Editorial Reviews
From the Author
Stalkers far outnumber serial killers. Each year they threaten and intimidate 3.4 million people in America. Although stalkers may profess love for the objects of their obsession, many seriously injure or kill their "love object."
Domestic homicide is rampant in the US. The statistics: Every day, 3 women, 3 children and 1 man die in domestic violence. Women and children rarely kill family members. Men commit the majority of domestic homicides. Some are crimes of passion. Others are carefully calculated. Why bother with a divorce when you can kill your spouse?

About the author

In her travels, Susan Fleet has worn many hats: trumpeter, college professor and music historian. While teaching at Berklee College of Music in Boston, she began killing people. Fictionally, of course! In 2001 she moved to New Orleans, the setting for her award-winning crime thrillers featuring NOPD Homicide Detective Frank Renzi.
Susan still plays her trumpet every day, but spends most of her time dreaming up new ideas to terrify and enthrall her readers. See more at http://www.susanfleet.com Her other passion is promoting talented female musicians. See them here http://susanfleet.com/morewomenmusicians.htm

- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWas Albert DeSalvo really the Boston Strangler, or did an obsessive desire for fame drive his "confession?" What real life stalking/attempted murder case in the 1940s inspired Bernard Malamud's novel, and the Robert Redford film, "The Natural?" What prompted a misfit, obsessed with Steffi Graf, one of the greats of women's tennis, to stab a young rival on national television during a tennis match? What deadly triangle in the post World War I jazz age, became the basis for James M. Cain's "Double Indemnity" and "The Postman Always Rings Twice," both made into major films? Did Olivia Newton John live in fear of two male stalkers, unknown to each other, both bent on killing her?
These are some of the fascinating cases described by Susan Fleet in her true-crime book, DARK DEEDS. Fleet gives the reader a degree of psychological insight into the depraved minds of serial killers and stalkers, some of them infamous, others obscured by time, yet equally notorious in their day. Who remembers Herman Webster Mudgett, a physician, bigamist, charmer of ladies, and a contemporary of Jack the Ripper? Yet Mudgett's tally of victims may have risen as high as 200. And in an age when female serial killers were unheard of, there was Brynhild "Belle" Storseth, an alluring, full-figured woman with attractive features that concealed a classic sociopath. And finally, there is the heartwrenching story of a beautiful twenty-two year old woman in Pakistan who attempts to leave her husband, only to be left hideously scarred in a vengeful acid attack.
As always, Fleet's narrative skills hold the reader fast to every page. Each account is presented with an economy of words, yet just enough detail to create a vivid impression of people and events. Often horrendous events. The pace never lags, which is characteristic of Fleet's fiction, as well.
My one disappointment with this fascinating glimpse into the annals of true crime was that it lacked photos. I was curious to see what some of these infamous characters, especially those from the nineteenth century, looked like. If I had to subtract a half-star from this 5-star review, it would be for the missing photos, not the writing. For fans of true crime, as well as readers interested in criminology, DARK DEEDS is highly recommended.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe author has compiled a collection of synopses of high profile murder cases. The facts are presented in an unemotional way, which I appreciated. I was able to have my own emotions rather than be led by the author. I enjoyed remembering some cases, and discovering a few new ones.
The last chapter is a departure from the rest of the book. The author uses this chapter to vent some of her passion for Asian women who are victims of the acid attacks. She uses the high profile Pakistani victim, who brought the issue to world-wide attention. She references the Oscar-winning documentary, and that director's emotional connections to the subject. Having seen that documentary, I highly recommend it.
If you are a student of criminology, this book is "murder light." If you want a glancing overview, this is an excellent reference source for that.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe tone of these short stories seems a bit unprofessional in both the writing and style. Let me elaborate; the tone was often dry and straightforward, as if it was written as high school report on the subject. The nature of these crimes is inheriently impassioned and bizzare, however the author does not paint the scene in a way which emotionally attaches the reader to either the protagonists or antagonists. Naturally, it should not be hard to elicit emotions when discussing serial killers (see "Dexter.") but the dry, almost legalise tone removes any chance of the reader becoming entertained. By all means if this book is free and you enjoy the subject matter...it's a quick read. Unfortuantely this material is not good enough to demand a purchase price. In conclusion, I would read additional books on the subject, but not by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI am happy to be the first to review this very informative book. I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but I'm glad I read this one. This book tells about many cases of murder. It is a good book to read if you're interested in reading about true crime but it is also a good resource book for authors. Susan has definately done her homework for this book. Some of the cases I knew about but some I had never heard of. As an author, my mind started spinning with each case. The book is very well written and moves along at a good pace so that it keeps you turning pages. Thanks Susan for enlightening us. I see that Susan has written fiction also based on some of these cases. I will try some of those too.
