Dear Ava by Ilsa Madden-Mills is my first favorite read of 2020! This book was absolutely stunning and one I could not put down, no matter how hard I tried. I absolutely did not want this book to end. The characters were written in such a beautiful manner, and the story-line hooked me from the very first sentence and I was wanting more and more to see how everything was going to play out. Ava.. where to start with her? My heart breaks for her at the beginning of this book. What she went through and what you know she's going to have to deal with afterwards, but she surprised me. This girl, she's strong, and she doesn't take any crap. She's been through so much at such a young age, and her character really is admirable. I loved how even though she was terrified to show back up at school, she held her head up high and didn't let anyone see that they were getting to her, and how she pushed Knox with her conversations with him, and throughout their relationship.Knox on the other hand. This one, he's broken but in such a beautiful way. If we didn't get his point of view in this book, I probably wouldn't have loved him as much as I did, but since we did, we get to see so much more than what everyone thinks they know about him. He's not the hard exterior he presents to everyone and he has his own external struggles, and I loved his back and forth struggles he dealt with regarding Ava.This story is beautiful and tragic and just plain perfect. The main characters I couldn't help but fall in love with, including all of their "flaws" and I adored their story, even the bad parts of it. They are broken in their own way, yet are both so strong, and together, they seem invincible. The secondary characters, they were perfect additions to the story, even the ones I despised. I adore Wyatt and Piper and even Dane! They just added so much depth to this story and made it the perfect book that it is. I will say this book is not for the faint of heart. Not only do we deal with some horrible things that happen to Ava, and my heart breaks for her, but also the roller coaster of twists and turns and angst that Ilsa Madden-Mills takes us on in this book. When I finished this book, I had to step back and take a deep breath and come back to reality, it really is a crazy ride you are taken on, but one that is definitely worth it!

Such a beautiful story! Must read!
This was so different from what I usually read but exactly what I needed! The book starts with Ava waking up alone in the woods after being sexually assaulted by one of the jocks from her school. The rape happens off-screen, but I was instantly hit with so many emotions. That opening chapter was really intense! Fast forward 9 months and Ava is back in school for senior year. She doesn’t remember who attacked her and is being blamed for what happened and accused of lying by her peers. Ava is a survivor. She hasn’t had an easy life even before her assault, but she just continues being strong and courageous. She is determined to not let what happened to her shape the rest of her life. Knox is the leader of the Sharks, a group of richest and most popular students. But despite his broody front, there is kindness inside him like no other. Knox was so different from my usual book boyfriends. So sweet and romantic! I was swooning so hard!! He was so supportive of Ava and wanted to help her in any way he could. And underneath, he was also as damaged as Ava. Their connection and building relationship were so beautiful to read. They help each other and they both grow through the story so much. They had different paths to go through in order to heal fully but when they finally got together again it was so wonderful and heart-melting! That ending made me smile for days!!
