Dear Ava: Enemies-to-Lovers Standalone Romance Kindle Edition
"One of the most beloved romances of 2020." Southern Living
*Amazon Charts Bestseller: Unputdownable Badge
WSJ bestselling author Ilsa Madden-Mills delivers a gripping, enemies-to-lovers, secret admirer, high school romance.
The rich and popular Sharks rule at prestigious, ivy-covered Camden Prep. Once upon a time, I wanted to be part of their world—until they destroyed me.
The last thing I expected was an anonymous love letter from one of them.
Please. I hate every one of those rich jerks for what they did to me.
The question is, which Shark is my secret admirer?
Knox, the scarred quarterback. Dane, his twin brother. Or Chance, the ex who dumped me. . .
Dear Ava, Your eyes are the color of the Caribbean Sea. Wait. That’s stupid.
What I really mean is, you look at me and I feel something REAL.
It’s been ten months since you were here, but I can’t forget you.
I’ve missed seeing you walk down the hall.
I’ve missed you cheering at my football games.
I’ve missed the smell of your hair.
And then everything fell apart the night of the kegger.
Don’t hate me because I’m a Shark.
I just want to make you mine.
Still.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2020Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills is my first favorite read of 2020! This book was absolutely stunning and one I could not put down, no matter how hard I tried. I absolutely did not want this book to end. The characters were written in such a beautiful manner, and the story-line hooked me from the very first sentence and I was wanting more and more to see how everything was going to play out. Ava.. where to start with her? My heart breaks for her at the beginning of this book. What she went through and what you know she's going to have to deal with afterwards, but she surprised me. This girl, she's strong, and she doesn't take any crap. She's been through so much at such a young age, and her character really is admirable. I loved how even though she was terrified to show back up at school, she held her head up high and didn't let anyone see that they were getting to her, and how she pushed Knox with her conversations with him, and throughout their relationship.Knox on the other hand. This one, he's broken but in such a beautiful way. If we didn't get his point of view in this book, I probably wouldn't have loved him as much as I did, but since we did, we get to see so much more than what everyone thinks they know about him. He's not the hard exterior he presents to everyone and he has his own external struggles, and I loved his back and forth struggles he dealt with regarding Ava.This story is beautiful and tragic and just plain perfect. The main characters I couldn't help but fall in love with, including all of their "flaws" and I adored their story, even the bad parts of it. They are broken in their own way, yet are both so strong, and together, they seem invincible. The secondary characters, they were perfect additions to the story, even the ones I despised. I adore Wyatt and Piper and even Dane! They just added so much depth to this story and made it the perfect book that it is. I will say this book is not for the faint of heart. Not only do we deal with some horrible things that happen to Ava, and my heart breaks for her, but also the roller coaster of twists and turns and angst that Ilsa Madden-Mills takes us on in this book. When I finished this book, I had to step back and take a deep breath and come back to reality, it really is a crazy ride you are taken on, but one that is definitely worth it!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2025It was a good read and book. And even though I read it in 2020, now years later I still think about it. And I think that says a lot about the book.
The characters are written so good, they are strong and overcame the bad in thier stories.
It is a good read !
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2020Heartbreaking and romantic all at once, this book is really something special. I've read plenty of books by Ilsa Madden-Mills before, but this has got to be the most powerful and moving one yet. It won't be for everyone - there are WAY too many triggers in it for that - but I absolutely loved it. It's a story of healing, moving forward, and finding love along the way. With strong writing and characters who are multi-faceted, likable, and spark some incredible chemistry, I wholeheartedly recommend it for those looking for an emotional read.
Here's where those triggers come into play. They're a major part of the story so it wouldn't be fair to leave them out of my review. The story is about Ava, a student returning to her prestigious prep school months after being raped by one of the football players. Her memories of the trauma are foggy at best, so she's not sure which of the guys she sees every day is the one who hurt her. Attending school while not being sure who she can trust is problematic for Ava, but she finds the strength and moves forward. Crazy as it is to believe, her biggest ally is Knox, the quarterback of the football team and her ex's best friend, which makes the attraction that sizzles between them oh so troublesome.
I loved this from the start, and it held my attention the whole way through. It's heart-wrenching at times, light at others, and such a great story. Knox is everything you could ask for in a hero, and Ava makes for one strong, vibrant heroine. Their connection kept me reading late into the night. I'll acknowledge that the ending will probably be polarizing, but ultimately I think Madden made the right choice for the characters. This was an easy 5-star rating for me, and I hope we get more from this group of characters. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC via Social Butterfly PR (then purchased it for my collection) and am voluntarily leaving a review of this emotional romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2024”Dear Ava" was an absolutely incredible read. From the moment I picked it up, I was hooked. The story had me laughing out loud and crying in equal measure. The characters were all amazing, each adding depth and warmth to the story. Ava’s journey was deeply moving, and I loved how she was never alone, always supported by those around her. Tyler, as Ava's great little brother, was especially endearing. The moments between Ava and Knox were both heartwarming and heart-wrenching, making it a rollercoaster of emotions that I couldn’t get enough of. I was genuinely sad to finish the book, and I wish I could give it a higher rating because it truly deserves it and more. Highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dear Ava
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first started this book. But I have read previous stories by this author so I thought I would give it a try. It was griping, moving, emotional and exceptionally well written. I loved every chapter, page, sentence, word. It was so very well written about a sensitive topic. But it brought this reader on a wonderful journey of love, healing and bad asserary. Would 1000% recommend you read this moving emotional wonderful story. You won't regret it. I know these characters will stay with me for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the reason why I started reading Ilsa Madden-Mills's books!
This book was so exhilarating. The book is categorised as New Adult but both the main characters, Knox and Ava were very mature for their age. Both of them had soul wrenching pasts and their characters had depth.
I usually find it difficult to read books that contain the topic of assault, bullying, depression, substantial abuse or deep mental trauma but this book was so good that I couldn't stop wanting for more. (I re-read this book at least 3 times) The book was romantic and at the same time it was filled with angst and tragedy.
"I've learned to be patient. Everything arrives when it's supposed to."
Ava was such a strong female character. She was an orphan and was so alone. She loved her brother fiercely. She worked a lot for a scholarship to one of the most prestigious schools, Camden Prep. After what she had been through, she deserved her happily ever after.
“Kissing him is like free falling into a hot fire, and maybe I should be afraid of this, but I crave the way his chest burns against mine, the way it ignites every atom inside me.”
Knox was an amazing character who had many "jock friends"and was the leader of the Sharks. He cared a lot about his twin brother Dane, just like Ava cared for her brother.
Knox was so protective towards Ava, this made me see his soft side. He was so swoon worthy!
"No matter the road you take, it doesn't matter if it's beautiful or ugly, hard or smooth, paved or pitted with ruts- it's your road to take. What matters is how it ends."
“And someday, someday, I’ll have a beautiful road, smooth and easy and perfect.”
Knox wanted Ava and was fascinated with her since the moment he first saw her with one of his friends (who was responsible for hurting Ava)
"He won't take his eyes off me. I watch with fascination as Knox bites his lower lip, digging in deep, so hard I expect to see blood bloom there."
Ava was away from school for 10 months due to the trauma she faced and now she's back to prove to the person who abused her, that whatever happened with her did not completely destroy her. Her scars were faded but she really didn't forget what happened.
Knox was the star quarterback who was known for not kissing girls on the lips and had a scarred soul. Both of them were so intense. Their chemistry and the development of a new relationship between them was so emotional.
This book was captivating and the characters were hard to forget.
Ilsa Madden-Mills definitely is one of my favourite authors now! This book was about romance but I really liked the fact that she didn't entirely focus on the romance but also explained the painful and haunting pasts that both the characters experienced on a daily basis. Overall it was beautifully written and I would definitely recommend reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars So emotional and so strong!
I read so many good things about this one that I couldn't wait any longer to start this one.
It was so much more emotional.then I expected, it was so special! But to be honest I kind of knew from the get go who was the bad guy! I felt it coming and I just felt so horrified! Because people truly do such horrible things.
I expected a bit more of those SA letters than just the one. But it was also very special!
I'm aldo very glad she was so so strong to pull through all that and not let anything get her down! My heart broke when she gave her mom what she wanted, but on the otherside I got why.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lee s2
O final me ganhou demais. Lee fez absolutamente TUDO certo.
é a cereja do bolo pra mim.

5.0 out of 5 stars In love.
I practically ate the book, I couldn't stop reading it. I'm more eager to know more about Ava and Knox.
My first book of the month and I don’t regret choosing this one. Definitely checking more books from Ilsa.
