though it is book 2 of a series the author provided enough background to make it a good standalone adventure on its own. A young woman who was the only survivor on her colony planet finds herself hijacked, along with the rest of the crew and passengers of a transport, by pirates who basically keep their lost colony in servitude. I say lost colony as in this story starships can only travel certain points, and those points can come and go. So it was for over a hundred years with this lost colony. Echo, and her fiance whose ship was taken by the pirates a year earlier, help the local resistance to overcome the pirates along with the crews of the pirated ships. The book has a nice cast of characters and reads well. The only problem with this book is it reminded me strongly of another book in some ways though I absolutely don't think either author copied the other.
I look forward to reading the next installment.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDark World, the second in this series, continues the great writing, characters we enjoy, interesting sci-fi and a continuing story I can’t stop reading. Thank you again, Mike Waller!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2020Format: KindleAlthough I was unable to read the first in the series, I was still able to read this book as a stand-alone story. The beginning gives a short synopsis of the previous book, enough to grasp the main characters. The writing is smooth and well expressed with little to interfere with reading enjoyment. I also enjoyed the scrappy female lead and her innovative ideas of how to stay ahead of the pirates. I also enjoyed the details of the spacecraft. I bought this book expecting a good space story and I got it!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI'm really enjoying this series. This book took a turn I wasn't expecting. Looking forward to book III coming out.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2023Format: KindleStranded on a lost colony subjugated under a strict regime, our heroine struggles to rally the people to fight back. Because she knows that is the only way she will get off the planet and back to her real mission, finding her lost partner.
This is book two of the series, but it is written as a standalone. No prior reading required to enjoy this book.
This is a military SF book. The story is well written and generally fast paced with all the twists and turns you would expect from a battle plan. The characters are well developed generally distinct, although you can spot a few stereotypes here and there. But then that is not always a bad thing. I particularly like our heroine who is one tough cookie, particularly in a tight spot. Overall, I really enjoyed this story and look forward to reading more by this author.
Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2020Format: KindleDark World is the second in a three part series featuring Echo, the female protagonist. This is book two in the series and can be read as a standalone novel. The two main characters are briefly summarized from book one in the first chapter. What I liked ab out Dark world; there was no excessive violence (it was simply implied), couple of nice twists along the way to keep the reader engaged, a fast paced story line and a very likeable protagonist.
I received an ARC of this b ut was not forced to provide a review.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2021Format: KindleThe world building is good and believable. Echo is a great character, and the story is enjoyable with Diana adding a little humor. I'm enjoying Echo's adventures.

4.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't disappoint.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe second in this trilogy seamlessly continues the story, with even more twists including pirates an evil family holding a planet in slavery and lots of battles to keep you turning pages, well worth reading, I would recommend reading book one first, Baz.
