A nail-biting, psychological suspense-thriller, Dead to Them weaves a web of deception, lies, and paranoia in the city of Mumbai, where every face hides a dark story, and uncovering it can lead to disastrous consequences.
About the author
SMITA BHATTACHARYA writes atmospheric cosy and psychological mystery fiction. She is also a management consultant, coffee lover, and gipsy-in-her-head. She lives in Mumbai but has solo travelled to 40+ countries and thus, her stories are heavily inspired by her travels and by those she meets.
Smita has six published books and counting. She has worked in a vineyard, in a newsroom, in a school, in a library, in a bank, in an audit firm. She has too many stories to tell and not enough time.
Smita thrives on crime and coffee. Though she prefers cafés, she occasionally also hangs as @smitabe on Twitter and Instagram. You can read her colourful travel and life stories at www.smitabhattacharya.com.
My take:
This is a mysterious story that keeps you intrigued right from the first chapter.
Moira, a beautiful, young independant woman goes missing one fine day. Everyone is worried, her colleagues, her boss, her friends. Each begins their search for her in their own ways.
But as the story progresses, we get to know that everything is not as simple as it looks. Each person is hiding a dark secret. And Moira's disappearance threatens to bring all secrets out in the open.
The cliche is that this is not the first time that Moira is absconding. So people are skeptical whether this is the repeat of the last time, or if it's more serious than it seems.
Neither is Moira what she appears to be. As layers and layers of mysteries are uncovered the story keeps taking new turns.
The language is lucid and easy flowing. All characters are well formed and stay true to their self. We can empathise with each characters POV as we read the story.
The suspense is held on till the very end, and reader is kept guessing and double guessing till the very end.
The cover page is nicely designed and reaches out to the reader to pick it up.
I rate it five stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading !!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSome books leave you with utmost thrill to experience .
Dead to Them can prove to be a thrilling experience for the readers because of its storyline.
•••
The story starts with Moira , who is a young , working lady gets lost suddenly without any proper evidence left behind. Misha being a good friend of her tried several times to reach out to her but failed . Misha was a married woman and going to be a mother soon. As the things got opened , Misha got to know from Moira 's colleagues that this is not the very first time she has flew away without any prior information but she used to always return after a week or ten . But this time there were no signs of her returning.
••••
As the story reaches to its end , we can see the true life of a Mumbai City where people don't know what is happening in their next doors. The friends of Moira started doubting each other . Moira 's life story can be seen with lots of heartbreaks and desire to find a soulmate for herself.
•••
The storyline presented in the novel is filled with thrill and suspense. Till the end of the novel the author has not left the thrill . The language is lucid and the story is large and maybe odds at time but overall can be read to have a thrilling experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting thriller
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI like thrillers and mystery as a genre. And discovering new authors is exciting. A good thriller not only keeps the readers glued to the story but also tells much more than a crime committed and solved. And this is exactly what Dead to them by Smita Bhattacharya does.
The story begins with the disappearance of Moira working in Brevity. Smart, successful Moira whose career was a cause of envy is suddenly untraceable. Her friends, colleagues have no clue.
But should they panic? What if she just had a breakdown like last time? What if she will be back and make them all look like fools? As the story unfolds, the facade falls out. Moira’s life was not what it seemed. Beneath the calm was a storm raging. And as her friends start facing these aspects of her life, many kept secrets tumble out.
An interesting page turner with very humane characters. Many of us will relate with the women in the story and the crisis that they face. Recommended if you enjoy multi layered stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent thriller for once a read.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love whodunit hunt thrillers, keeping you on edge, guessing & contemplating.
In 'Dead to Them', Smita Bhattacharya built a world of lies, deception & betrayal.
Set against the hustle & bustle of Mumbai city, Moira, a consultant from an MNC goes missing without a trace & it's upto her friends to find the missing pieces of the puzzle of Moria's life and find her whereabouts. But the truth is far fetched than what meets the eyes & the secrets that surrounds Moira could destroy the lives of the ones around her too.
So what happened to Moira? Who was responsible for her disappearance?
The narrative shifts between the past & the present. The past narrated from Moira's POV & the present from a 3rd POV.
It's a gripping tale, with finger pointing towards every single person around Moira's life, even the closest of her friends.
But what didn't work out for me was the length of the chapters. I liked reading about the past & the brainstorming over present scenario but the editing could've been more crisp. A finer editing could've made this a thriller that keeps you on edge.
I was irritated with the behaviour of the characters but I won't deny the fact that people like them exist around us.
The ending though is a big 👍. I was guessing upon it after a few chapters but still the revelation was good.
While reading this, I was reminded of the Hollywood series 'Pretty Little Liars'. (Have you watched it?)
Overall, it was a decent read & I'm looking forward to reading more of Smita Bhattacharya's works.
If you are someone new to the genre, this book would be an easy read for you & I think you'll enjoy it.
And thriller lovers, do we need any more reason than the mere fact that it's a thriller on radar?!
