- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2014It's not often I'll read a book that makes me want to not write my own stuff! But this story was an excellent read and I ended up having to read to 2am in the morning to finish it.
This book had scifi, military, post-apocalyptic (thank goodness, not Earth, again) and mutant themes.
It's going to be hard in one respect to review it properly without giving anything away but it didn't seem to matter which character Dylan used for point of view it was all towards fulfilling the plot, moving the story forward, or in some cases finalising smaller subplots. Because of the nature of the PoVs it allowed for a lot of tension to build. It also meant when you read a new PoV you were already expecting things to happen. Repeated PoVs then allowed for character development and perspective building. It was just awesome!
On top of that nicely constructed crafting, Dylan had action, romance, and thrills all with great conflict, poignancy, grit, dirt, treachery, and on top of that it was interspersed with wonderful description that was 'just right'. It didn't drag on but Dylan made sure it was there which allowed me, as the reader, to be set firmly in the scene and feel that magic that happens when you are with the characters and living with or through them. Lane was just fantastic as the main character, fantastically written, but they were all good.
Dylan also allowed the story to unfold. This meant I was caught up in the story, so when more information came it was like, 'Oh, no!' 'Or, hey that's terrific' but I wasn't skipping ahead to find out, because everything written was interesting - nor was I 'hanging out' for something revealing. This meant the pace was spot on and the ebbs and flows of the story were consistently good. For example, there was some action, some scene description, some conflict, some reactive thought processes of a character, some movement, some action, some recovery etc.
I highly recommend this book not just for reader's -- enjoy it, but for writer's too --dissect it!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2015Review of Dylan J. Morgan’s The Dead Lands If you love science fiction, or not, you have to read this book. I want you to picture that you’re the president of a planet that is in the middle of a nuclear war. Everything and everyone is sure to die form the blast or the nuclear fallout. You, your family and some of your closet cabinet member are frozen in cryogenics for 100 year to rebuild after the fall out danger is gone. Now one hundred years later a neighboring planet gets the distress call to come get you and a man who was jousted from the Army for an accident five years early is strong-armed with the choice of going or death. The Colonel, Colonel Paden, is a fat cat on his planet and with the corruption in the government the man can have on put to death with a word. Lane, once in the army, now a government head-hunter have no choice put to go to this dead planet. However, when he and the crew of soldiers get there they find the planet isn’t dead and danger is everywhere. This is, no only, magnificently written book by Dylan Morgan it is also a griping your gut thrill ride read. Dylan had truly created a futuristic story that has death, suspense, thrills that keep the read wanting to find out in Lane, the ousted soldier will make it off this planet alive.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2014The newest offering by Dylan Morgan is a excellent ride through a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world. Fans of Mad Max and DOOM will love this story.
The plot follows Lane, an ex-soldier turned bounty hunter. Lane's got a lot of internal conflict as he's had a terrible experience that's altered his life in many ways. Enter an undermining commanding officer named Paden who's planning a mission to a supposedly desolate planet to return its president to power. Along with his fellow soldiers, Lane gets sent unwillingly on the expedition, but from there everything goes from bad to worse
Morgan's writing is crisp and clear, dragging the reader along directly beside those in the greatest danger. His descriptions are visceral and he pulls no punches when it comes to the violence found in war. The brakes have definitely been pulled from this novel and once it starts rolling, there's no slowing it down.
All in all, this is a very enjoyable post apocalyptic novel that will appeal to horror and adventure fans alike.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2015I’m a sucker for a story that doesn’t hold back. The Dead Lands not only takes you to the edge, you can feel that edge crumbling beneath your feet—and you love it!
This vivid, action packed tale follows Lane, a more than capable bounty hunter on the planet Erebus. A former soldier, Lane lost everything (including his girl) after being blamed for a terrible tragedy. When he’s pulled back into the army for an assignment that takes him off world to the apocalyptic planet Hemera, the phrase ‘all hell breaks loose’ comes quickly to mind. And it doesn’t stop breaking loose until the very last page.
100 years has passed since Hemera was devastated by war and Morgan paints the picture of this ravaged world with such carefully detailed brushstrokes that you feel the desolation and death almost as if it’s another character. Even when describing the hideous, of which there is plenty, the prose was beautiful. The storyline was absorbing. The writing was at times gritty, poignant, and brutal, but it always flowed, moving the plot forward to a nail-biting conclusion. I enjoyed every character, even the ones I was hoping would fall prey to Hemera’s many dangers.
The Dead Lands is a gut-wrenching roller coaster of a book. I’m looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

Synopsis:
Lane is a bounty hunter for Erebus' corrupt government, his life a constant battle against past demons. Framed for murder, Lane is offered one option to avoid the death penalty: rejoin the army and partake in a covert operation to the apocalyptic world of Hemera, Erubus' sister planet. A century after the nuclear conflict that ended mankind's third age, Hemera has now sent a distress signal to it's sister: the president has awoken and he's calling for aid. Early intelligence reports indicate the mission will be straightforward, that Hemera is a vacant shell with all forms of life and hostility extinguished. They are wrong. Review:
To say I was hooked from the first chapter would be an understatement. This story really grabbed my attention and pulled me in from the very outset. Lead character Lane is well written and endearing; I was rooting for him from the very start of his journey and experienced a myriad of emotions as I travelled alongside him for the duration of his treacherous mission.
Hemera's desolate landscape springs to life with Morgan's perfectly descriptive prose, the planet's inhabitants scarily so. Alongside the action, there are some unexpected and wonderfully touching displays of humanity.
My only criticism is that there are a few grammatical errors here and there, but this is my pedantic proofreader side butting in. That aside, I was utterly absorbed, reading until the early hours, determined to reach the dramatic conclusion.
This book will not disappoint - buy it now!
*I'll admit, I'd not heard of the author until this book was recommended to me by a friend. I get recommendations all the time, but am often disappointed, so tend to approach with trepidation. Once I'd read the synopsis of this book, however, I bought it without hesitation*

3.0 out of 5 stars Sci fi dystopian post apocalyptic romance with blade throwing zombies
3.50 stars - this actually started out as 5 stars, because this is a marriage of multiple genres - sci fi dystopian post apocalyptic romance with blade throwing zombies, phew! What a way to revive all genres at once.
I am all for multiple characters point of view but it gets diluted because in the beginning I was so invested in Lane and his journey to Hemera. Turns out that it was a suicide mission with a bunch of mist fits.
They could do without the romance or even tone it down to background noise. But I’m a sucker for romance (see my other reviews) so I was disappointed there was no happy ending. In fact the author left it out there without telling us how the journey home went for Blaine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this book NOW, it's brilliant!
This is, without a doubt, in the top five 'indie' books I've ever read, and one of the best books I've read in a few years, full stop.
Right. I don't like Sci-Fi. I have zero interest in spaceships and mutant beings. I do, however, love the whole post-apocalyptic thing, which is what made me want to read this book, as well as its excellent title. I am so glad I made that choice!
Basic plot: a motley crew of soldiers are sent from one planet to save the president of a second planet. President has lain in cryogenic suspension since an end-of-world nuclear war a hundred years before.
Dylan Morgan is one hell of a writer. Each character comes alive immediately; we are given no description, physical or otherwise, but I could tell EXACTLY what each person was like almost as soon as they were introduced - a rare talent indeed. The Deadlands is told mostly from the point of view of Lane, a former soldier and current bounty hunter, but also with guest appearances from other members of the team and connected characters, including one chapter from the point of view of one of the mutants. Very, very clever indeed, and actually put a different slant on the whole thing.
Morgan's writing is clear, concise, never rambling. He understands dramatic impact, suspense, pathos, emotion, though I suspect all this is executed automatically, as it is with those who can write this well. If you like this sort of book you will LOVE this, and I think you will even if, like me, you suspect it might not be your sort of thing. Why? Because Morgan realises something important. A truly great novel is all about the CHARACTERS, not about the plot. The plot is terrific, too, but this story is about human nature: love, loss, greed, betrayal, despair, optimism, friendship, family and strength.
Highly, HIGHLY recommended. I suspect I might be raving about this book for quite a while!

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great read!
The story begins on the planet Hemera, in the capital city of Magna, where the president, his family and key members of his staff are being cryogenically frozen before Hemera is completely destroyed by a nuclear war. A century later, on Erebus, a distress signal is received from Hemera. A small group of operatives are chosen to travel to Hemera to investigate, find the President and help to restore the planet. Intelligence reports state the planet is uninhabited and barren, without the existence of any life forms, so they should encounter no difficulties.
Lane, a disgraced former soldier, believes he is being given a final chance, albeit by the corrupt Colonel Paden, to clear his name while escaping the death penalty for a trumped-up charge of murder used to coerce him into joining the mission. The team destined for Hemera have no reason to doubt Paden’s assurance the assignment will be straightforward and without complications. Nevertheless, it becomes apparent immediately on entry into Hemera’s atmosphere, all is not destined to go as smoothly as the team hoped.
The once beautiful and thriving Hemera is a desolate wasteland peopled by gangs of marauders and mutants brought vividly to life by the clear and descriptive writing. Dylan Morgan makes it so easy to visualise the group travelling through the rubble, debris and ruined buildings, fighting the bandits to reach their destination. Their fear and revulsion for what awaits them in Magna. And their ultimate fight for survival against all odds and the most horrific of antagonists.
This is a very well crafted story with perfect pacing, the drama unfolds with consistency to keep the narrative flowing effortlessly. The characters are well-developed and real, Lane especially, but all the personalities are drawn brilliantly, whether you love or loathe them. I think this story covers every eventuality with action, of which there is plenty, greed, deception, horror and sadness. Balancing out the negatives are loyalty, a touch of romance and truthfulness. And the promise of satisfactory karma for the villain of the piece.
It’s graphic, gruesome, gritty….and great!
