About the author

Tom Williams used to write books for business. Now he writes novels set in the 19th century that are generally described as fiction but which are often more honest than the business books. (He writes contemporary fantasy as well, but that’s a dark part of his life, so you’ll have to explore that on your own – ideally with a friend and a protective amulet.)
His stories about James Burke (based on a real person) are exciting tales of high adventure and low cunning set around the Napoleonic Wars. The stories have given him the excuse to travel to Argentina, Egypt, and Spain and call it research.
Tom lives in London. His main interest is avoiding doing any honest work and this leaves him with time to ski, skate and dance tango, all of which (before covid) he thought he did quite well. In between he reads old books and spends far too much time looking at ancient weaponry.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2019Clever and darkly fun, this is was a good read! Since is a novella, it was easy to pick up and enjoy. The characters were distinctive and the banter fun. But underneath the story was a shiver - like Ray Bradbury's "Something Wicked This Way Comes", the story takes the characters on a journey into magic and leads them to a place they won't easily forget (or the reader either). I'd love to see the author try his hand at a longer book in this genre. It was over far too soon. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 16, 2020Dark Magic is dark fun! Tom Williams plays in some familiar scary story territory with a deft and clever tale, incorporating a classic but with contemporary twists. I knew the characters were heading in an inevitable direction and I still enjoyed the ride. That's good writing! Characters and setting are both compelling. I was too scared to read it in one sitting.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2023Such a wild ride! This novella was fun to read: the details about magic performances, and the underlying threat of a Faustian bargain drew me into the plot immediately, and I did not put it down until I was done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal read for a dark night, in a dark deserted house. Bring gin.
This isn't my usual sort of thing, but I saw it advertised on Halloween and thought I'd go for it as a short light read. Tom Williams is obviously an expert on magic and probably a member of the Magic Circle as he seemed to know everything there is to know about the business of running a Magic Show, from sawing people in half, to what to do with the doves. This story tells what happens when real satanic magicians set up a rival show, people begin to disappear, and our hapless heroes pull out all the stops to close it down. The tone of the novella is light-hearted and though it doesn't exactly include jokes there are some amusing one-liners, and the characters are well-drawn and convincing. The only one who is a bit of a cipher is the mysterious woman, Debbie, who flits in and out of the book giving us a hint of mystery that is not unveiled until the end. Get ready to suspend your disbelief and enjoy this funny and macabre ride.

4.0 out of 5 stars A story to make you shudder but holds you firmly in its grip
A novella from an accomplished writer. Other reviews have said what it’s about, so I won’t say that again. I found the characters interesting, each one different. As the one group asked themselves why they should have to be the ones to sort out the other group who were using black magic for their acts, which resulted in nasty accidents for their volunteers well after the show, I was also asking myself the same thing. I was immediately suspicious of ‘Debbie’ and realised well before the end who she really was and what she was up to. I found this to be a well-written and chilling story; I can’t honestly say I laughed at the uncontrolled scene with the children and rabbits like one reviewer says – perhaps I’ve been involved in too many ‘uncontrolled children’ scenarios to be amused, although it would be amusing to many. The fates of the various magicians made me shudder – I think I have too much imagination – and the ending was pretty much as I suspected. Even so, it was a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, funny, and gripping
Writing a contemporary supernatural thriller is a bit of a departure for Tom Williams, whom I know mainly for his Burke novels (set during the Napoleonic era), but he carries it off extremely well. I don't know how much research he had to do into the magical community, but the world-building is very well done. There are a vast number of characters for such a short book, but it's not difficult to keep track of them, and while none of them are portrayed particularly deeply -- it's a novella, after all -- they are distinct and quirky and very realistic. The twist at the end was also expertly handled, and the pacing is precisely right for a novella of this length. I found it grippling and very enjoyable. It also made me laugh, which is always a plus!
In short, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read shot through with dark humour.
Enjoyable read shot through with dark humour. When is magic actually magic, and what's the price?
You may never look at a magic act the same way again.
