Death Outside The Oath: A gripping crime novel, full of mystery and suspense Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

Who said retirement was easy?
After 25 years of dedicated service, one ill-fated meeting over an unsolved missing person’s case sees London police officer JACK GRIFFIN forced into resignation, effective immediately.
Now, with more free time than he had planned, Jack takes on the role of lead investigator as a newly-assigned Met Police Cold Case Team puts him in their crosshairs.
The case? Patricia Lucas disappeared from Notting Hill five years ago and Griffin was the first officer on scene. Fifteen minutes into interviewing the family, he was pushed out the door by the same man who just witnessed Griffin’s retirement papers. And Patricia was never found.
Launching out on his own, Jack follows a lead to the sleepy castle town of Arundel in the south of England. There, he is called to test his investigative skills in a way that he never did as a career beat cop.
Out of his element, Jack must learn how to become an investigator as Cold Case Team ramps up their attention on him.
Each clue draws Jack deeper into a mystery with all signs pointing back to the one person he has no desire to ever see again: his old Chief Superintendent, the man who squeezed him out of the force.
Trapped between corruption, gangsters, and the unexpected arrival of Patricia’s sister hell bent on revenge, Jack might be in over his head. He must use all of his experience and skills before the lead suspect skips town and the case is buried forever.
Death Outside the Oath is the first in the thrilling Jack Griffin series by retired officer Phil Eastwood.

Phil Eastwood grew up telling daring tales of detectives to his children around the campfire, and that love of storytelling never went away.

Having served as a police officer for over 35 years in London and Canada, earning his Master of Art in Leadership and Training (MA) and being a Certified Speaking Professional (CSP), Phil is now using his experience to craft thrilling tales of murder and mystery.

He loves underdogs, and good people winning despite impossible odds.

That is what his first series about Jack Griffin, is all about. The first book in the series, Death Outside The Oath, Griffin, a police constable forced into early retirement, finds himself re-examining the cold case of missing teen Patricia Lucas, where he was the first on the scene five years ago.

Under the guise of some down time with an old friend, Griffin follows the trail to a sleepy-seeming castle town in Sussex and is called to test his investigative skills in a way that he never did on the job.

Griffin believes that he has everything under control until he discovers Patricia’s sister Cynthia has come to town to exact her own revenge.

He quickly discovers that retirement doesn’t suit him after all and must find the evidence he needs before the killer and their accomplices bury the case forever.

Phil hopes his readers will discover their own power and find a sense of personal growth with each Jack Griffin novel.

Phil lives in Vancouver with his wife, Karen, and their golden retriever, Henry.

When he’s not writing, he can be found hiking the mountains around their home, reading good books, hunting for a new favorite coffee shop, or at the movies.

I recently had the opportunity to pick up "Death Outside the Oath," and I took it with me on vacation. It's the perfect book for lounging by the lake -- smooth as lapping waves.

If it's true that authors write what they know, Phil Eastwood obviously knows quite a lot about policing and public houses in England, luxury cars (and speeding therein -- there was a very exciting car chase!), lifelong friendships, Lord of the Rings, and... project boards!?

The amateur (retired police officer) detective in the tale, Jack Griffin (a really likeable central protagonist), seems to gain confidence as the story progresses, in real time; as does Eastwood as the author.

    A good read.

What an enjoyable book..!!!! No gratuitous sex or violence (not that I mind that kind of thing in a book), just a great story which fairly romps along at a terrific pace. Looks like there could be another 2 books coming shortly...certainly hope so. Mr. Eastwood is good at this writing malarky.

Having read Handcuffs to Handshakes, I was interested to see how this author would treat a novel. I enjoyed this book. Easy to read and a plot that kept my interest.
