About the authors
The author of more than fifty books, Sandra’s work has received many awards, nominations, and accolades, including a starred review-PW Pick from Publishers Weekly, and multiple starred reviews and Best Book selections from Library Journal. Other awards include the Historical Novel Society’s Editor’s Choice, two Christy Awards nominations, a BookPage Top Pick for Romance, and inclusion on Booklist’s Top Ten Inspirational Books of the Year list.
A dedicated foodie, Sandra cooks through the topic and location of every book she writes. In addition, she collects vintage glass and serviceware in her free time, loves long walks with her husband, and Sunday Suppers with her growing family.
My new novel, a small haunted story of Emily Bronte and her sisters, called THE MAN IN THE STONE COTTAGE, is in production and will be on sale September 16 2025 but available for pre-order now. It is about Emily, Charlotte and Anne's struggle to publish their writing, find stability and uphold each other -- and Emily's intense relationship with a shepherd in a stone cottage on the moor who no one else has ever seen. Meanwhile, my novel THE BOY IN THE RAIN is available in paperback, Kindle and audiobook read by English actor Philip Battley. Set in Edwardian England 1903, it is a love story between two men, a shy young artist and a rising socialist speaker, as they struggle to build a life together against personal obstacles and the dangers of prosecution under the gross indecency laws.
I am also scribbling away on three or four other novels.
CLAUDE & CAMILLE: A NOVEL OF CLAUDE MONET is still selling here and in translation in Germany and Italy. It's the story of Monet in his 20s and 30s as he struggles to sell his work and manage his love for the beautiful, elusive Camille who would die young and forever remain his muse.
My other novels MARRYING MOZART, THE PLAYERS, THE PHYSICIAN OF LONDON AND NICHOLAS COOKE all continue to find readers. They were translated into several languages and MARRYING MOZART was adapted into an opera.
I am a recipient of an American Book Award.
Thanks for visiting!
Here’s a little about me. Before becoming an author, I enjoyed a twenty-year acting career playing diverse characters from Shakespearean heroines on stage to starring roles in daytime TV dramas and characters in Disney made-for-TV movies. It felt like a natural extension of my acting to create fiction, and I hope you'll enjoy my novels. Over half a million copies have been sold in seven countries.
My bestselling "Thornleigh Saga" series is set in 16th-century England and follows a middle-class family’s rise through three generations and three tumultuous Tudor reigns. ("Riveting Tudor drama" - USA Today). I’m also the author of acclaimed thrillers.
My new novel is THE DEADLY TRADE, a murder mystery, available in September 2023. I hope you’ll love it!
I’m a writing coach, too. Through my master classes and video courses I’ve helped launch many writers on the path to published success. For details, please see my website: https://www.barbarakyle.com/ If you're writing a novel, check out my book PAGE-TURNER. It's packed with information and inspiration to help you craft a book that excites publishers and thrills readers.
My husband and I live in Guelph, a university city in southern Ontario where we enjoy its riverside walks, vibrant arts community, and good-neighborliness.
Happy reading!

Gillian Bagwell’s richly detailed historical novels bring to vivid life England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Venus in Winter, based on the first forty years of the life of the formidable four-times widowed dynast Bess of Hardwick, begins with Bess’s introduction to the court of Henry VIII just as the king weds Anne of Cleves. Bess quickly learns to navigate the treacherous waters, and survives the turbulent reigns of five Tudor monarchs to become of the most powerful women in the history of England
The Darling Strumpet puts the reader smack in the tumultuous world of seventeenth century London, charting Nell Gwynn’s meteoric rise from the grimy slums to triumph as a beloved comic actress, through the cataclysmic years of the last plague epidemic and the Great Fire of 1666, to the licentious court and the arms of the king.
"The King’s Mistress" (U.S. title "The September Queen") is the first fictional accounting of the extraordinary real-life adventure of Jane Lane, who risked all to help the young Charles II escape after the disastrous Battle of Worcester in 1651, saving his life and the future of the English monarchy.
Gillian uses her years of experience in theatre an actress, director, and producer to help authors give effective public readings, through workshops and private coaching.
Her life-long fascination with British history and dedication to research infuse her novels with a compelling evocation of time and place, and provide fodder for her non-fiction writing, including articles on “Frost Fairs on the River Thames”
(http://www.lorisreadingcorner.com/2011/01/guest-post-giveaway-gillian-bagwell-the-darling-strumpet.html), “The Royal Miracle: The Biggest What-If in English History,”
(http://www.historyinanhour.com/2012/07/14/charles-ii-royal-miracle), and “1660: The Year of the Restoration of Theatre.” Gillian blogged her research adventures for The Darling Strumpet (http://www.nellgwynn.blogspot.com) and The September Queen, including the day-by-day events of Charles II’s dramatic escape after the Battle of Worcester (http://www.theroyalmiracle.blogspot.com).

Debra cut her teeth on the Bookhouse Books, which created a nagging longing to live in a land of castles and wear flowing gowns and exquisite headdresses. Though life kept her busy, she was eventually able to do so vicariously through the characters of her books.
Her first published novel, The Companion of Lady Holmeshire, is set in early Victorian England. Emma, a former servant girl, is chosen as companion to The Countess of Holmeshire and dragged along into polite society where she is sure to receive a rude reception.
Debra's work-in-progress, For the Skylark, is on the back burner but simmering slowly. She has spent more time on the development and running of a multi-author blog, English Historical Fiction Authors. The group posts a daily article on British history and has a weekly historical fiction giveaway. History lovers join us with their morning tea at http://englishhistoryauthors.blogspot.com.
Shortly after the first anniversary of the blog, an author suggested the creation of a book composed of select posts. A year later, to celebrate the second anniversary on September 23, 2013, Castles, Customs, and Kings: True Tales by English Historical Fiction Authors, edited by Debra and the late M.M. Bennetts, was released. Volume II will be released on September 23, 2015, and we hope to continue the series.
You can chat with Debra about history and historical fiction and meet her author friends on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/212369672160560 and at her Goodreads group, Historical Info for Historical Fiction Readers.
Debra is the President of the M.M. Bennetts Award for Historical Fiction Association which honors the author of an outstanding novel each year with a $500 USD prize. Winners are announced at the annual Historical Novel Society Conference. Learn more at http://mmbaward.blogspot.com.

and finally,
Desmoulins, a story of the French Revolution
Katherine Pym likes history, especially 17th century England, specifically London during the 1660's. The decade is so exciting. It is filled with human interest stories as the people adjust from one government to another, and all their changing rules and regulations.
Another era is the French Revolution, and she has written a novel about Camille Desmoulins, a popular pamphleteer and journalist.
History, poetry, music and horses fairly sums it up.
Educated at Boston University and the University of St. Andrews, M.M. Bennetts is a specialist in early 19th century British history and the Napoleonic wars as well as a keen cross country and dressage rider. Before turning to writing novels full-time, Bennetts was a French translator and a longstanding book critic for the Pulitzer-prize winning newspaper, 'The Christian Science Monitor'.
Both Bennetts' historical novels, 'May 1812' (a Harper-Collins Authonomy Gold Medalist) and 'Of Honest Fame' are based on over twenty years' research and a bibliography of over an hundred and fifty works. Though that's just the reading.
Playing and practicing the music of the age--Beethoven, Field, Schubert--is one of the perks, as has been learning to clean and shoot a flintlock used at Waterloo, (they are so beautiful the guns of 200 years ago!) visiting the battlefields, studying the furniture and homes, eating the food the English soldiers were served in Spain 200 years ago, listening to the family stories of the descendants of Spanish guerrillas who fought alongside Wellington and his men in Spain...they each made me promise I would tell their story. I gave them my word.
So a third novel, 'Or Fear of Peace', set amidst the turmoil of the final drive against Napoleon in Europe, is now underway and scheduled for publication next year.
In the meantime--to keep out of trouble (ha ha)--Bennetts has contributed to and edited 'Castles, Customs, and Kings: True Tales by English Historical Fiction Authors' a compilation of the best of the English Historical Fiction Authors' historical essays from the first year of their existence.
The author lives in England.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2020So I just started reading this book, and I thoroughly enjoy the fact that it is a bunch of small stories, making it a great book for a quick pick up and read session. However, although I am only a few stories in, I am just slightly let down in the material covered. There has been a little bit of repeated material, and I very well could just not be at the good parts yet, so I am going to solider on. I am still learning some history, but not learning anything really exciting or shocking yet that I haven't already had some basic knowledge of. I still highly recommend, as an Anglophile this book was too good to pass up. It makes my heart happy even holding it! So buy it ok?
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2013This is a book with a unique format that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is a series of essays or blog posts on British history starting with Caesar's landing at Brittania, each by a different author. The writers are British history experts who pen historical novels, and each essay is on a topic that fascinated them while pursuing info about a particular subject. Since each entry is self-contained, this book is just great for a quick read to distract yourself, or a lazy, rainy afternoon when you can just immerse yourself. I found it to be a great comfort to me while I stayed by my mother's bed in the hospital during her recent serious illness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure Gold
This is a book of essays by primarily Historical Fiction writers. I have been reading historical fiction for decades and quite a lot of the contributors for years. However, some are new to me. Note to self: make time for more reading.
I have been following a blog for awhile now: English Historical Fiction Authors Blog. Someone came up with utterly brilliant job of collating articles, essays, and blog posts into print. When I first heard about it, I thought it was brilliant. However, I was unprepared for the book itself. First of all, it is quite large (I now own a print and Kindle version. I'm old. ebooks are easier on my wrists.). It's beautifully and professionally produced and is an absolute treasure trove of information.
If you read history or historical fiction, write, or merely dabble at both, you'll want this book! Not only are the essays so very interesting but there is quite a lot of information about the authors themselves (websites, booklists). I highly recommend it.
