Joel Suzuki, Volume Six: Dance of the Darkeye Kindle Edition

5.0 out of 5 stars 1 rating

With the help of an enemy-turned-ally, Joel Suzuki has returned to the magical, musical island of Spectraland. He’s ready to learn the licks and riffs he needs in order to stop his nemesis from conquering all of existence.

But after an unexpected betrayal, that plan is no longer practical—if it was ever possible. Joel’s only choice is to embark on a hazardous journey through alternate realities, gathering the energy of multiple Songshells through a perilous process that jeopardizes not only his own life, but the integrity of the multiverse itself.

Meanwhile, another threat has emerged as forces from faraway worlds conspire to destroy both Spectraland and Earth. Faced with foes on all sides and racing against time, Joel must find a way to complete his mission while dealing with romantic distractions, fading memories, and—maybe the biggest danger of all—the corrupting influence of his own growing power.

I have now read all six books in the Joel Suzuki Series. As with the ones before, this one rocks! Although the series is initially geared toward a teen/young adult audience, I am a Gen Xer and the author has a lot of pop culture references throughout his books that you'll catch and enjoy if you're in that generation. This was definitely a favorite due to how cleverly it was written and how well Brian Tashima plays out Joel's story across alternate realities and multiple timelines. I won't spoil it but there are some interesting twists I didn't see coming and some decisions Joel has to make that stretch him beyond where he's been in the past. Although most of the books in this series are stand-alone stories, for this one, you'll get the most out of it if you've read at least the first few books in the series so you have a feel for the main good guys and bad guys, as well as the magical musical sci-fi fantasy world that is Spectraland. This is also a great series for someone who is neurodivergent as the two main leads (Joel & Felicity) are on the autism spectrum and although being autistic isn't a big plot point in later books in the series, when it is mentioned, it is done so in an affirming way.
