You guys, when I started reading this series I had no idea what a roller coaster of emotions it would be. From the very first book, I’ve been mesmerized by this characters, and you know why? Because they are written in such a believable way, such a “human” way, which makes it so easy for us, readers, to actually empathize with their situation.
I love good character development, and R.L. wrote it beautifully. I adored Lana in the first book, but back then she couldn’t see anything or anyone outside of her family and her own desires. She was learning, but she was still just a girl, dealing with all of these things that were thrown her way. Her world was turned upside down and her main goal was to protect those close to her and to learn more.
This Lana, this beautiful warrior R.L. gifted us with in the second book; this Lana is a girl that takes responsibility for her actions, past and present. This Lana is a girl that keeps growing throughout the story. I would not change a single thing from that first introduction of her character to now.
Lana teaches us that it is okay to screw up sometimes. But when that happens, do not hide. Fix it, fight for it.
While she might not be the Queen they wanted, she is definitely a Queen they needed.
And boys... My beautiful, strong boys. Lana isn’t the only one going through development in this story. Luke, Leo, Hale and Zedd, each and every one of them are bringing something new to their relationship. And it isn’t the protection Lana needs. No, and they know that. They slowly come to terms that she needs their support, their courage, their unity. And bit by bit, we see all of that happening.
Ash, Ash, Ash... I absolutely love him. His connection to Lana. The torment he’s been through and is still going through. The strength he shows, I enjoyed every single part.
I can’t wait to read the next book and to reunite with these characters. If you didn’t read Desolation, start now, because Detonation will knock you off your feet.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2020I have to start off by saying OH MY GOD. Again, I need another second to process this Darkness Rising book, too! That seems to be the running trend for this series because OMG MY HEART.
Detonation is the second book in the Darkness Rising series, and when I say I am OBSESSED with Lana and her story, I mean it. I fell head over heels down the rabbit hole for this series in Desolation. Lana, Zedd, Hale, Leo, Luke and my baby Ash. Oh Ash. If you have read Desolation...you know where we left off and what happened, and why I have been SALIVATING to get my hands on this next book. It was everything I wanted, and so much more!
This book picked up right where we left off in Desolation, and we learn SO MUCH about what has happened in Lana's past life, as well as what exactly has been happening to her and the guys - including what the HECK happened to Ash and his soul sucking stow-away. (Don't get me started because I will cry and yell about him, too.) There were so many moments I found myself on the edge of my seat wanting to shout, or curled up crying for these characters. And then there would be a line in typical Lana fashion that would make me snort laughing and probably look like a loon to my family! And you better believe I loved every second of it.
My favorite part of Detonation is seeing the growth that Lana has shown. In Desolation, Lana still had been given a carefree, beautiful life with Beth and the boys after a horrific childhood, but the love and devotion she has always had for her best friends and family has been undeniable from the first pages of the series. Because they ALL had been through unspeakable horrors as children, it was natural that they'd be fierce protectors of one another in any way they could control, and while Desolation showed us the that the guys have sheltered and protected her as much as they could in their time together, Detonation is where Lana flourished under pressure and grew by leaps and bounds as a young woman and future Queen. Her growth arc in this story is a sight to see and makes you ache for her, and for the choices she has to make.
I'm trying so hard not to give any spoilers, because you have to experience this one for yourself, trust me, so all I'll say is that this book was everything I wanted and more, left me feeling things I never expected, and I am DYING to read the finale!! I could write an essay on how much I loved this book and these characters, and I really really need to know what happens next! Brava on an amazing second installment!! More, please?!?
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2021Lana, newly transitioned fae, and her mates Hale, Zedd, Ash, Luke, and Leo, are dealt a harsh blow at the end of Desolation, book one of this series. As the story progresses even more secrets are revealed, struggles still break out, and the truth will not be able to save them all. R.L. Caulder’s Detonation took a turn to the darker side from Desolation. I knew that there would be further troubles ahead for Lana, but what Caulder did in this one really brought the author hate on. I hope the author seeks redemption in the next book, but with a title like Devastation I can't be sure. Reader discretion advised due to dark subject matter and/or possible triggers.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2020The 'oh burn' moment Anshar receives from Lana starts off the book amazingly! Of course Anshar doesn't take the rejection well... and of course our poor Ash! Having Anshar inhabit his body and not being able to protect his mate from himself! It takes a queen to go save her mate while protecting her other mates. Caulder has written a masterpiece of a paranormal RH romance! We get POV of each male getting insight into their thoughts and feelings. The twins are my favorite btw! Ash's POV breaks my heart with his feelings of not belonging and blaming himself for not asking for help when he felt the darkness. The crunch against time to save Ash's soul had me reader faster, worried that Anshar will banish him from their shared body. Im preparing you for the anxiety you'll get gripping your device and cursing Caulder for putting our Ash through this. An edge of your seat battle to get her mate back and coming into her powers. An epic ending that leaves you needing the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Read!
Wow! Detonation was a phenomenal follow up to this amazing series!
The story picks up right where the previous book ended with Lana in the fae realm determined to save Ash and the rest of her mates have just found out she left without them and they are left to train hard and be ready for when they return to Lana’s side. It also gave us a little more background about Anshar and why he turned to black magic all those years ago.
Lana has grown a lot since we first met her in book one. She has suffered trauma in her life but instead of it overwhelming her she rises above it and becomes a strong and resilient woman. She is also funny and full of sass all of which makes her a likeable character.
Though there are some dark themes in the book the story was amazing and with the little twist at the end, book 3 can’t come quick enough for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chapter 19 😭
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.7
That’s right.. I’ve gone totally rogue and have done a .7. Read chapter 19 guys. You’ll understand, and if you don’t then where is your heart?! WHERE IS YOUR HEART?! If you have read chapter 19 and want to join the support group, come find me.
Anywaaaaaay.. onto the review. Lana, Lana, Lana. Where in book 1 I wasn’t her biggest fan, this book turned it around for me. The growth she undertakes through this book is immense, gone is the self absorbed girl from book 1 and by the end of the book we have a woman ready to lead. And honestly, I loved that. It was a progressive growth throughout the book.
“You’re doing this for love. Love isn’t always this bright ball of light. Sometimes, it’s dark, twisted and ugly.”
What I also love about this book is the multiple POV’s, so not only are we following Lana on her journey, but we’re also with all the guys too. They are each coming into their own throughout this book and sometimes that ends up being in ways they thought best suited one of the other guys. They are coming out of their “pigeon holes” and learning to harness their powers to be the best Mates they can be, not only for Lana but also for each other.
After that ending, I am even more excited for book 3. Some questions were answered but more were raised.. which I can’t go into without spoilers, but I just want to say I definitely recommend this book (minus chapter 19 because I am just not ok). I’m glad I gave Lana another chance and I implore you all to do the same.
