About the author

Hello, my name's Catherine Cavendish and I write suspense novels, novellas and short stories of the ghostly, haunted, creepy kind that include supernatural, paranormal, Gothic and other, related themes.
THE STONES OF LANDANE is out now from Flame Tree Press - When Jonathan agrees to accompany his girlfriend, Nadia, on a trip to Landane, he imagines a short relaxing break in the countryside, but he quickly discovers that Nadia isn’t just drawn to the ancient Neolithic stone circle, she is obsessed by the megaliths. One in particular holds a fascination for her. Within hours, her personality begins to change, and it isn’t long before Jonathan starts to fear for her sanity. All too soon he realizes, it isn't only Nadia who is in danger
My other novels from Flame Tree Press are:
THOSE WHO DWELL IN MORDENHYRST HALL - Evil runs deep at Mordenhyrst Hall… When Grace first sets eyes on the imposing Gothic house, she is struck with an overwhelming sense that something doesn’t want her there. Her fiancé’s sister heads a coterie of Bright Young Things whose frivolous lives hide a sinister intent. Simon, Grace’s fiancé, is not the man she fell in love with, and the local villagers eye her with suspicion that borders on malevolence.
Her friend, Coralie, possesses the ability to communicate with powerful spirits. She convinces Grace of her own paranormal gifts – gifts Grace will need to draw deeply on as the secrets of Mordenhyrst Hall begin to unravel.
THE AFTER-DEATH OF CAROLINE RAND - Alli is caught between fantasy and reality, past and present, in the life of a famous singer from the 1960s and soon learns that evil infests the once-holy building she called home. Before long, Alli's fate will be sealed, and she will learn about her role in the after-death of Caroline Rand. It begins with a chilling greeting: "Welcome to The Columbine, Miss Sinclair. You are expected."
DARK OBSERVATION - is published by Flame Tree Press. In the dark days of war-torn London, Violet has more to fear than bombs. From deep within the Earth, demonic forces are rising.
IN DARKNESS, SHADOWS BREATHE. Carol and Nessa are strangers with one thing in common, they are in the hands of an entity that knows no boundaries and crosses dimensions - bending and twisting time itself - where danger waits in every shadow
THE GARDEN OF BEWITCHMENT. Historical haunted Gothic horror set in the wilds of the Yorkshire moors - pure Bronte country - with a Bronte theme.
And - THE HAUNTING OF HENDERSON CLOSE. Ghostly horror set in Edinburgh's Old Town.
THE CROW WITCH AND OTHER CONJURINGS is my first short fiction collection and is out now from Weird House Press.
My novellas THE DARKEST VEIL, COLD REVENGE, MISS ABIGAIL'S ROOM, THE DEMONS OF CAMBIAN STREET, DARK AVENGING ANGEL, LINDEN MANOR, THE DEVIL INSIDE HER and THE SECOND WIFE are published by Crossroad Press.
My novels THE DEVIL'S SERENADE and SAVING GRACE DEVINE have also been released in new editions by Crossroad Press, as has my novel of the Lancashire Witches - THE PENDLE CURSE.
I live with a long-suffering husband and a delightful black cat who has never forgotten that her species used to be worshipped in ancient Egypt. She sees no reason why that practice should not continue. Who am I to argue?
When not slaving over a hot computer, I enjoy wandering around Neolithic stone circles and visiting old haunted houses.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2016Having already read the author's previous title, The Pendle Curse, I thought I knew what to expect from Dark Avenging Angel, but this book took me completely by surprise. The main character, Jane, is complex, inconsistent, and I spent much of the novel second-guessing the reliability of her narrative. How many of Jane's perceived enemies were actually deserving of retribution? It's up to the reader to decide.
And any book that leaves me wondering, leaves me thinking after I've turned the final page, is deserving of five stars. I can't wait to see what Catherin Cavendish has in store next.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2016Dark Avenging Angel is hard to categorize into a specific genre. While there are horrific elements in it, it is not horror. The best I can come up with is supernatural mystery. The Amazon synopsis is pretty much right on the money so I won’t repeat what is already written there.
I am certain that some readers may complain that the pacing of the story is slow. Nearly half of the novel passes before the Dark Angel really comes into play. However Ms. Cavendish does a more than admirable job describing and showing the results forged by domestic violence on its victims. Jane’s father is truly a detestable rotter and the reader not only learns to hate him but also gets to watch as his abuse crushes Jane’s personality and psyche. The tension builds slowly as we wait for the Dark Angel to make any sort of dramatic move. Even after Jane leaves home and encounters the boss from hell the reader still has to wait. All the reader can do is cringe as Jane continues to be bullied and abused, this time by her boss. Yet every so often the reader is reward by Jane gaining strength and self-confidence as she learns to stand up for herself. Personally I enjoyed the character study and Jane is a highly believable and well-rounded character.
Once Jane’s angel begins to extract her vengeance the reader is rewarded with a couple horrific scenes. These scenes are well written, tense and descriptive. Ms. Cavendish does not flinch when describing the revenge extracted by the Dark Angel. However if one is expecting “splatter punk” then the reader will be disappointed. This is not rip your spleen out visceral horror.
Once the supernatural element comes into play the reader is left with many questions and a rather disjoined picture of what is transpiring. Why is Jane being haunted/protected by her angel? What is this dark being? All this remains cloudy. We know little more than what Jane herself can ferret out and the reader is often left with questions and a need to know more, just as Jane is. As the story continues to unfold the mystery is slowly resolved.
I found the ending quite satisfying. However the novel does not build up to a fevered pitch of white knuckled excitement. Once finished the reader is still left with some unanswered questions. At the same time they have gained an understanding of where the angel came from, and why it was connected with Jane.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseAs hard as it is to do, I am afraid that I will have to give this book a dnf and I will tell you why.
The gist of the story is about a young girl (Jane) that is tormented by her father (abused) and the father beats her mother. A dark figure appears to Jane in the form of an avenging angel and is willing to help Jane take care of her father, but it doesn't happen at that time. The abuse of the father continues until Jane moves out of the home and then Jane gets a job working at a newspaper - her boss gives her verbal abuse, so the avenging angel appears again but nothing is done toward the boss.
The story goes on like this with nothing happening with any type of revenge, but I became tired of reading about the abuse which is constant in this book but nothing happening with Jane being avenged. The first half of the book is mostly about Jane going through life with abusers around her and what she has to deal with on a daily basis and the dark angel only makes an appearance sporadically throughout the first part of the book with doing nothing of taking care of these people.
This is too much of a slow burn without getting some type of revenge along the way and as much I as I love this author's work as I have read other books by her before this one just did not do it for me. There might be some revenge at the end of this book, but I just cannot keep muddling through the physical and verbal abuse of Jane waiting for the dark angel to do something.
Also if you have triggers for reading any type of abuse then this book might not be for you.
Normally I do not rate books I do not finish but I am giving this one star for a cool cover.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2015I received a free copy of Dark Avenging Angel from the publisher in return for an honest review.
Dark Avenging Angel is the third book by Catherine Cavendish that I have read. I really do enjoy the style of Catherine's writing but this one felt a bit more young adult than her others. The premise was what really caught my eye and appealed to me but it didn't quite get there in terms of horror. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy it, it just didn't stick with me the way her others have done.
The book was well written and the characters and dialogue were believable. I found myself really rooting for the main character Jane and I enjoyed seeing her character grow and become stronger as the story progressed. The book held my attention and I wanted to read on and find out what happened.
The plot and pace were consistent but I would have liked it to have delved a little deeper into the creepy side of the angel and of the dreams. There was potential there to really expose the evil, scary intentions of the angel and I think because it didn't really go into that as much as I would have liked it to that that is what made it feel more like young adult horror than horror for me.
I kind of feel like I'm left wanting to know more, which in reflection is a good thing as it means the story caught my interest, but at the same time it's because I feel the book never really reached the depth of detail and horror that it had the potential to reach.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page-turner
If there's one thing I enjoy about this author's books it's that her writing is just so easy to read (even the parts that make me shake in my socks). I seem to get carried along very happily in the flow of her prose. Dark Avenging Angel is a new "take" on the average angel books in that this one comes straight out of Hell.
Jane Powell starts the story as a young girl, living with her loving mother and terribly cruel, abusive, father who regularly beats her mother - often enough to put her in hospital. As a result and thanks to him Jane has a traumatic childhood. Yet a dark figure appears to her, usually at times when she's most terrified, who tells her all will well. The reason for this apparition is explained when Jane is older. Jane can "nominate" three names that the angel writes in a ledger and, in due time, the angel will reap horrifying revenge on them. Of course, her father's name is first on that list. As Jane starts working she experiences dreams that hold a message for her and, at the same time, another joins her father on the revenge list - her boss who tries to rape her. This is the time that Jane realises the angel is not out of heaven and she glimpses the horror of the eternal torture that are meted out on her tormenters.
All is explained at the end and the threads are joined up like a well woven jumper, leaving me, the reader, perfectly satisfied (if not a little shaken) with this novella that I read in one day. Definitely a page-turner from this talented writer of horror stories.
