Deprivation: Book One in The Deprivation Trilogy Kindle Edition
Sick of the constant betrayal, I’ve sworn off men for good.
But there’s no cure for my attraction to Dr. Nicholas Barnes.
I’m a magnet for egotistical playboys. It’s been years since I’ve let anyone in.
Pursuing me is merely a challenge for this overconfident ladies’ man.
What else could this handsome, arrogant surgeon want with me?
I have great friends and a job in the ER I love.
A good night’s rest is what I need. One little sleeping pill couldn’t hurt. Could it?
But this irresistible doctor even seduces me in my dreams.
It’s a delicious temptation I don’t want to stop.
Yet what happens when the line between fantasy and truth becomes blurred?
When you can no longer live with the constant deprivation?
This man is beautiful. He’s charming.
And he could be the love of my life or my complete destruction.

About the author

About the Author
Born and raised in Virginia, LM Fox currently lives in a suburb of Richmond with her husband, three kids, and a chocolate lab.
Her pastimes are traveling to new and favorite places, trying new foods, a swoony book with either a good cup of tea or coffee, margaritas on special occasions, and watching her kids participate in a variety of sports.
She has spent the majority of her adult life working in emergency medicine and her books are written in this setting. Her main characters are typically in the medical field, EMS, fire, and/or law enforcement. She enjoys writing angsty, contemporary romance starring headstrong, independent heroines you can’t help but love and the hot alpha men who fall hard for them.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDeprivation by L.M Fox is one I've read before but this was a reread for the release of Deprived no more so I wanted to reread this one and the other books in the series then realized I never reviewed this one, so without further explanation lol this is book one in the deprivation series. It is Nick and Kat's story. They both work in the medical field which I love because as do I! and have also been hurt by significant others before (also as have I).
Kat is a Physician's assistant, or PA for short. She is a wonderful friend, remains free but is always willing to help. As great of a girl she is, she seems to only date losers and so she's decided to be done with that!
Nick is an Orthopedic Surgeon who has just moved to the hospital Kat is working at. He is newly divorced and that has left him thinking he would never find that love his parents always had. The sadness he feels tugged at my heartstrings the worst!
L.M Fox wrote this in a way we got past glimpses to help us understand the characters and why they were being the way they were, when Kat and Nick met it wasn't love at first sight but the attraction was there. Letting go of the past can definitely be hard!
Character development is great, tension and angst are so good! Can't wait to share the rest of this series with you all, don't sleep on this! Pick up book one if you haven't started yet!!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThank goodness I bought the box set because right when I finished this book I needed to get on to the second asap. L.M. Fox has the anticipation cranked up in high Deprivation. She built tension slowly and at times I felt almost too slowly. Then, Nick and Kat have this moment and I was cheering and high fiving. I just know I am going to love them. I'm invested in them. BTW... when I got to the part where I understood why the book is titled Deprivation I thought, chef's kiss. It's perfect.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI wanted to love this book. It sounded great! BUT, it is way too long and there is way to much time spent on dreams and non communication between the protagonists. I found myself saying, this is stupid. Nobody acts like that! That being said, I am invested in Nick and Kat and I intend on reading the other 2 books if that is what it takes to see if they end up together. The author could have left half the book off and it would have been better.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseDeprivation is book 1 of the Deprivation Trilogy which is a beautiful slow burn between the two main characters Nick and Kat. There were so many aspects of this story that surprised me and it’s hard to believe that Layla is a new Author. She had strategically placed flashbacks that dropped Easter eggs to help you understand all the characters and how their lives intertwine.
The dual POV was chefs kiss. Reading both Kat and Nick’s POV on situations and reading how each sees the other responding kept me wanting to turn the page - I couldn’t put it down! I absolutely love how they work in a hospital as it brings back memories to the short time period I worked in an ER!!
There is so much depth to this story that cannot be relayed through this review (as I do not want to give ANYTHING away).
Layla has something special here with Nick, Kat and all these secondary characters.

Kat is a PA (Physician's assistant), she is carefree, a wonderful friend and always willing to help. She, however, sucks at choosing a good man. She has only had relationships with douchebags. This has caused her to swear off getting into another relationship.
Nick is an Orthopedic Surgeon who has just moved to the hospital Kat is working at. He just walked out of a divorce that has left him thinking he would never find that love his parents always had.
When these two meet, it is not love at first sight but they are quite curious about each other. There is even chemistry when they work together. But can they both let go of their past to even have a personal relationship?
I enjoyed how the author often gave past and present views of the characters, especially Kat's past so we can understand why she feels the way she does about men.
Book one ends with a cliffhanger, and I can't wait to see what will happen in book 2...all the sexual tension between these two will burn them up soon.
Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Entertaining, Original, Page-turner, Wonderful characters
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTwo medical people, both of whom have been hurt in different ways. Theirs is not an immediate attraction. One is a friendly outgoing PA in emergency, Kat who has been put down by the men in her life so many times, she's not even willing to try anymore. Don't get me wrong, she's not anti-men, she has heaps of men friends, but that's all they are. That's not the impression Dr Nick gets though. Coming from a very bad end to a marriage and a nasty divorce, he's not expecting to be attracted to the guy magnet he thinks Kat is. It's a slow burn, so don't expect hot and heavy.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOmg! MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!
First of all the chapters jump between different character POVs, but also between present day, and the past (years prior). I typically hate books like this because it’s very hard for me to keep up, but the flashbacks weren’t hard to follow at all.
Also there are several moments that leave you just clinging to the edge of your seat for more. Definitely a book you don’t want to put down. When it came time for me to put it down it was very hard.
5 stars.. can’t wait to read the rest of the series/trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have discovered a new author! And loving it - couldn’t put this one down. Authentic characters, the whole series has been a joy. The story line was excellent with lots of intrigue and suspense and twists that made me gasp! The chemistry between Kat and Nick was intense and being over 3 books, there was good time to develop their depth of character and the story. High recommend (and all the others) Enjoy 😉💕

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! Could not put this book down
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI read this book (and the other 2 books in the trilogy) last December on Kindle Unlimited and I have just purchased this book as it is 99p on Kindle - absolute steal!
I decided to read this book as I had seen it mentioned on a book group and had heard so many good things about it - and let me tell you, it didn't disappoint!
From the minute I opened this book I honestly couldn't put it down. I loved the writing style and the easy flow of the writing, story and character introductions. It reminded me a lot of T L Swan which is a huge positive for me as I love T L Swan and all of her books.
I enjoyed being introduced to Kat and her very relatable and down to earth character. The reader is shown all of her past problems and her insecurities, yet she is still so positive, kind and lovable. I find her character inspiring. Then we get to meet the deliciously brooding Nick Barnes and his equally delicious 'rival' Sebastian Lee. Again, the reader is shown how Nick Barnes has his own demons to deal with and this only makes me love him even more.
I'm a sucker for an enemies to lovers style romance and we definitely get that at the start of this book with Kat and Nick. I loved the back and forth, 'are they aren't they' with the two of them and just when I think they have finally made it we get a final plot twist at the end of the book.
The writing is crammed full of medical terms, anecdotes and real to life situations. I absolutely love this as even though it is clearly fiction, the reader gets this sense of reality by being able to relate to or even understand the realistic content of the book. I also got such a feel for all of the different emotions that the author portrayed so well.
This book was such an easy read and left me running to read the next book in the trilogy.
I would 100% recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a cliffhanger!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI realized as soon as I began Deprivation that the author was playing the long game. She was setting the stage, developing the characters, and building the tension - all in the name of a future payoff. And boy, did she succeed! I just finished the trilogy and wow, did it ever build on itself. What a journey!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dr Swoony
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a great slow burn between Kat and Nick. I really enjoyed getting to know these characters and their banter and chemistry is great. I'm looking forward to more from them in the next part

3.0 out of 5 stars Deprivation
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI enjoyed the characters and was rooting for the main characters and the happily ever after. Enjoyed the storyline.I didn’t realize it was a trilogy. I found it a somewhat difficult read at times between the dreams and flashbacks. A little too much of that….
