Devil's Mark (The Reckless Damned Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 3,199 ratings

Cal and his brothers turned their backs on the family business over a hundred years ago. Hell is tired of waiting for them to return.

Cal

I’ve never wanted a relationship—especially not with a human. With my father demanding my return to Hell and a demon leaving dead bodies in my bookshop, now is not the time to lose my heart. But one look in Oscar’s broken eyes, and I know I’m in trouble. Oscar’s been hurt before, and everything in me screams to keep him safe. How can I do that when I know being with me will only put him in more danger?

More importantly, am I strong enough to walk away from him?

Oscar

After escaping my last relationship with broken bones and an anxiety disorder, I’m tired of living half a life. My world revolves around my classroom, flat, and best friend. When fate throws Cal in my path, he seems too good to be true. He looks like he’s been pulled from my fantasies, and my baggage doesn’t scare him. Ok, so there’s the tiny issue of him being a demon, but I’ve dealt with far scarier.

I’ve been broken once before, and I don’t think I’d survive it again. Can I let down my barriers enough to let Cal in?

Devil’s Mark is a thrilling high heat, hurt/comfort, M/M contemporary paranormal romance with a HEA and no cliff-hanger. It features a possessive demon and the broken teacher who captures his heart. ‘Devil’s Mark’ is the first in The Reckless Damned series but can be read as a standalone. Each book focuses on a different couple and will have a HEA.

I loved this entire series. But I'll leave a series review in it's entirety somewhere else. For this book alone, I love Oscar to bits and pieces. Oscar is such an amazingly strong character and I really love how the author continues to build his character up even after his book and in the other books as the series progresses. I feel as though Oscar and Cal are like the parents over everyone else. Cal is the backbone, the silent, but strong and always there. And then Oscar comes along and becomes a mother hen, trying to include and take care of everyone. They make such a perfect couple.

I like how Cal learned everything by default and in hindsight. Oscar was a completely unexpected surprise and that opened up entire concepts and theories that Cal was completely unaware of. But he was strong, steady, and resilient for Oscar from the very beginning. Of course there are red flags, but they are also demons for crying out loud. And I can't deny that I loved the first night Cal followed Oscar home. Was it completely stalkerish and breaking and entering? Yes. Was it completely endearing and heartfelt despite that? Also yes. Do I care what that says about me? Absolutely not, as long as that means the author will keep writing like this!!!

This book deals with past domestic abuse and instead of just writing that it happened the author gives real fallouts from being a surviver from a relationship like that. Oscar had to take a position he didn't like to survive off of his income, he had to move and it still too traumatized to fully unpack or move in and get comfortable. The depression and emotional aspects that run through his head and tear him down from the inside out and the panic attacks. All of these things are addressed with the character and the other lead slowly works to help him heal from all of that damage.  but what I loved, loved, loved, is that it's not only Cal who learns how to deal with panic attacks, each of his brother's and their mates throughout the series takes time to learn how to navigate panic attacks so they can help him if he has one. This is one of the simple gestures that solidifies how much these characters are family, not only between the brother's but between the mates as well, and one of the biggest reasons why I fell so hard for this entire series.

The found family dynamic in this is also wonderful. While the brother's have Cal's back, they also inexplicably have Oscar's. They fall in love with the little human and immediately make him a part of their family. And I love Cal's sweetness and his utter lack of shame in it. Finding ways to bring all the things Oscar used to love back into his life and encouraging him to re-embrace the hobbies he had set aside due to past abuse. It's like Cal came in to undo the damage that the one before him did, and Oscar absolutely blossoms under the attention and I loved watching him develop under Cal's attention.

This was such a beautiful beginning to the series and I love how the first couple becomes such resilient forces for the other characters that are introduced throughout the series.

    Genre: paranormal romance, MM
Tropes / tags: past abuse, fated mates, hurt / comfort

Devil's Mark was a great debut romance with demon x human pairing, hurt / comfort and a bit of insta-love!

Cal was so protective and possessive of Oscar but in the best of ways, even if he did a little bit of stalking to make sure that his fated mate was kept safe. He was great with Oscar and took care of him, helping him to deal with his mental health and panic attacks. The hurt / comfort was sweet to read and even if there were some heavier topics here, Lark Taylor did a great job with balancing them nicely with a sweet and more lighthearted tone.

The sibling banter was fun, these demon boys were chaotic and I loved it! It was fun to see demons being more than a millennia old acting like frat boys, and there were quite some antics going on here. They were fiercely loyal and protective though, helping Cal looking out for Oscar and protecting him when necessary.

I really enjoyed Cal and Oscar's story, and there were a lot of things I loved here: the sweet moments between Cal and Oscar, the friendship between Oscar and Bailey, the mental health rep, hot shower shenanigans and the book references. I love that Oscar found a way back to his love for books and reading, and it felt a little bit like faith that Cal also owned a bookstore that was basically straight out of Oscar's fantasy.

Devil's Mark was a sweet story with a bit of suspense to it, and parts of it kind of reminded me of the TV-show Lucifer. I liked the set up with the demons and the other paranormal themes here, and as someone who's very picky with their PNR reads, I'm very glad that I picked this one up!

This was an excellent read. The complex characters and steamy romance was very well written. I about died of happiness at the Onley James reference which just solidified my new love for this author. Well worth the read!

Sweet, protective demons are apparently a new weakness of mine. Clearly I love a possessive MC that takes one look at a man and claims MINE. Cal was everything. A higher demon that rejected the rule of his father along with his brothers, he spots Oscar in the bar and is hit with a sudden change in his world. Instalove/lust at its finest. Cal ends up following him home and marking Oscar as his because seeing Oscar cry and break down had his dark demon heart breaking. *swoon*

Oscar has been through some stuff. At first he’s more reserved and unsure, fearful of allowing himself to trust again. But omg when he starts to find his confidence and strength again?! This man is feisty! Apparently I also have a thing for MCs that turn into clingy koalas that must be attached to their man. 🥰

The story line was interesting and drove the plot forward, but the true strength in this book is the bond that grows between Cal and Oscar. It is hot and lusty, whew 😅, but it is also true devotion and support and emotion. A fabulous debut that has made me an instafan!

    {Now can I just say that I’m delighted the next book will be Harlow’s?! Because that demon twink was so sassy and fierce. He had me laughing several times claiming bestie rights on Oscar and bantering with his brothers. His story is going to be beyond fun, I just know it.}

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It was fun, spicy, dark, and a bit violent. The plot felt a little bland but their relationship is sweet and it's a good insta-love story.

I'm looking forward to the next book and reading the brothers' stories. Definitely recommend the book for 18+.

BUT I do suggest that you reconsider the idea of listening to the audiobook. That's how I started it and the voices were just... not right for this book or its characters.

I really loved loved this book. I've been in a bit of a slump, this is the first book I've read all the way through in a couple of weeks. The storyline was great, the world building was good, I loved how we got to see Oliver come into himself and overcome his trauma. Loved the spicy scenes, although I wish there were a bit more lol really great book!
