DEATH IN MIND; A mind bending psychological thriller with a terrific twist:: The DCI Jamie Carver Series, Book Five Kindle Edition
Five minutes before she killed herself, Sarah Brooke had never had a suicidal thought in her life
"Clever, twisty, creepy. Made me so paranoid I was scared to answer the phone." (5* Amazon Reviewer)
A woman steps off the platform in front of a train. On a lonely road at night, a young man steers his Porsche into a tree. Tragic suicides, clearly. Or are they?
When enquiries show neither victim had reason to kill themselves, DCI Jamie Carver faces a conundrum. Can someone be programmed to take their own life? And if so, can they also be programmed to murder? These are the questions the detective must answer, and quickly, before more die. But how do you do that when the person pulling the strings may also be pulling yours? And how do you stay safe when someone is targeting you for murder, and even they don’t know it?
The fifth book in the DCI Jamie Carver Series, Death In Mind charts new territory as Jamie Carver grapples with the concept of ‘unconscious murder’, and comes up against a killer whose methods are not only unique, but who also knows what the questions will be, before they are even asked. The story delves into the realms of what, to the uninitiated, seems like 'mind control', but which those practised in the skills know is no such thing, layering puzzle on puzzle as Carver and his partner, Jess Greylake, struggle to understand not just what is happening around them, but who is making it happen, and why.
During a thirty-year police career, Robert F Barker worked in and around some of the Northwest UK’s grittiest towns and cities. As a senior detective, he led investigations into all kinds of major crime including, murder, armed robbery, serious sex crime and people/drug trafficking. Whilst commanding firearms and disorder incidents, he learned what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. His stories are grounded in the reality of police work, but remain exciting, suspenseful, and with the sort of twists and turns crime-fiction readers love.

About the author

Born in Liverpool, England, Robert F Barker served thirty years as a police officer and detective, most of it working in and around some of Northwest UK's grittiest towns and cities. He writes stories that are dark and edgy, but credible enough for the reader to believe they may be based on some sort of reality, which of course they sometimes are. (Names changed to protect the innocent.. etc.). During his service, he learned that no matter where people live, whatever their position in society, they are never far from places where darkness dwells. Those places may be inner city sink estates where drugs are dealt and violence rules, or leafy suburbs where neat gardens and lace curtains conceal the sort of evil that no one ever imagines - until the worst happens.
As a former Senior Investigating Officer and Firearms Incident Commander, he knows all about the pressures police officers face, as well as what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. Given his background, his stories are as authentic a portrayal of crime and policing as can be found anywhere in today's crime fiction.
He splits his writing-time between his family home in Cheshire, UK, and the beautiful island of Cyprus, where he gains inspiration for a series of Cyprus-based thrillers which he intends will compliment his crime novels.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe killer is a real fiend. The psychological mind control he engaged in is SCARY; reality without actual awareness! What IF someone were using these same skills; just hasn't caught the attention of the justice system. Perhaps, matching similar occurances hasn't been considered because like the plot each death has been different from the last, no two alike. Catching the attention of a concerned citizen -- how to go about explaining the subliminal theories, is the question. PottsvillePA_08192023.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA good story very dry at times. I hate the ending. That thread just won't go away and I'm tired of it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2019Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe absorption in this entry in the series, echoed that of Carver, as he determines to prove the villain is nothing but murderous, greedy sociopath. Yeah, he's smart, resourceful, clever...but Carver is more than up to the task. Once the method is understood, appreciated, Carver's learning curve increases quickly. And that is not a bad thing, except for the culprit. I appreciate the level of competence Mr Barker brings to his writing. His law enforcement craftsmanship AND his capabilities as a writer. Well done, sir!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2019Format: KindleAs a former U.S. Army Military Policeman and owner of a Private Detective Agency, I always enjoy reading crime procedurals. When they are well-written and well-researched in jurisdictions I am not familiar with (though they are similar, police work is not the same in the U.S. and the U.K.) I enjoy learning ways in which they differ. It is especially enjoyable to read books in areas I consider my expertise. In this case, I am a certified clinical hypnotherapist and Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Even though in Robert’s Preface Note in “Death in Mind” he says that he has taken some writer’s liberties with the science (or pseudo-science, depending on whom you ask) that he represents in the book, he has made a fair (if somewhat exaggerated) representation of the power a skilled practitioner has in influencing another person’s mind.
The book itself is an exceptional psychological thriller pitting a brilliant criminal mind against the best the British Police establishment has to offer. The story is strong, based on aspects of the mind most people do not understand, the characters are realistic, and he does not force the dialogue. As a reviewer, I do not like to provide a detailed synopsis of a book; I feel that is the job of the author. Robert F. Barker has produced an outstanding read that keeps the reader enthralled from start to finish.
Though this is Book 5 of The DCI Jamie Carver Series, it works as a stand-alone tome. Though I have not read any of the previous four books, it did not impact my enjoyment in this story or the flow of the book. I am looking forward to reading the other works by Mr. Barker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing how a single person can control people's minds.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseEvery time I read Robert's DCI Carver books I get into trouble, I start reading and then can't put them down until I've finished them.
Death In Mind is no exception, Jamie and Jess take on a case that is marginal at the very least. As the storyline unfolds it becomes a labyrinth of twists and turns that makes you look at one person's ability to control individuals minds on a scale that cannot be envisaged.
Brilliant read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind, blown!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOoh, I do love a good book that messes with your head, and Death in Mind fits the bill perfectly. It scared the merry heck out of me in places, and I had to put it down once or twice. Just the idea that someone can use Derren Brown-style psychology and subtle use of language to perpetrate horrible crimes, is terrifying. It's made me a little bit paranoid, actually, so thanks for that, Mr Barker. Seriously though, this is a cracking read. And I'm intrigued to know what's going to happen next with Jamie Carver, Jess Greylake, and ... well, no spoilers. Truly gripping stuff.
