Devil Next Door: Obsession (Criminal Delights Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.7 out of 5 stars 551 ratings

All Remy Harker wants is a fresh start.

Well, maybe that’s what he tells himself as he rolls up to his nice new house, in the nice little neighborhood, in a town where nobody knows his name.
He’s surrounded by friendly neighbors and a white picket fence. The ugly pink carpet might drive him to insanity, and he can’t stop wondering where the old lady who lived there before him died—but it’s nice.
And if he puts his mind to it, he can be anything—or anyone—he wants to be. He can be nice too.
At least, he thinks he can until he lays eyes on his next-door neighbor.

Luke Boucher is nice.
And quiet.
And perfect.

It doesn’t take long for Remy to insinuate himself into Luke’s life. A camera here, a break-in there.
– It’s not really stalking if you love someone, is it? –

But when Remy’s plan to make a good impression goes to hell, he ends up over his head in more ways than one. Then things aren’t quite so nice anymore.
– It’s not really murder if you love someone, is it? –

Loving your neighbor isn’t so easy when you’re the devil next door.

*****

This book is part of CRIMINAL DELIGHTS. Each novel can be read as a standalone and contains a dark M/M romance.

Warning: These books are for adult readers who enjoy stories where lines between right and wrong get blurry. High heat, twisted and tantalizing, these are not for the fainthearted.

After spending years creating stories in her head, Alex started writing them down and then found she couldn’t stop. Despite the late start, she now writes m/m romance about found families, sometimes with an historical feel—and the occasional werewolf.

Free from aspirations of literary greatness, Alex simply hopes to spin a good yarn of love and life, wrapped up with a happy ending. And if her characters have to go through Hell to get there, she’s a-okay with that.

Alex writes and walks on the South Coast of England—even when her heart and spellcheck are in New York.

You can now find her dark m/m romance under Alexis Jane, if you like love…but darker.

While this one started off a bit slow and maybe a wee bit confusing, it really started to draw me in after it started to pick up. I loved the characters and honestly this has to be one of the best twists and spin on a story that I’ve read in a while. I wasn’t expecting any of the stuff that happened to happen and it was very well thought out.

I liked it but it was a little confusing at times, like who was who and who was doing what. I mainly got this book because the description made it sound like a stalker found som random guy to love. And I was waiting to see the lines “it’s not really stalking if you love someone, is it?” And “it’s not really murder if you love someone, is it?” But they never came in that order or that way. It was a situation where Remy lost his temper and decided he’d kill Luke. That was it.

The description made it sound Remy just so happens to notice his neighbor Luke and becomes obsessed with him, if you read the story you’ll quickly find out that isn’t the case at all. Which is anticlimactic, I wanted to read about a stalker and his one-sided love for a neighbor who didn’t know he existed.

The description makes it sound like Remy ruined his first impression, but that never happened, Luke invited him into his house to watch the game. There was no ruined impressions, the description is very misleading.

It also made it sound like Remy was the “devil next-door” but when you read the story, you’ll find out who fits that title more

Overall I liked the story for the most part, I just don’t like the misleading description, I was prepared to read an entirely different story from what this one actually was

Really liked this book and was surprised at the sudden twist so early on in the book, even though it was short and fast paced, I loved it!

I Give this book a 3.5/5 but listing it as a 3 Star Rating

    Dark: 3.5/5
Romance: 3/5 (it’s not upfront per se, but this is a deeply committed partnership that I believe romance bloomed from it)
    Drama: 3/5
    Suspense: 3/5
    Smexy: 3/5

I have been anticipating this series for months this book gave me whiplash. I couldn’t figure out sometimes who was who and who was the bad guy.. who was the good guy and I think that’s the way that this book was supposed to be written but in my honest opinion it could’ve been written better there was no real climax it just kind of switched like a snap of the fingers to a totally different story there was no real transition from the beginning to the end and the epilogue was just not detailed enough so when I started reading it Got super confusing for a good minute it was a good book and it grabbed my attention it’s just about halfway through the book I got super confused and there is no real climax I was kind of disappointed. This is is a twisted story about two neighbors who each are hiding something one more twisted then the other. Remy has a hidden past that slowly comes to the light as you read on and that was trippy to see how it played out. If you don't like stalkers, murders, and toeing the line of your moral compass then don't read this, all others enjoy!

This book blew my mind. I love it. I love the anticipation and the initial shock. This book has a great shock factor and also a psychological twist that is more than the equivalent of a thorough mind screw. All I have left to say is "WOW".

An entire story from the "bad" side of humanity. No excuses, no fluffy romantic, no redeeming qualities...written perfectly to intrigue, chill to the spine, intrigue, even sicken.
Not for everyone. Not for most, in truth. But appreciable exposure to some of the darkest sentiments of humanity.

    The Alphas' Homestead it ain't!
Alex Jane is a go to author of mine and so have read most of her works. This one is completely different and unexpected and I'm not altogether sure how I feel about it.
Take heed of the warning because the blurb doesn't quite put across what to expect.
I enjoyed the writing style, no surprise there I guess with being a fan, and I liked the beginning as you get to know a little of Remys' thoughts and feelings. His actions seemed a tad stalker obsessive after meeting Luke but not too bad considering the nature of the book. Of course it all changes when the twists and turns start kicking in and you begin to realise what is really going on.
    Spoilers ahead...…...
I have read about characters whose psychopathic actions have been more depraved (both m/m and m/f) but their partner has often rebelled against the situation once they knew about it. I think maybe it was how accepting and involved Remy became because of his love for Luke and how far he was willing to go to keep him happy (although I'm not sure that's quite true either as I have read worse but enjoyed them). The rest of the time, despite their variety of different personas, they appeared to be quite 'normal'.
I guess I couldn't relate to the characters and the things they did (not always necessary I know), so felt quite detached from them. I also wasn't keen on them (which I also prefer). As a result I kind of liked this read but kind of didn't so this one is a tricky one to review. Enjoyable, but not. I guess it needs to be read to understand what I mean so this has probably been no help whatsoever. Sorry.
I will continue to look at the other books in this series although there are only three authors out of those listed I have read before. I have to admit to not finishing book one as I found it unbelievable (I love those authors so unusual for me). Will wait and see what other reviewers have to say first about the others I think and of course read the blurb before deciding.
