*****(5 Stars) The fast track to creating order out of chaos - This very helpful and well written book appeared like a life jacket in a stormy sea. I was drowning in clutter! My life was disorganised, inefficient, too chaotic and downright untidy. The book has made a tremendous difference to the quality of my life. I can understand why I created and accumulated so much clutter. Once I'd decided to bring order into the chaos, the benefits flow into every aspect of life. It really is a cleansing, healing process and I can't recommend the book highly enough. Beran Parry
*****(5 Stars) Awesome guide! I will be using these techniques for years to come:)- As a self-proclaimed hoarder, I have always needed a bit of help staying organized. When I was younger I could count on my mom to help me go through things, but now that I'm an adult I decided I need to become more self-starting. This guide was exactly what I needed and will be a resource that I continue to refer to as I work through the rest of my house. Sara M.
*****(5 Stars) TOP NOTCH BOOK. - This is the first book on "Clutter" that I have read (and I have read a few), that touched on DIGITAL CLUTTER and which actually got me to FINALLY clean up my PC. The chapter on getting rid of stuff with "Emotional" or sentimental value was outstanding. Here again, I had shoe boxes full of old letters and cards, which I really struggled to let go. It wasn't easy. Specific chapters in this book really helped me where previous "Clutter" books had not. Dano Maxwell

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2016The book is interesting, but I am an invalid and we are running three businesses from a 1000-square-foot house. Anybody who thinks I can declutter in two weeks doesn't live in the real world. I rather doubt that ANY confirmed clutterer could declutter in two weeks. My grandfather built shelf sets after shelf sets for my grandmother, but she still managed to keep the area around her favorite chair in a constant state of clutter. Our handyman is now building a ten-drawer chest to sit beside my chair in the living room, to replace the wooden file cabinet I have been using there. I am starting out with the firm intention of keeping the area uncluttered henceforth, but don't hold your breath. This is the fifth piece of storage furniture Manny has made for me. They all fill up in a hurry. I can't figure out where I put all that stuff before we got our wonderful handyman. And most of it I CANNOT throw away. We do follow the principle of repurpose and recycle;
it's a rare week when we don't make at least one trip to the thrift store to drop off, and our four large trash, compost, and recycle bins are always full when the trucks come to pick up the contents. So where does it all come from? Darned if I know. Anyhow this book was interesting, and if you're just starting out you can read it and start out right. Begin by picking up all those clothes that are all over the floor. Hang them up, wash and dry them and hang them up, send them to the dry cleaners and hang them up after your retrieve them, and QUIT PUTTING CLOTHES ON THE FLOOR. That was okay when you were fifteen, but it isn't okay now. And get rid of those stuffed animals that are taller than you are that Dear Hubby won at the fair for you when you had just started dating. And wash the darn dishes. Get him to dry them and put them away. I have no suggestions if DH has been in both the Marine Reserve and the Navy Reserve and insists on keeping both sets of dress uniform on a chair in the bedroom and every shoe he has ever worn since he reached his present size in a box beside the bed, and will not let you hang up the uniforms or throw away the dead shoes. One of my daughters has an EX-husband who does that. (Some of these suggestions came from me rather than from the book.)

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2015As a self-proclaimed hoarder, I have always needed a bit of help staying organized. When I was younger I could count on my mom to help me go through things, but now that I'm an adult I decided I need to become more self-starting. This guide was exactly what I needed and will be a resource that I continue to refer to as I work through the rest of my house. I skipped around a little from the order the book suggests because my two problem areas in my portion of a shared apartment are my closet and my unpacked boxes. I used to have a larger apartment, and despite having left these items in boxes for 6 months, it's been hard to go through everything! This book finally gave me the push I needed and I used my roomie to help me evaluate my clothes more objectively. I knew that I had certain sentimental attachments to things, but hadn't really considered other reasons or what that may mean about my personality. This book goes through all of that at the beginning and talks about how clutter in your family room versus your bathroom can speak to different psychological states. In some ways, it seems like a "chicken or the egg?" argument where depression, anxiety, etc. may be both causing and caused by clutter, so tackling the clutter can help to break you out of that loop! I know I feel much better after giving away clothing that wasn't fitting well, and I can actually find my favorites easily! I always keep my closet in rainbow order, which sounds highly organized, right? But, since I was holding on to dozens of shirts that I never wore, I still could not find anything easily. I already had most documents and files digital, but I thought about the suggestion to scan and shred for a personal problem. Basically, I am an artist and fashionista (who studied both in college), and I have a bad habit of saving magazine clippings. I literally had boxes, and boxes, and when I made myself go through them I realized I could not even see why I'd kept most! So once I sorted the small percent I wanted to keep I just photographed them on my cell phone and uploaded them to a blog. Now they are organized by theme and I can access them easily for projects, but I don't have boxes of junk sitting around! I plan to jointly go through the kitchen and other common areas with my roomie next, and then in the long term focus on the suggestions for budgeting, shopping lists, less impulse shopping, etc. This is definitely a book that you can continue using. Plus, if you are as cluttered as I am, will probably need to implement in steps, which I might add are laid out very neatly in this book! I highly recommend this!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2015I really like this declutter book. It is a no-nonsense method for organizing your house, seriously, in about 2 weeks. I think if you take the time off work as the authors suggest it would be fairly simple for most people to accomplish this task in two weeks. I especially like the lists, such as a list of things that you may have kept because of personal emotional attachments. You could, for instance, get rid of your grown children's favorite toys from when they were little. They could be given to a friend or family member or to a charity, because oftentimes children's toys are not used to the point of damage.
The method, essentially, breaks down this gargantuan task into manageable sections. If you subdivide your job into portions, it becomes much more reasonable. I plan to do this with my own house in the near future.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2017Well put to together. It kept me interested all the way through the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2017It's really hard to put where your stress comes from. Often times we make plans to do something but then you forget them after a while. And it leaves behind a trail of clutter just piling up. The more it piles, less you actually end up doing anything. I actually manage my time with to do list apps, but still have small things undone because other things come up everyday and you delay the old tasks.
The author goes into most common aspects and suggests possible fixes. While it isn't as easy as "just throw it away/give it away if you don't need it" like she says, as I read I found things I could do and some places I could improve in my own way. So it was helpful and a good read.
